Today, while glaring at my bare and drafty living room windows, I started to regret my decision to forgo curtains and put only shades on them. For years, I've loved it — they're bay windows that let in tons of light and actually look nice without anything. Lately, however, I've seen a lot of gorgeous, dramatic window treatments that are high impact without being fussy or precious.
Decadent solid fabrics seem to abound, as do quirkier choices like metallic geometrics — perhaps a runoff from the wallpaper craze? Rather than detract from the other elements of the room, these window treatments often highlight architectural features or tie the entire room together.

You know you can put curtains over shades. We have wooden blinds but also curtains on top of that. Gives you tons of options about how much light to let in. I've always thought just curtains with no blinds or shade was sorta bizarre, but that's just based on what I've always been used to.
Interesting how in all these cases, the drapes don't pickup the colors in other pieces -- rather, a very few other pieces pick up the color of the drapes. I may have to re-think a room or two!
i can't think of a curtain or blind related comment because my mind is only saying, "what?! why is that couch covering the fireplace in the first picture???!!!"
After living with blinds on my windows for years, I was shocked at how much I liked drapery panels, and how much softer my home felt.
Does anyone know where I could find the curtains, or the material for them in the 3rd picture? I am in love.
We just hung cream linen curtains in the dining room. I love how they softened the entire room. And really pop against our gray walls! Pictures are here: http://settlingwest.com
Love these all. Wish I had those green ones hung in my place right now.
"You know you can put curtains over shades."
Ditto.
In fact, the Formal European style is to Triple-drape windows: A layer of sheers that can be opened and closed, a layer of heavy draperies that can be opened and closed over the sheers, then a pair of decorative panels that are pulled back and intended to remain stationary.
Anyone know where the beautiful pink rug in the 4th picture is from?
