This post couldn't have come at a better time. I was literally just searching for C tables!
I have the tables from World Market and they're fantastic. Very sturdy and easy to put together. Like with most C tables, I don't put too much weight on the non-supported end, but it's nice for light use.
these tables are a must for anyone living small...they virtually eliminate the need for a bulky, space wasting coffee table. i own two very sturdy models that have even doubled as
extra seating & a step stool when turned on their side.
Question, since these look like items you would slide in and out and around often, is there anything on the bottom that makes it glide along the floor or at least keep from scratching it?
I am the least handy person I know, but the West Elm tempts me to make one from pipes and a piece of reclaimed wood. We've been eating in front of the TV a whole lot lately.
Mine stay put, but most of these will have little rubber or felt feet to make sure they don't scratch floors. In my experience, they don't glide very well and they're best used when you pick them up and move them, rather than slide them on the floor. You're just asking to tip them over (they can tip forward easily because there isn't support).
I like how the Ikea C table has a bit of storage built into the top. Very handy for pens! (which I somehow always need....)
I bought my C-tables at CB2 and love them! They were very similar to ones at Room & Board but cheaper (around $90). Not sure if they still have them. We eat in front of the TV all the time (I know, bad!) and use them in place of TV trays which I hated. Sometimes it gets a little crowded because they're smallish, but they're perfect for our needs.
@thorndale We added felt strips that stick onto the bottom so they don't scratch the hardwood.
Actually, the CB2 versions we got are exactly the ones shown above from Crate & Barrel, which makes sense since they're the same company. We bought them several years ago so they were much cheaper!
Ana White has a DIY plan for one of these on casters. Several people hacked her design to add storage and she has the pictures on her site. Her basic design has extra support that makes the unit sturdier.
I have an expanding tray table from Improvements that I use for my laptop. They also offer one with a slide-out tray. Both are now on sale for $49.99.

In addition to the Crate & Barrel C table shown here, CB2 offers three other C tables, one of which is Plexiglas and it's on wheels. The birch bentwood one is currently on sale for $99.
We have the Foundry C tables, and have for a few years. I still love the look and style of them, but I wish I had paid a bit more for the ones I really wanted. The metal powdercoat is already starting to wear off in places, unfortunately, and the lower quality is showing.
World Market has some nice ones. They're on sale now from $40-$60. http://www.worldmarket.com/search.do?query=laptop+table
