4 High Tech Desktop Toys

My workspace has gotten really serious lately. To-do's keep popping up like heads on a hydra and it's almost becoming a place I don't want to be in. So to bring a little levity back to the ol' office I've decided to enlist the help of some stylish decor. One of those being toys, and not the plastic-y Cracker Jack kind either. 1. Ferrite ($100+) We never thought we'd see lava lamps in use except in John Hughes-era films, but the Ferrite comes pretty close to the modern version. Using magnetic liquid called ferrofluid and a couple included neodymium magnets the Ferro and Ferrite (the two sizes of this futuristic looking toy) instigate plenty of play. We'll call it creative release, you can call it whatever you like. And despite its somewhat evil looking form, the liquid not harmful if the Ferrite gets broken, just don't eat it or bathe in the stuff, you won't become Venom.

2. Buckyballs ($24.95-37.95)
Be warned, these guys will destroy your productivity. Sure, they're just little magnetic balls you think. How fun can that be? We find these are a lot like the internet, one second you're just taking a quick break and an hour and half later you're way down the rabbit hole coming back to reality like the morning after a heavy night of drinking. Buckyballs come in silver, gold, black and various colors, though we haven't graduated to mixing colors just yet.

3. Plane/USB Hub ($12)
Not only is it a pretty sleek looking little toy, it also doubles as a USB hub for up to four extra ports. On the toy plane side it's got a spinning propeller and working ventilator. Sound effects not included, but we're sure you can make that propeller noise with your mouth.

4. Tengu USB Powered Character ($25)
While it's billed as a cure for loneliness, we just find this little guy funny. A sleek white surface when not in use lights up and lipsyncs to whenever it hears noise. Like to sing when you're alone in your office? Tengu makes a great tiny audience that won't heckle. Well, as far as we know, we haven't heard you sing yet.
