I often get asked what my design style is . I reply — historical modern — followed by an explanation of the style. I explain that I love the clean lines and innovative styling of modern furniture, but I also enjoy the nod to history and craftsmanship of classic furniture.
A modern home is often referred to as being stark and cold. I agree that a minimalist home designed completely with modern pieces can feel more like a gallery than a comfortable living space. Creating a balance between modern furnishings and vintage or antique pieces is one solution for creating a warm environment.
A few of my favorite examples of this style mix include a modern dining room table or desk paired with a worn vintage chair. I also love the reinterpretation of a classic furniture design upholstered in a bright fabric. Recently, I have seen a trend toward modernizing the Windsor chair by offering it in many different colors.
Do you find yourself mixing different design styles or do you stick to just one style?
