We found the first photo while wading in the Apartment Therapy LA Group Pool. It was the long starburst pillow that caught our eye. Made from Ikea fabric turned inside out, it made us want to whip out our sewing machine and run one up immediately...or get the tailor at our local dry cleaner to do it for us. After tearing our eyes away from that pillow, we took a look at the rest of the room.
Simple, calm, peaceful and inviting. We wondered what the rest of Hnxing's home looked like. We weren't disappointed. Not at all. And she had a trick that made her home rock!
A calm palette of the greyed out whites, beiges and browns of Aracuna chicken eggs is punctuated by just one stand out item in each room. Whether it's bright spots of yellow from flowers, pillows, a pot, a chair, that pillow in the bedroom, a pillow in the living room, it's a simple, easy and inexpensive idea with a lot of impact.
Try this in your own home — what can you swap out for something bright or unique? Some ideas: bring in a vase of brightly colored flowers (try Gerber daisies, Irises, Daisies, Daffodils), swap out one pillow for a handmade pillow made from a souvenir t-shirt or an old scarf, paint one chair. The impact is in choosing that one item, letting bright clear color shout in a neutral space, subduing the "if one is good then more is better" impulse and letting everything stay a bit off balance; meaning paint one chair, swap out one of your couch pillows, tuck in a single bright towel in the bathroom, a colorful kettle in the kitchen, a great painting in the bedroom.
