Architect: Derk Garlick of Derk Garlick Architects
Location: Hoboken, New Jersey
This sleek and contemporary family home was designed by Derk Garlick — the natural light is abundant and the apartment offers views of lower Manhattan across the Hudson River:
Tasked to create a family friendly atmosphere with modern highlights for a family of four in Hoboken, New Jersey. The apartment features a āVā shaped circulation plan that funnels natural light into the heart of the space. Glass transoms and oversized sliding glass doors provide additional assistance in transferring light from room to room. At the heart of the space is the open kitchen with a vibrant red countertop to energize the space and to play off the stark white lacquer cabinets. Strategically located around the apartment are built-in audiovisual cabinets, cabinets for game centers, concealed hingeless doors, and custom storage spaces for daily items such as a vacuum, cleaning supplies and toys.
Thanks Derk!

White Enamel Flatwa...
Sterile with an awesome view.
It'a vibrant orange on my screen too.
The countertop is my less favorite element.
All white would have worked for me.
Choosing a counter top color to match cookware is not something I would have thought of. But now that we're on the subject, aren't stainless steel appliances, silver backsplash, and stainless steel counters an attempt to do the same thing?
Hollywood - Orange for me, too.
I love the lighting in the kitchen and dining room, as well as the translucent windows between rooms. Other than that, I'm not a fan. (Then again I rarely like white, so take that for what it's worth.)
The countertop is orange here - and considering so many people see it this way it's probably orange. Whomever sold this and told the person it was red and got them to buy it deserves a raise.
Red-Orange me think. :-)
Sterile made worse with bad lighting.
saw it on the house tour. it's orange.
I don't know what y'all are talking about. I love that reddish orange island! Love it! But then again, I love, love color! Yum.
eye-catching counter. sadly, it will look silly in a few years.
Photos often do not faithfully capture actual colors. Someone who has seen it in person is bound to be more correct than a hoard of commentors who've only seen a photo of the object. A photo of the object is not the object itself: "Ceci n'est pas une pipe."
But I like to imagine it is actually orange in real life, since I'm not that fond of red. :p
Also, it's only 3 sidesit looks like they could easily replace the red with butcher block or something else if they feel like it.
The red/orange counter looks like is landed in the middle of the kitchen from outer space. It looks so out of place to me. I don't see any other colors in the kitchen to compliment the counter in any way. Maybe I have to be there to get it but from the photos it looks too outlandish. Other then that, I must say the place looks very sterile, and dare I say, boring.
Butcher block? What's next, gee it needs some Pennsylvania Dutch to make it liveable?
It fits the space. Who cares if it's dated in a few years. Many of the ultra chic pieces here were once dated and uncool.
Everyone brays about lack of color, then someone does a bold statement and... well.
@minimalist1
Hey, I like the color, or what I imagine the color is. I'm just putting it out there they've hardly committed to something that would be inordinately difficult for them to change to something else if they wind up not liking it anytime soon... or not-soon, either way.
LOVE the orange island! Wondering what material that is?
