Holiday Trendspotting: Living Ornaments

This holiday season we're seeing quite a few different takes on a lovely ornament trend: live or dried plants displayed within simple glass balls. Some are, indeed, terrariums, with little ecosystems ensconced inside the glass, while others are just pretty dried stems floating on their own. What a great, easy DIY project for your Christmas tree!

If you've got a few hours this weekend, pick up some plain glass balls at a craft store, assemble some bits and pieces from your garden, and you're ready to go. Most glass ball ornaments have a simple hook closure that's easy to pop off and on. Just be careful of your fingertips, as the raw edge of the opening might be sharp.

If you're not in a DIY mood, here are a few handmade botanical ornaments to choose from (pictured, left to right):

Single Spruce Ornament from onegiftoneworld, $9 on Etsy.

Sleeping Little Oak Tree Ornament from onegiftoneworld, $26 on Etsy.

Yarrow Bulb/Tallow Bulb from Land Rich, $10 for a small ornament, $14 for large.

• A little DIY terrarium ornament inspiration from Amy Merrick on Design*Sponge.
