Where Beauty is Therapy is about the conversion of a former mental institution into a condo and retail development. The entire complex that once was the Traverse City State Hospital is an astonishing 1 million square feet - 10% of it has been redeveloped.
The photo above is of an attic condo owned by Luigi and Carlotta Maresca. The surgeons had this to say about living in a place whose new use is so different from its former one: "A couple times I've had criticism: `How could you go there? There've been a lot of suffering souls in that place.' But I look at the beauty. I see this more like a beautiful, historic renovation project. And times change, and medicine evolves. You cannot look at things in history just with the eyes of today."
