Calling all black thumbs, wannabe urban farmers, and those short on gardening time, space, or expertise ... Home Grow Micro Farms might be just what you need. The Los Angeles-based family business delivers pre-planted, ultra-low-maintenance organic vegetable garden boxes – and will even swap them out at the end of every season.

Home Grow Micro Farms has been getting a ton of press recently, but we especially enjoyed a recent interview with owners Lucas Brower and Jesse Kam at Goodkin. According to Brower, the business was born from the couple's own attempts to live more sustainably:

Home Grow Micro Farms started with a rooftop garden in Laguna Beach. What was intended to feed about 4 people was so productive that it fed an entire extended family. Everyone who visited this garden wanted one, so it was a natural move to make these sub-irrigated gardens available to more people. That being said, we knew that not everyone had the time/energy/know-how/space to do it on their own, so we took a close look at the process, and then attempted to do as much of the work as possible, leaving our clients to enjoy the outcome.

With a built-in water reservoir, the planters take the guesswork out of watering and require very little maintenance. According to Brower, clients need only spend a "minute or two every day, or even every other day" tending to the garden. And if there are problems, Home Grow Micro Farms can provide support online, on the phone, or in person.

The service is also quite affordable. One box costs $25/month (4-month minimum), and there are discounts when you order more. A monthly planting menu offers multiple options so you can have tomatoes in summer and greens in winter. Delivery is limited to the Los Angeles area, but we imagine it's only a matter of time until there are similar services around the country.
