Home Hacks and tools just go hand in hand, there's no two ways about it. Over the years we've talked a great deal about where we keep our tools. For some it's in the garage, others it's a tool box tucked away, and in this case — a simple shoe box can do wonders!
Over in our Apartment Therapy Home Cure Flickr Pool (yes, we're still keeping an eye on everyone!) we ran across this simple tool solution from Flickr member ivystyle33. She found a sturdy designer shoe box outside a store in Athens and took it home and put it to use.
She covered the box, gave it a label and some cute-as-can-be handles and she's all set for storage. Even though this might not be enough space for those looking to take on larger DIY projects, a large shoe box is just the right size to hold many small handheld pieces.
Where do you keep your tools? A drawer in your kitchen? Up high in your closet? Let us know in the comments below!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I keep my tools in an old makeup train case that was my grandmother's. It sits out as a decorative box and my tools are always in reach.
If I put tools in a shoebox they would magically morph into a tangled mess the second time I opened the box. Even if there were only 3 tools.
I use an actual toolbox for my tools. I use a box designed for storing fishing supplies, which apparently are various, small, and many, so there are lots of spaces to separate screws, anchors, nails, hooks, etc. That way I usually have fasteners and small hardware on hand.
Both fit below my kitchen sink.
really? this is a post?
I keep my tools in an orange 3 drawer enamel filing cabinet in my guest room/office/tv room. It's quite pretty, (sale item from Pottery barn years ago); there is a lamp on top. I don't have to go to the apartment basement storage area every time I want to fix something , or hang a picture.
I don't understand how people can fit their tools into the narrow confines of a traditional tool box. Where do you put your drill, hammers, staple gun? don't you need at least one deep drawer? I'm not especially handy, but even I have too much to fit in a shoebox!
My tools are EVERYWHERE! I do some of my own car repair as well as woodworking, etc. I should really just break down and buy one of the big tool chests, but I don't know where I'd put it. I have wrenches, sockets, and a hand saw in a rubbermaid tub under the bed, power tools in a copy paper box in the closet, and a large plastic lunchpail-type toolbox with the hammer, studfinder, more wrenches, a trowel, etc. And one of those little drawer thingies for miscellaneous small bits. Oh, and another copy paper box with tape, spackle, touch-up paint, and bike tools in my husband's office cupboard.
Can we have some more tool-storage posts? I find it very challenging to keep them in my small apartments. And nmkc, it may not be the greatest design ever, but it's a sight better than what I have going on.
I started with a tool box.
Too many tools later, I bought a plastic 3-drawer filing-cabinet-looking thing on wheels, which tucked into a closet.
That's now in the "to be sold or given away" area in the basement.
Now, on a shelving unit in the basement, I have some Rubbermaid stackable containers to hold the heavy-duty tools: hammer, mallet, staple gun, levels, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.
And in a large plastic rectangular tote on another shelf, I have large resealable bags separated by use: picture-hanging hooks, wire and other little components in one; various hooks and extra cabinet knobs in another; boxes of nails, etc., in another; furniture sliders that I don't use at present in another; etc. It's great to have everything sorted like that.
And there's a shelf for painting-related stuff, too.
I try to filter through the stuff every once in a while, throwing out items I am 80% sure I will never need again, but in the world of home repair, I have learned that the one thing you toss will be the only thing you need for the next project.
That's what happens when you no longer rent and instead have 100% responsibility for upkeep!
The shoebox idea is cute, tho, for folks who don't need to do a lot of maintenance work.
CDK: Very cool idea with the train case!
Thank you Sarah for featuring my tool box!
It's true that I only keep a few of them in there, most of which in smaller boxes, so that they remain organised and easily accessible. As I am a DIY person, my actual tool box is rather big....since speaking with pictures is what I prefer, I 'll make some and post them at the group for those who would like to have a look!
ivy style33: where on earth did you get that lovely banner fabric?
Hello jsipe,
the banner fabric is from Ikea, a design availiable since a couple of years I guess. It's marked with 2006..
