Medical supply sources have long been a well-kept secret source for affordable shower curtain tracks. We spotted this tasteful example of the idea put into practice at a home designed by architect Risa Boyer Leritz.
The custom-made curved track and curtain rang in at less than $200 from the Los Angeles-based Salsbury Industries, which ships throughout the US. The simple, utilitarian, industrial feeling of the ball chain track is right at home in the renovated mid-century bathroom where it contrasts the warmth of the wood-paneled ceiling — but would work equally well in a modern space. This is the system I have in my apartment - Was @ $300 to do two rooms worth of windows, wall to wall - There are Kirsch drapery hardware dealer dealers all over the country who can source this for you, so you won't have to deal with shipping costs.

I like this idea! Also: is that a tv above the tile?
I work in hospitals, so I think this would kinda creep me out at home! I'd always think the curtains were crawling with germs. But it's a neat idea for people who don't have that association with it. =)
Thanks jeannemarie for making paranoid to go to the hospital now.
Ocelco inc. helped me out with my tiled japanese soaker bathtub-to shower surround. They sell lengths and corners and you can build your own track.

"...is that a tv above the tile?"
No, that's the exhaust fan.
I did the same in my bathroom makeover - 6 months into the reno - the curtains are working beautifully!

i thought it was a speaker at first. i guess it could be a fan too though...
maybe i've just always wanted a speaker system in the bathroom walls, so that's what my mind jumped to... everyone is a rock star in the shower! :)
@jeanmarie - for between actual scrubbings, check out Method's Daily Shower Spray. It works very well on my shower curtain.
Ikea sells these and are customizable: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=kvartal
I've not used them myself, but am pondering them for my bathroom.
I stayed at a hotel in Portland that used a similar system to the above and really liked it.
I've been considering doing this in our loft so that we can have some streamline "dividers" for when we need them, but still look chic. Thanks for sharing!
Curtains are good if you don't like/can't afford shower doors. They have these great concertina-folding glass shower doors in Italy. They fold flush to the wall so you never feel closed in when you take a bath. I looked for them here in the US but no luck.
@Jose A, I have the Ikea curtain track, and I can't say that I'm too impressed with them. The curtains don't move very smoothly along the track, especially if you have two tracks joined together, and it doesn't feel very solid. The one point that it has going for it is that it's cheap. Now that I know about these hospital curtain tracks, I may have to re-do my bedroom windows. And I'm assuming that if they're designed for hospital use, they're more durable than the Ikea track.
I absolutely HATE this idea. I work in a hospital and it makes me want to throw up just thinking about having something like this in my home.
super cool!!!!!
In a small bathroom it makes it the room look bigger because you dont have the rod going across.
Did it in my bathroom and it looks great!
My shower did not have a bar and I had a window which got in the way of putting one across. I suspended a regular curtain rod from the ceiling. http://bouncewden.shutterfly.com/
I custom ordered an oval track to go above a clawfoot tub. It was a low ceiling already and I thought one of those traditional pipe systems would feel really claustrophobic. It has been installed 10 years now and still works great. The roller parts have to be replaced occasionally because they rust, but the track is still working great. I liked it so well that I installed another one in the bay window in my shower. I have the ikea track in my bedroom and there is no comparison. I will probably replace the ikea track with the roller track as soon as I finalize the layout of the room.
can you use a shower curtain liner with this setup? It seems to me that it should not be a problem but wanted to check.
