Do you think the person who invented the term blister pack did so because the packaging is just so darn dangerous? We know we've sliced up our hands pretty badly whenever we've tried to rip open a plastic sealed case to get to a new toy; not to mention, broken a few pairs of scissors...
Amazon.com has already tried to change the blister pack tide, by teaming up with companies to sell items sans blisters, but for those items that still insist on being sandwiched by two pieces of hard as nails plastic, we give you ZipIt. The $25 battery-operated device tears through fused plastic cases without a care in the world.

At $25? I don't think so. I try not to buy stuff in crazy packaging, but when I can't avoid blister packs, I use heavy duty scissors or a utility knife to open them.
I hate those packages soooo much. I rarely open them without wishing I could punch the inventor in the face.
and the companies that use blister packaging happily are brick and mortar stores where otherwise many items would be easily stolen... Yes the packaging does suck, but it makes it so shoplifting isn't so easy.
Amazon's new packaging is fantastic. I bought a gorilla pod for my camera, and it came in just a simple brown little box. Plus, since it was opened easily i actually use it to store the odd shaped item.
All online stores could go to this and the world would be a better place. however I don't see real, physical stores doing it anytime.
None the less, for $25, no, this is ridiculous. All you need is a sharp utility knife that costs less then $1. I am accident prone and i have yet to cut my hands doing it that way. Just follow your simple knife safety rules. Cut AWAY from yourself. Don't be stupid. Done and done.
OH and seriously does it need to be battery operated? Couldn't it just have a hand crank or some sort. Kind of like a can opener which it pretty much resembled and works in the same way?
If it wasn't battery operated the price would be probably cut in half. It would be easier to use since a spinning sharp blade is asking for trouble. PLUS you wouldn't be using batteries and throwing them out...
Yet another electrical gadget to charge? A good pair of kitchen shears with serrated blades (to prevent slipping) is all you need.
If you need a special tool to open packages, then you need to stop buying so much crap.
This looks like a glorified can opener. I wonder, could you use a can opener to open these packages? They cut through aluminum pretty well...
Well, I just take the package to the garage and start up the circular saw. That does the trick 100% of the time.
I have a pair of old but serviceable tin snips that are hand me downs from my grandmothers toolbox. They cut through blister packs like a hot knife through butter. I order so many things online these days i made a place for them near my landing strip where I open all the boxes.
Even though I have actually cut myself opening the exact package opened by the gizmo, I can't see myself buying it for $25 when I can have five pair of scissors for the same price. Or do what I do now, and not buy crap in those packages. That works even better.
it's pretty easy to open blister packs with a simple flat razor, xacto, or utility blade... the secret is not to try and cut through the tough heat sealed seam, but instead to cut just inside of it (on the flat surface). so for a typical rectangular package you'd just cut along the inside edge all the way around (4 straight cuts) and then lift the entire side off.
