It's not a trick — Richard Hutten's Playing With Tradition carpet design is based off the way images failed to load with a dial-up modem. It's a witty mix of modern and traditional style. Missing the good old days? We didn't think so — but how do you like this rug?

Shaw's Original Fir...
seriously horrendous.
I kind of like it.
In a artist loft .. fine.
Don't even attempt to put it anywhere else.
Cute for about ten seconds.
I love the idea, but I wouldn't buy it or seriously want to live with it.
hideous!
It's interesting as art, but I'm not sure I'd want it on my floor.
Great idea. Nice to see something different and creative in the rug world.
Only funny if your floor scrolls.
This time I have to say, maybe I'm the only one, but I really love this and I love the idea too!
Somewhere between clever and stupid.
Some of these products seem like they started as a joke. One person saying "hey, wouldn't it be funny if..." But I don't understand how someone invests money in the actual production of an item. It takes cash to make any product, let alone market it. I don't get it.
Isn't that what unfinished handmade rugs always look like? (before all the warp is woven into the weft)
Good god, no.
I think this is great! The advertising for the ICFF a couple years ago played off this same idea
What K T G said.
It becomes gimmicky when you keep the fringe on only one side. you can do this with any design and still get the idea across and yet have a better looking rug.
The rug is stupid, so stupid that it actually tricked me. While scrolling down the page I thought it wasn't loading fast enough... I have a headache though, so that's my excuse.
LOL, cassielynn, ME TOO - I actually paused scrolling to let it load, until I realized it was like that...
unfortunately, i don't have a headache to blame it on..
Not my cup of tea.
lol, we have shit computers here and my pictures always end up stretching and crap when I scroll. So I waited for it to fix itself... lol. d'uh me.
Oh my god, that's horrible and I would never have it in my house, but I'm still sitting here laughing.
Blegh.
Rug Internet Joke. Can you even imagine trying to explain this to all of your guests?
horrible
AAAAH! It's irritating enough on the computer, but several times as large, in real life.......... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
This is pretty terrible.
It's a brave idea and could work in the right space. I'd like to see it done, I think there is hope...
hey at least its funny! i kinda thought my computer was frozen
Hm, its an interesting concept, but I don't think it was pushed far enough to still be a marketable rug- not very attractive.
-Haha to valleyval's comment!
It hurts my head
It's pretty funny as a picture on the internet, but wouldn't it kinda lose it's appeal lying on the floor? Who would actually get it? Maybe if you were a graphic designer or and artist and hung it as a tapestry, but I would hate to have to EXPLAIN why my rug was funny to all my guests.
(Also I'm probably the only person in the world that thinks oriental rugs are fugly, so this is a double negative for me)
Its funny for a few seconds.
R. the Great...I haven't been able to get down with oriental/persian rugs either. You're not alone! The style is so not me and reflects nothing about my personality.
OK, besides the "joke" of it, this thing IS handsome! Basically, most of it is essentially stripes! What's wrong with stripes? Nothing! They're pretty and they're not hard to decorate with, and I think this would be VERY easy to make happen in a room.
And at the other end, it's an oriental rug, and they're pretty and they're easy to decorate with, too! The only issue I might have is one about color if I wasn't dealing with a room where those colors would work, but I think this is a very interesting piece, and shouldn't be dismissed so easily. I would love to at least see it in person. If I did, THEN maybe I'd be willing to hate it. Until then, I suspect I'd probably like it.
Honestly, these hot-or-not things seem to have almost become a test to see who can come up with the nastiest verbal eyeroll.
*gags ever so slightly* ha ha, I did actually think something was wrong with my computer, wonderful practical joke and display of bad taste!
meh.
I can't see why repeating an error makes for good design. This is about as attractive as paint spattered floorboards.
LOL @ valleyval. And I like the stripes part.
ha..thought my computer was 'acting up' as well...panic..it's horrid..
I love the concept of it. I can't really imagine how it would be applied to the home, but it really is creative.
What is a "dial-up modem"?
"Honestly, these hot-or-not things seem to have almost become a test to see who can come up with the nastiest verbal eyeroll."
YUP!
i feel stupid now for clicking refresh on my browser when i thought the image was loading properly..wow im not usually that dense
I want to hate it, but I really like it!
I don't think I've ever liked any of the Hot or Nots.
There needs to be an option for "interesting idea, but I don't want to live with it."
Oh, I love it! Artistic, topical cleverness that's also aesthetically beautiful, and that I'd actually be thrilled to have in my home. I think it's great.
PS: A great quotation from above: "Somewhere between clever and stupid." This sums up my whole life, and maybe the whole modern world??... Thank goodness for the quiet wisdom of AT....
But I still stand by this rug!!
awesome. would love to own this!
BLECCCCCHHHHH!
I kinda like it but I would like it even more if the stripes resolved at the other end back into Persian or even into something totally different, like an Aubusson design or something! Either way, the screen image streaking joke isn't even how I see it -- it's image dissolution in general, and the stripes are attractive, so I'd probably enjoy it.
haha. i love ironic furniture. would have to be in just the right setting to look good though.
it's clever, i guess. as a statement, i get it and appreciate it. but as far as an item i'd purchase to put in my home, you've gotta be kidding.
hahaha i love it but cannot imagine putting it on my floor!
