not. I hate those cut out things

It's not about whether it's "dated" or not--good design and decorating ideas should be timeless, not trendy.

To me the bigger issue is that it looks like someone cut out pages of old newspapers and tacked them to the wall. Which they did.

Perhaps if they were made with a Greek newspaper and held up with something other than pushpins...

I'm enjoying this idea. I would not, however, use old newsprint. I could see a dark paper, maybe a thin frame around each to highlight the shapes...

They would look better mounted on foamcore, then attached to the wall.

Fun, whimsical - I like it.

I agree with clampers. They should have been mounted, matted and framed. They would stand out against a strong color background and if neatly framed and arranged together, they would look great.

If you were the person who originally came up with the idea, it's hot, because it probably reflects your interests and sense of humor. But if you're copying the idea out of a magazine, it's not hot.

Like others, I think decent idea, bad execution. Maybe decoupaged on a darker wall, with tighter spacing, it could work.

I love paper, and think this idea is fun, but only if interpreted to reflect your personal design love... For me, I see an interesting font, blown up and cut out of foreign-language newspaper. Another interesting idea would be simple floral silhouettes, cut out of glossy fashion mag pages or old maps.

Oh... was also thinking that it could be fun cut out of brown kraft paper or old grocery bags.

Nice idea of using shapes and silhouette but can laso be a 'lil cheap looking with the edges fraying..

If it's mounted on mounting board or foam board to give it 3D effect.. that would be sweet... not sure if i like it as it is..

Love the idea, though I would probably change it up a bit, as many others have said. Unlike others, I also like it the way it is, though. I really like the various silhouettes, and the aged newsprint fits them perfectly.

I actually love how subtle the newsprint is against the pale wall. This is something I would have hated in black and white (way too harsh!).

However, I am really irked by the non-matching pushpins.

5th grade school project

Personally, I like this as is. I may be the only one but I like the way the unrelated images from the papers (they look like vintage magazines actually) become the décor of the vases, and I love the artist's studio feel. With the pushpins they seem like patterns for ceramic projects.

Would be more impressed if they collected various printed editions of "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and cut it out of those.

I am with Daniel. I like it as it is.

If they were framed with a black mat or something. I can't put my finger on it, but they look lonely and vulnerable just hanging there with those push pins. You have to respect the urn.

I voted Hot because I think the idea itself is hot as a starting point, but not this execution of it.
