Name: Moe Perez and Ryan James
Location: Oakland Hills, Oakland, California
When my spouse and I came across this small house with big views in 2007, we loved the open floor plan and the fact that the house, built in 1949 had only 2 previous owners. After purchasing the house and closing costs were covered on our 'new' home, we were left with a very limited budget. Not having money for a contractor or professional decorating advice, we opted to do all the work ourselves, one room at a time. We were inspired by the vintage Sunset Books and House Beautiful magazines from the 1950's and 60's that we had found at the local library and at garage sales.
The wall colors and furniture placements were based on the spacious 'open feeling' that both publications seemed to be promoting at the time. All the furniture was acquired through craigslist and some of it has been reupholstered with the help of some friends of ours in the area. The exterior paint and garden, done by us as well, were completed in 2009. The only thing we contracted out was a much needed skylight in the bathroom- neither of us were comfortable cutting a hole in the ceiling by ourselves.
We couldn't have done it without those inspirational Sunset Books or craigslist.....it saved us a bundle! People in the neighborhood always compliment us on how our home feels of another era.
Thanks, Moe & Ryan!
