Name: Moe Perez and Ryan James
Location: Oakland Hills, Oakland, California
When my spouse and I came across this small house with big views in 2007, we loved the open floor plan and the fact that the house, built in 1949 had only 2 previous owners. After purchasing the house and closing costs were covered on our 'new' home, we were left with a very limited budget.
Not having money for a contractor or professional decorating advice, we opted to do all the work ourselves, one room at a time. We were inspired by the vintage Sunset Books and House Beautiful magazines from the 1950's and 60's that we had found at the local library and at garage sales.
The wall colors and furniture placements were based on the spacious 'open feeling' that both publications seemed to be promoting at the time. All the furniture was acquired through craigslist and some of it has been reupholstered with the help of some friends of ours in the area. The exterior paint and garden, done by us as well, were completed in 2009. The only thing we contracted out was a much needed skylight in the bathroom- neither of us were comfortable cutting a hole in the ceiling by ourselves.
We couldn't have done it without those inspirational Sunset Books or craigslist.....it saved us a bundle! People in the neighborhood always compliment us on how our home feels of another era.
Thanks, Moe & Ryan!

Howard Butcher Bloc...
that's a great sink and vanity.
Your place is beautiful. Where did you find the bathroom sink and vanity. I love them!
I want your house.
Wow. The whole thing is great. Your kitchen is darling and I'm sure you really enjoy your yard. Good job.
Love.
beautiful! Love the landscaping.
So warm and beautiful....
Gorgeous. The sink and vanity are from the Ikea Lillangen series. I just installed them in my own master bath.
It looks professional to me. You really decorated for the house instead of trying to change it's character. I love the kitchen. Very well done.
Love it! Where can I find those lollipop outdoor lights?
Fantastic job!
All the more so since you did virtually everything yourself with the exception of the skylight installation. I wouldn't feel comfortable tackling that one myself either.
Great job. The living room couch looks amazing, even from the back. Lots of character.
Congratulations, it's a lovely home; I particularly love the landscaping.
I know Moe/Ryan said he got the furniture on Craigslist, but can anyone otherwise identify the couch? I am looking for something sleek and swoopy like that. (Is it comfortable?)
so warm and inviting!
I would never, ever have thought to put that mirror with the horizontal "brick" frame design on top of a wall of differing brick. But I absolutely adore it--and the rest of the house, too!
so.. when can you move out?
oh, and that mirror over the fireplace made me drool :)
Thanks everyone.....Yes, the sink is from the Ikea Lillangen series. It was just installed 2 weeks ago. It is really cool, but folks with children might want to install a back splash as the sink can spatter water when the pressure is turned on full blast.
for tasterspoon: the sofa was craigslist, but I was told that the original owner bought it in Copenhagen. We have yet to find out more ourselves. Below is a similar sofa that came up yesterday on craigslist. I hope this helps.

Thanks again, you all made us feel happy about our handiwork!

Oops. 2 more things. The sofa is comfortable.....
For mommapudding: lollipop light toppers were found at home depot. They were about $25.00
Moe and Ryan : )
Lovely, warm and cozy, if I visited I may never leave.
Thanks for the tip! We're getting out the measuring tape and checking it out. (Yours is still nicer!)
So much to love -
I hope you're not planning on "updating" the kitchen because it's perfect just the way it is!
Your place looks great. The nice furniture you have doesn't hurt either. :-)
To bepsf:
We're glad you like the kitchen as it is now........ we aimed to get the kitchen to look as close to the period as possible with getting too kitschy.
The Original Kitchen was 'updated' by the second owner in 1982 using all the trends popular at that time. When we found it, it had a large side by side bisque refrigerator, stainless steel stove with a white over -the- range microwave, beige tile with brown grout on the countertops that sealed in a pass-through to the living room, peach colored walls and a patterned linoleum floor. Luckily, the original cabinets were left intact. We really wanted to reopen the pass-through....so that meant removing the tile counter-tops and backsplash that was placed over the formica counter and on the walls in the 80's.
So what you see now is what we did based on our desire to keep within style of the house's era. (Armstrong floor tiles, white appliances, laminate countertops etc ). Our next door neighbor also helped by remembering what it looked like back in the mid 50's.
:)

Mid-c modern done right!
Stunning stunning. I'm shocked that the kitchen was restored and not completely original, it fits perfectly and I love the skylights. And just the peek of that couch is making me drool.
lovely! house tour please!!
This might be my favorite home I've ever seen featured on Apartment Therapy! So warm, inviting and sumptuous. I can't believe this was all DIY--so impressive and inspirational.
Bravo, Moe and Ryan! You totally captured that vintage Sunset vibe. I have lots of old Sunset books myself. Your home is lovely and the result looks effortless, though I'm sure it was a lot of work.
Absolutely love this place. Wish there was a full tour.
My only nitpick is that your aquarium looks overstocked. Hard to say though without seeing the full thing.
Thanks Alphonse......We'll check to see if AT will pursue a full tour. We have before photos that we could share with them.
Worry not about the little swimmers. The aquarium is 90 gallons, so only a little more than half the tank made it into the photograph. The fish were clustered in the corner area since they had just been fed. (In an earlier photo they were completely absent, so we had to tempt them into the shot with a little flake food.)

Drool! Where did you get those window treatments?
really beautiful!!! i'm planning to install a lillangen sink - can you tell me whether your faucet is ikea? i'm wondering if it will be a problem to install a single hole non-ikea faucet - any idea? thanks. great work!
Hey Joon:
Yup the faucet is Ikea too - although it seemed to be about kinda cramp in regards to the mounting room - a different single hole faucet might work, although the water lines provided by Ikea were very compact... but good luck!
Hey Beesee,
The window dressings were clearance bamboo match sticks rolls from Home Depot - the dressings for the entire house totalled about 100 bucks.
Very lovely. I grew up in an Eichler in the Bay Area...your place feels a bit like that though cozier.
Could you share what neighborhood in Oakland this is?
Re: coconut hill's question.
Our home is in the Lincoln Highlands section of the Oakland hills.
: )
I LOVE this place, and I want to see a full house tour. All of the furnishings and fixtures fit together harmoniously in a gorgeous golden glow. What I want to know is: Where did you purchase that hanging "partition" next to the globe on that perfect table/desk?
Thanks coarsetalk:
When we moved in we had a cool shutter style floor standing room divider that didn't quite fit in the room. We browsed the internet and when we saw the hanging partition online we laughed and thought we'd give it a try. We swapped out our other one on craigslist and got this one to replace it. It's very versatile and fun and not too pricey.

The decor is so perfect for this house that it's not fair. And that sofa is spectacular.
Not fair for grimy-apartment renters like me, of course.
full house tour PLEASE!!!
Moe and Ryan... I love it! But I need more shots of that gorgeous living room... I want to to devour all of the details! Full house tour please!

@ moeryan
90 gallons. Damn, I'm even more jealous of this place now.
Cool space! I hope to see a full house tour of your home. Left me wanting more!!
The living space with the fireplace is so inviting. Love the colors and the white sofa is a very interesting touch. Some of these colors are at the top of the trends list right now. Good job! Would be great to see more photos of the home. The exterior looks very nice as well.
I love your house! I would love to see more.
Love your house too! Would also love to see more. Also wondering what kind of floor is in your bathroom. I love the color. Thanks.
Thanks to everyone for their kind comments.
for jvjones13: The flooring was a marmoleum remnant that we got on clearance at a local flooring store. Since our bathroom was small, we found a piece of a leftover roll that fit. We like it and it is very durable.
This is quite stunning. Thanks for sharing.
I'm surprised at AT offering only a house call for such a great home so sensitively done yet there are other homes really not as exciting regularly getting the full visit. And isn't just about MCM ...
Why is that?
Perfect kitchen . . .
