Name: Kat, Jon, Canada the dog, and Corso & Sabine, sibling cats
Location: Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts
Size: 750 square feet
Years lived in: Rented 2 Years
Natural born thrifters, Kat & Jon have a thing for worn wood, chipped paint and soft leather. Their philosophy is that if something has held together long enough to make it to the thrift store, it probably has lots of life left to live. Theirs is a traveling feast of finds, a space chock full of personality...
This is the fourth manifestation for Kat & Jon: always evolving and responding to what each new rental wants. Thoughts of a clean, modern space were set aside when the heavy molding and worn floors begged for a deep, rich library-like feel and their collection of vintage finds seems to be thriving in the adapted setting.
Creative to the core, the house keeps changing and flexing with their whims. The main room has been a movie set, a photo studio, a silkscreening shop, a library, a dining room, and a company headquarters, each with its own layout and appropriate furniture.
They’ve recently rented an artist’s studio so that their shape-shifting business (currently a not-for-profit filmmaking school for kids) can have a home elsewhere and home can become a little more like home.

Apartment Therapy Survey
Our style: Thrifty, eclectic, and whimsical
Inspiration: The continual surprise of thrifting antiques shopping. We like to be inspired by the space, instead of forcing our style onto a space.
Favorite Element: The dollhouse that a family friend built in the late 70's — I've been toting it around with me since I was a kid. It's proven amazingly versatile! It's currently a linen cabinet, but it's been a pantry, dresser, bookshelf, craft cabinet, and back in the day, an actual dollhouse.
Biggest Challenge: In an old building there are always a lot of challenges, but overcoming things like hideous salmon spongepainting was easy.
What Friends Say: When's the next dinner party? And where's your tv?
Biggest Embarrassment: The flesh-colored exterior, which unfortunately we're stuck with.
Proudest DIY: There has been a lot of DIY'ing this space, but my favorite is probably the dresser drawer bookshelf. I'd like to make more of them eventually.
Biggest Indulgence: The leather couch and chair — a craigslist find, but quite spendy for us! It belonged to an Italian woman who lived in the North End for years, who passed it along to a grandson, who sold it to us. It's in like new condition and it has to be at least 40 years old!
Best advice: Be patient with your projects. Letting a space grow and change organically is much more pleasing than buying just to get it done.
Dream source: 127 Corridor sale — the world's longest yard sale at 654 miles long. I still need to check out Todd Farm.
Resources
Furniture: Craigslist, thrift stores (Boomerangs in JP, Thrift Shop of Boston in Roslindale, Goodwill in the South End, the now extinct Hadassa in Allston, and many many places in Chicago), and saves from the landfill.
Accessories: Vintage toys and cameras are either passed down from family or are eBay finds.
Lighting: Kitchen shades from Williams Sonoma; others: thrift
Rugs and Carpets: Bath is Urban Outfitters; Living is from RugsUSA.com; Kitchen is from eBay
Window Treatments: Living room fabric is from Sewfisticated in Somerville; Kitchen was from IKEA; Bedroom were sewn from Urban Outfitters tapestries
Beds: The bed was the first present my husband ever gave me. I left town for the weekend, and he salvaged the piece from a local thrift store, brought it to my apartment, and assembled it and painted it in my room. It's now one of my favorite things in the house.
Artwork: Prints: Matt Cipov and superkonductor.com; Boy Scout diorama by Nikki Hollander; Leaf woman painting by Kass Copeland; Aquatints by us
Paint: Living room is Behr Fedora; Kitchen is Benjamin Moore Half Moon Crest; and I can't find the bedroom paint chip at the moment.

Nomade Express Slee...
great ideas for an old dollhouse! I'm nabbing mine next time I got to my moms.
I love the dog best though
I want to like this place, in fact, I like the 2? rooms that I saw. But I don't feel that I actually got a look at a room but small parts of the house.
I understand that we want to be "artistic" but focusing/highlighting one object, creative angles and constant detail shots are more distracting than intriguing. I would really like to see the entire room and then detail shots that are worth the close-up (ie #9).
I wish I could be as comfortable as the occupants of this house. My DNA won't allow me to go coasterless on the coffee table.
Thanks for a peek at this inviting and welcoming abode. Kudos for your sense of style and imagination!
Love the floors, the dog and the reading nook. Looks like a very inviting home to me!
I like many things about the space, love the kitty. I like the chalkboard entries, too, but "Weltschmerz" is what those folks have. Still, pretty cool.
I liked the artistic photos. That shot of the branch on the metal chair was pure heaven. I think it's the best photo I've seen on ATB.
Thanks for sharing your space! See you at the thrift store.
I have the EXACT same chair with orange upholstery and canning (sp? canning? cane-ing?) that the dog is curled up on! I share your philosophy that if it held up long enough to get to a thrift store then it is probably a pretty solid buy. I love that you work to turn thrifted/found pieces into something cohesive and comfortable.
Pets on furniture certainly give proof of comfort, if any were needed. I love your chairs - really clever thrifting, they are!
Aw it's nice, very JP!
I think artistic shots are great, but so are easy to understand shots of a room. I'd like to take a house tour and get more than a fuzzy idea of what the room actually looks like. I couldn't draw a floor plan of this house if I had to. We need some quality control for these house tours, this is the second tour in as many weeks that has been less about the house decor and more about...[ok, bitching over].
Apart from the issue of the lack of "establishing" shots in this tour (which I agree with), I loved the gorgeous photography, great writing, and subject of this post. This is classic AT to me--a small space creatively outfitted by resourceful and imaginative owners.
I love picture 8 - it looks as if Jon is about to deliver some devastating criticism of the dog's movie script.
"Well, yes, I can see that it's an ambitious remake of 'To Kill A Mockingbird'... but I don't see why Atticus needs to be played by a beagle..."
As for the house itself...
I like the rich yet refined colours on the walls, the unexpected bursts of art in postcards and doodles, the unfussy blending of antiques and the fact that the lumps and bumps of the old house are embraced rather than fixed. It's utterly charming without being twee... which is a very rare achievement. I dream of living in a place like this.
However may I respectfully suggest that the faux tilt shift effect in the photos be strangled now, at birth, before it gets loose and invades other posts?
This should convince my husband that I'm not insane... lol He looks at me funny whenever I show him something vintage that might have a weird color or texture to it... I swear I'm not stranged... heheheh!
I enjoyed the tour and the wonderful moody shots taken. I thought they captured
the overall tone of your place. The slight blur, is more true to real life, because when you are at home and focused on the computer, reading or whatever
the rest of your view is not sharp. It made me eel that I was moving within your space.
Also, for being a rental in an older home you did fantastic job of making this a home. Good job!
fantastic home! love your lime-green sofa & chair. thanks AT for a great tour that is not just another MCM carbon copy.
It looks like a beautiful Wes Anderson-film. :)
Great home, great pictures!
I actually took a second glance at the stereo before I realized what I was really looking at there. I admit that I never imagined a stereo of that sort could be successfully integrated into contemporary decor. Admirable! I think it looks cool up there.
so very romantic...
Cute space.
The photo with the knives is... well, kinda creepy. Like a hand is going to come out of the oven mitt and grab one of the knives or something...
Also the cameras between the books on the bookshelves make me think of a nanny-cam. Are they trying to figure out which cat scratched the furniture?
Very unique and very nice! Cool cat too.
oh my. somebody has finally articulated my dream home. *swoon*
This place has personality. I can't quite figure out how to inject my place with it. Great to see it done so well here.
Beautiful. And don't worry about the photography . . . we're all just jealous of your skills. (ok . . I am. I can't speak for anyone else) :) I think all the shots are lovely and show your love for the home you live in. So we don't get a complete and exact picture. What we do get is FEELING. And I adore the love and warmth that come from every picture.
I very much enjoyed this tour, thank you so much for inviting us in!
Thank you all very much for your thoughtful comments. I was a little petrified to allow pictures of my space to be posted, but your comments have made it easier!
But tsk tsk blandwagon...those are real tilt-shift photos, not fake! That's just what happens when I'm left to my own devices with a nice camera and lenses...I wander around my own house taking pictures.
To address some of the comments about the establishing shots, I agree that I could have done a better job there, but I want to point out that my space is small - just four rooms total. So you are pretty much seeing it all, even if it doesn't feel that way. I probably should have included a floor plan. I wish I had done an establishing shot of the bedroom, but as we are now expanding into our new artist's studio, the house got completely rearranged and that incantation of the bedroom is now gone.
Thanks again for everyone's thoughtful comments!
Love this so much. What a pleasure to see!
Love it. Blandwagon has a knack for caption. Atticus will be played by a Jack Russel, I need to track down a set of Wishbone to watch with the grands. Thanks for reminding me of that great series.
Great place! I like the blackboard painted wall. Very homey.
Hurrah for JP! Your beagle and my foxhound should have a playdate.
ps- adore the dollhouse
great photography
Sometimes, you can just tell that people have a happy life together from looking at their home. This is clearly a happy home.
That green sofa is awesome, even if I only got to see peeks of it!
I believe I need to go out and get myself a Canon 24mm f3.5 TSE right now!
Good looking desk, BTW.
Great minds think alike! The dollhouse looks identical to the one my father built (I designed) for me in the 70's! I have used it to store everything from towals to books also! Love it!
Hate it. Good photography doesn't make up for a shabby home. There's "shabby chic" and pure shabby, and this is the latter. I won't disagree that there are a few beautiful pieces in there, but the house looks like every other run down old home in JP. I'm shocked to see it made it on here.
the use of color and the textures......sublime
Ridiculously beautiful light-drenched photographs--and I though you built yourself a pinhole camera . . . I think you could turn my mishmash into beautifully captured vignettes . . . I prefer this to the stop-action unedited tours where I see everything very well, multiple times, ad nauseum (takes a long time to click thru).
This home is so cozy and inviting. I love your blackboard wall, the lovely rug, and all of the books. I think books are the soul of a comfortable home. Oh, and your pets look like they love it there too. Can't say I blame them.
Film nerd!! Are you getting all taste police on Kat & Jons post. Some of us share thier sense of style, some of us don't... steady on!
I happen to like homes that have a certian faded quality. They (like this house) can have a certian romantic air that you just can't buy.
What a beautiful home!! Your cat is beautiful, too. I especially love your kitchen.
WOW, i like it. Really a nice "home", so warm.
Love this house! Very interestijng and full of personality. Has a wonderful warm feeling to it. Nice job.
This home looks very inviting & cozy - overall very "JP". I live in the neighborhood myself. However, I was dismayed to see the exterior photo of the backyard - this is ostensibly a dirtpatch with a hammock displaying no design direction whatsoever. I think this photo detracts from the cohesiveness of the tour, and should not have been included. Apartment Therapy needs to up its game regarding the quality of the exterior photos it chooses to feature.
LOVE your animals!
I love your big yellow doll house, I have the same one that
my grandfater built for me in the mid 70s. I would love to
see pictures of the inside of it. I never got around to redoing mine for my
daughter who is now 15.
Flesh colored?...
