Location: Midland, Michigan
Size: 1750 square feet
Years lived in: 23
Judy got in touch with us through the Apartment Therapy House Tour submission form and her style jumped right out of the email! Living in a place for a long time can make some homeowners complacent - but Judy has clearly stayed engaged. Keeping her home up-to-date and fresh, while tacking projects both big and small has resulted in a cozy, colorful family home with lots of texture and interesting pieces throughout.

Here's how Judy describes her home and style: My home makes me smile every time I walk in. I share my home with my husband, and our son Gabe, 17 and daughter Allie, 15, and our english bulldog, Ella. We have lived here 23 years-our very first house we bought! We have talked about moving but we are too in love with our home. It has three bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, office, living room, family room and finished basement. Our home is very cozy and comfortable and eclectic-mixing old with modern. The thing I love about my home the most is the way the sunlight shines in all throughout the day!

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our style: Warm, modern with old mixed in.
Inspiration: Design blogs, magazines and books, family, travel.
Favorite Element: All the windows and doors - the way the sun streams in all throughout the house from sunrise to sunset.
Biggest Challenge: This house is 50+ years old so nothing is straight or even when doing remodeling; adding charm to a very basic ranch
What Friends Say: "Can you come help me with my house?"
Biggest Embarrassment: Until recently, the main bathroom. We put off remodeling way too long!
Proudest DIY: Tin ceiling in living room and adding mudroom off family room.
Biggest Indulgence: Our backyard - it is our haven!
Best advice: Mix it up! For every modern/new piece bring in something old, recycled or handmade. Use your children's art. Take your time - it is fun to add to your space and collections over time.

One of my favorite house tours EVA... love the finishes, the paint choices, the furniture mish-mash and even the tchotchkes. The bedroom, especially, is well done. I love that you've taken a relatively small house, made it work, and have gone for the long haul in it. Good job!

this is wonderful. great mix of styles. i love the bedroom walls.
I love your home. It's so fresh and relaxing and the color coordination gives it wonderful flow. Bravo!
Love the color scheme, my house is mostly neutral earth tones with splashes of bolder color. I find this approach to be serene without being dull.
I really am glad to see an actual house tour (instead of small vingette pics.) Thank you for sending - you have a beautiful home and I love your color scheme.
I love it...this is absolutely charming. It looks like one of those homes featured in Better Homes and Gardens. I'm particulary in love with the subway tile in the bathroom as well as the wallpaper in the bedroom. Fantastic Job!
This is stunning! You have a knack for making neutral color palettes very interesting and pretty - which is difficult to do! Very well done - I love your home! I can see why you'd never want to move. =)
I love your house and I love Ella, too! <3
Your mix of old and new works so, so well! I love your front garden and Ella too!
Beautiful! Perfect handling of a neutral color palette. It looks so inviting. Love the bath, too. (Hi from Traverse City! Yay, Michigan!)
It's very clear that these people love their home. I do too! Lovely place. I'm curious about the art above the fireplace.
The owners describe their house as "a basic ranch." I would respectfully disagree. I think it's more cottage-y (inside and out) with that cute front porch, etc.
Just beautiful! I couldn't agree more with you about the sunlight. It keeps you home so warm and open. I like your philosophy about bringing in an old/recycled piece for every new one. It all fits perfectly.
I know I've seen that adorable pair of wooden birds on your shelves in the LR, but can't recall where. Can you point me in the right direction?
Enjoy!
i second oklagirl - great to actually see the house instead of picture after picture of artfully arranged vignettes, and what a lovely house, too!
karsha, I remembered the wooden birds, too! It was from a kitchen tour of Edna St Vincent Millay's farmhouse. Different birds, but definitely the same artist. Anyone know a source for these?

I LOVE that white couch and am looking for one just like it. Anybody know where it's from?
I Like how charming, warm and at the same time uncluttered the place is. usually people end up with a lot of stuff after living in the same place even just 10 years.
The bulldog is super cute too. Fits right in with the decor.
Love.
I love this house! I would definitely like to know the color used on the living room walls. I'm also curious about the triptych hanging to the right of the couch in the living room -- I love the color and the texture. What are they?
What a nice house - it's very fresh and pretty, but it also looks very functional and easy to live in.
Fabulous house tour! Great color choices on the walls and the rooms look so bright and airy. Very nice.
I like the dual paint treatment over the fireplace mantel...it gives the wall extra character and depth with the display above it. Overall, a very lovely home. I would smile walking though the door at the end of the day, too.
Aligirl: It looks like the Petrie sofa from Crate and Barrel.
me likey a lot
Agree with all the other comments--warm, fresh and inviting. I love that it seems "real" and not staged for effect.
Thanks so much for showing us your beautiful home. Your home is an inspiration to me - it has a timeless appeal, looks comfortable, lived-in and something that is possible to achieve without spending too much money (not cheap though! I've been holding back & saving so I can buy similar quality furniture over time)
Does anyone know where the wallpaper in the bedroom is from?
Wow. Great house. I love how it's modern but it's not TOO modern, if you know what I mean.
We want to thank you all so much for your nice comments on our house!! Its fun to share!!
The wooden birds are by Kristian Vedel and I cannot remember where I bought mine but I know that they are available thru MOMA Store.
The white couch is the Petrie sofa from Crate and Barrel. The fabric is very easy to clean even being white!!
The bedroom wallpaper is from Osborne and Little thru Rockwell House in Midland.
The living room walls (room with white couch) is by Dulux Paints color Moonstone. I think it is discontinued but they will look up color and still mix it up--I have had this color for about ten years now and had to repaint to freshen up walls and they looked formula up. It is such an awesome color--it changes throughout the day. The family room walls (off kitchen) is Benjamin Moore: Bleekers Beige.
The artwork in the Living Room to the right of white couch I purchased when we were on vacation in New York City. It is by artist Joe Conforti purchased at Desiron. (Desiron.com) It is tiny cubes of wood cut at different depths and attached to a piece of wood and painted in different shades. I couldn't resist!
Thank you again for you nice thoughts!!
judy42 - My first thought was MOMA for the birds, but I took a look and couldn't find them, that's why I asked. I have to search again. Thank you so much. Oh, and I too admired the Joe Conforti piece to the right of your sofa. Once again, a beautiful home.
Karsha-Thank you!! I just went to MOMA.com and they are available!! Click on shop and then type in "Wooden Birds" and both birds show up.
sarahbnyc: The wallpaper is by Osborne and Little the pattern is called Asuka and the colorway in my bedroom is F5400/04. It is a great, fun wallpaper!!
Lovely home! Great mix of different furniture periods and styles and a wonderful use of color. Neutral colorways can easily be boring and predictable, but this home is interesting and exciting. Bravo!
Anyone know where the side table next to the sofa is from. I think Target used to make an inexpensive one similar to that but it's discontinued.
Thanks!
Sorry for not being more specific. The white side table next to the gray couch in the last photo.
I absolutely love, love love this house! Did I tell you that I love your house? I love the brown tile in the bathroom (who does that?). I love, love the beautiful white frame filled with pictures. I love the colors and feel of the house. Very calm, relaxed and comfortable. I immediately added this one to my own list of favorites so I can easily come back to it as often as I want. Fantastic job Judy!
question for judy42, or anyone who has the petrie...i'm finally investing in my first real living room couch (aka, NOT one passed down from a family member). i love the look of the petrie...but is it comfortable? it seemed a little stiff in the store, but looks really cozy in these pictures. thanks for the help!
Ok so this is the MOST perfect house! It was posted on my facebook by someone and I just can't stop looking at it. Judy you should totally be decorating homes. Love the colors, the risk you take in changing up the style. It looks so much warmer than most modern homes.
that's a very beautiful yellowish color on the walls.... love it
Longtime since I've since a house this lovely and lovable! I love the mix of old and modern, the airy feel and the great design choices. I even like the color scheme, even its not my style. And the mademoiselle chair....aaaaargh
What's with the spam?!
Hi!! Thank you again for the great comments!! The glass tile in the bathroom is a glass subway tile that I bought from Custom Tile here in Midland...I can get you the info if you are interested!! The color is Khaki and is a little greener than the pics show.
The Petrie sofa is very comfortable. It is made well and really is a great couch.
The white round side table( in family room by beige sofa) is from Design Within Reach
I absolutely adore this house. You know when you see a house that is EXACTLY what you would create if you had the skill and innate knowledge of your own taste? Well, I rarely see houses like that, and this is it!! Thanks, Judy, for helping me figure out what I like!
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! I saw a previous commenter call it fresh and relaxing, and I couldn't agree more! Your family is lucky to live in this beautiful, liveable space!
Gorgeous.
Beautiful home!
Beautiful! I would move in whole kit and kaboodle. And another couch question, what is the family room couch? I am gathering lists for when we can finally get a new one!
Hi Grayla, the couch in the family room is from Design Within Reach--the Neo sectional. It is actually a slipcover, which is great for cleaning, but you would not know if from looking at it as it is a tight, clean fit. It is made very well and very comfy!! I have had mine since Jan 2006 and it is our main couch and it still looks great!! Thank you for the nice comment!
Question to Judy42 (if it's not too late): where is the big lamp in the living room from? I found something "similar" from Ikea, but it's nowhere near as classy as yours. Thanks!
Hi Pier723! Do you mean the arched light by the white couch? That is the Arco floor lamp and I bought mine at Design Within Reach, but I know it is available thru others sources too. CB2 has a nice arched floor lamp also!!
I have been lurking on this site for months now, but I finally created a user name JUST so I could say how much I love, love, love this house tour. :) Elegant without being stuffy, well-loved and lived in. Just beautiful.
I like the little sitting area (picture #15), and the light that streams in.
My house gets very little light throughout the day, but I've managed to live with that. The thing is I must be the only person in America without hardwood floors. Any chance of seeing more tours of homes with carpet?
I am stuck on the printed drapes with the pattern along the bottom, who makes them? and wow would I love to see a close up of those! Very well done, an immediate insert into my inspiration folder.
the puppy behind the door looks shy! so cute!!
mlmclarnon: I had the drapes made out of fabric that I had for about five years and finally decided to do something with it!! The fabric is by Galbraith and Paul and is still currently available because we had to order a little extra. I had them made at The Rockwell House, here in Midland. The bottom portion of the drape is a floral vintage looking fabric, which I could get the name of if you are interested in. Thank you!!
(Petrie delivered 2 weeks ago - SUPER comfortable, many naps and sleepovers already had.)
This house tour is fabulous! I am saving it all as inspiration for our house.. whenever we move into one. I love that it all feels bold, but is still so calm - this is a gorgeous, gorgeous place.
liking the tile in the bathroom walls - kudos for getting midland on here! im in mt pleasant just a hop away!
fantastic home. I'm wondering if decor is Judy's main hobby or a related profession?
Also are those the "rooms" from American Girl I see in one pic? I thought we were the only people that had those!
Hi Laurie! Decorating is my hobby--maybe someday professionally!! Thank you for the nice comment. Yes those are the rooms from American Girl! We collected those for my daughter when she was younger (thank goodness because they stopped making them!) and she still loves them at 15!! We love to "rearrange the rooms"!
WOW!! I'm in love with this house....great job! It makes me want to come and visit ;]!
Original.
Also loving your home over here! I'm crazy about the bed you chose. Was that new or a vintage find? If new, can you source it for us? Thank you again!
Such a beautiful home! I love it. Please can you tell me where did you get that wooden side chair in picture #18? Thanks!
Minus001: Thank you!! I actually found that chair for $5.00 at an antique festival in the town that I live in! I usually only read about people finding such a deal, but I scored on this one!! This is a copy of the Cherner chair, which is still being produced and you can find online.
Simply Stunning! I LOVE everything!
The collage of photos in that beautiful frame is such a neat idea!
Hi Judy- I love your home! Are your tolomeo table lamps the classic size or mini? Thanks!
Annie52: The two in the bedroom are classic and the one on the little round white table next to couch is mini. The mini takes a tiny bulb so will not be as bright--but is great for small area--so depending on where you need it. Thanks!! Judy
sorry--I meant anniez52!! :)
I love EVERY SINGLE thing!
I'd like to know what the green striped wallpaper is in the living room- or is that paint?
What a gorgeous home. Thanks for sharing!
What a great home with great style. Perfect. Hoping to find the source for the art over your fireplace ??
Thank you!!
KimKelley: it is paint and the color is 'Timothy Straw' by Dulux Paints. It is a great color and changes with the light.
jettsam: The cubes over the fireplace I purchased from an art festival that is held here in Midland every year. The artist name is Nathan Grubich and he has a store in Ludington, MI called Red Door Gallery and his website is www.ludingtonreddoor.com. The bigger cubes (seen a little in picture 11 in my kitchen are also from him) His work is awesome.
Hi Judy - me again - i can't stop looking at your slide show - I'm smitten. Wanted to also ask about the floor covering in the family room. Looks like sisal - is it? If it is can you give me some feedback on how it worked out for you with kids and pets. Thx
Hi jettsam! The big rug in the family room is actually a rug from Lowe's--it is not sisal--I believe just a wool/synthetic blend--it is ribbed so from a distance looks like a sisal/seagrass rug--but much more comfortable and spot cleans very well. I ordered a sisal rug for under my table but it was VERY uncomfortable for us--very pricky--so I sent back and ordered a seagrass rug which is much softer than sisal and you still get the look of a natural fiber rug--it feels very good on the feet and works well under table. But I don't think I personally would want it in a place where we sit on the floor alot, like the family room by the couch. I hope this helps!!
Jettsam: Also wanted to tell you that flor.com has carpet squares that come in all different colors/materials/designs and some look like sisal but are softer. They are great--you can order as many as you like to make the size of rug you want and you can replace just one square if something spills on it or get dirty. We have them in our basement and are very pleased with them.
amazing!!
i love it!!
i have to disagree, though, with those who have said they don't want to see the close-up detail shots.
without the close-ups, i never would have known the couch pillows were made of sweater material, or the print pillow on the bed is actually brown and white, not black and white as it first appears in the distant shot.
i like to see both distant and close ups.
and i COMPLETELY second the poster who said EVERY house tour should start with a floor plan so we can understand the flow!! yes, please! :)
kindly,

Thank you Judy for the rug advice. I like the flor tiles too but it gets expensive fast!
