Name: Vanessa Matsalla
Location: South Oceanside, California
Size: 1800 square feet
Years lived in: Owned 2 years

The words "California Cool" come to mind when you see interior designer Vanessa Matsalla's South Oceanside house. An earthy color palette mixes with natural textiles and textures. But contemporary—and even quirky—elements are sprinkled throughout the home, making for a dynamic space. The huge windows letting in a lot of natural light don't hurt, either.

I first heard about Vanessa when the home goods brand SWENYO sent me the lead; she came across their radar when she bought some of their products; they had a hunch that her stylish space would be a good fit for a house and studio tour. They were right.

But the handful of "new" products make up only a part of the eclectic mix of her home. She's got furniture and accessories from affordable home stores like West Elm, sure, but you'll also find vintage pieces she's thrifted and even items she makes herself from her line Studio Matsalla.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: California Eclectic

Inspiration: Anything with bold colors, nature and travel.

Favorite Element: In our home, we love the floor to ceiling windows in the main living room. We spend a ton of time enjoying our surroundings in this space. We can see our six plots of garden goods from all angles and are able to enjoy the orchard that we've been working on for a few years. This room literally brings the outdoors in and allows us to appreciate all that we have. Sometimes birds fly in through the screen door and perch themselves on our furniture ;)

Biggest Challenge: The biggest challenge of our home has been keeping the grass green! We have almost an acre of land with tons of grass that we've been slowly phasing out into a much more drought tolerant design. There's so much space and it's been a labor of love finding just the right plants to make it feel tropical and lush without expending any more water resources.

What Friends Say: My husband has collected Mid-Century furniture for a long time. Many of our friends think we're living in a perpetual episode of Mad Men. We'll take it!

Biggest Indulgence: Our biggest indulgence is on the horizon! We're going to be remodeling our kitchen and opening up the wall to allow for an open floor plan in the next few months. [The current kitchen is not photographed.] We're excited to breathe new life into the space that we spend so much time in cooking and entertaining together.

Best Advice: Be patient and everything will come to you in the right moment.

Dream Sources: I fall in love with the Jonathon Adler Maxine bar stools every time I see them. We're also in the market for a new sofa and lounge chair and I drool over anything from Jardan, especially their Wilfred sofa.
