I have been a longtime fan of the colorful, graphic prints and artwork created by Kristina Sostarko and Jason Odd, the duo behind inaluxe. The couple originally met at art school in the ’90s and then both worked in the music industry in Melbourne. In 2010, they made a move to the county town of Stawell near the Grampians National Park, about a three-hour drive from Melbourne. It is here that they bought their cute one-bedroom home situated on a large block with original old wooden sheds—perfect for housing all their art supplies.

Their home is cozy, with just the one bedroom and bathroom, yet it feels bright and spacious thanks to the clever layout of furniture, the paint colors, the curated collection of personal and decor items, and the colorful artworks created by the couple and other artists. Kristina and Jason are currently working on plans for an extension and renovation to provide them with more working and living space, so keep your eyes on their Instagram, as I’m sure we’ll see how their home expands and evolves—as well as more of their fantastic art.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: An oddball blend of minimalism and collector-mania. Creative and personal.

Inspiration: Vintage, found objects, nature, music, art and various forms of modernism. The Bauhaus made a huge impression on us both way back in art school, and still inspires today.

Favorite Element: Hard to choose, but the large rambling backyard, which was little more than a few trees and grass when we bought the place, is one we both love. There’s a mature Lemon Scented Gum, which is one thing we always had on our list of wants in a home. It was meant to be! The property houses three structures with the earliest being built around 1900, and the last renovation (prior to us purchasing) in the 1970s. I think we felt a connection to the strange mix of decades, and thought it was perfect for us.

Biggest Challenge: Working and living in such a small space. After five years, we are closer to the bigger home we need. We currently have Cooper Scaife Architects in Hamilton working on a plan for extension and renovation of the existing house. All going well, this time next year, things will look quite different.

What Friends Say: “This looks great!” Everyone loves the giant Gum tree too. The first time they see it, the reaction is usually something like, “Oh my god, look at your tree! You’re so lucky.” We spend a lot of time on the deck, particularly in summer, as we don’t have much room inside for entertaining, and this really opens up our options. It’s a great space when we have people over.

Biggest Embarrassment: Believing we bought a brick home, only to find it was weatherboard and had been poorly covered in brick. We’ve since then had the brick removed, and original weatherboard restored, and a new colorbond roof put on, to replace the old one they damaged. This is our first home, so you could say that was a giant learning curve. The bathroom and kitchen are in desperate need of renovation.

Proudest DIY: Being our first home, we haven’t been brave enough to embark on any full on DIY, but we built a brick paved area off the back deck ourselves, which we love. Next DIY is expanding this into paths through the garden. What was once just grass, dry earth and a few trees is now a landscaped garden. Planting out the garden, and seeing plants grow year after year has been a great pleasure for us both.

Biggest Indulgence: We love to buy art, music, books, vintage and handmade. I think the new renovation and extension will give us the room and freedom to really indulge.

Best Advice: Be yourself and enjoy your own style. There are no rules.

Dream Sources: Secondhand and vintage stores and markets mostly.
