Name: Maria and her two children
Location: Sant Gervasi — Barcelona, Spain
Size: 1,184 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting
Maria came to live in this apartment when she moved from Madrid with her two children two years ago. The apartment once belonged to her grandmother, so Maria remembers fondly coming to play here with her cousins when she was a toddler. The space looks quite different these days, though. When her grandmother lived here, it was heavy on dark wood. Maria has painted everything all white, transforming a once-dark home to a beautiful, bright and elegant space.
Maria describes herself as restless; she's never stayed more than four years in the same home. Someone who gets bored often and need variety in her living arrangements, she's lived in over 15 different apartments! It's this propensity to move often — and pack everything — that has led her to only keep in her home the indispensable; she hates to accumulate things. This all-white apartment has become a blank canvas to display the elements she finds more important — and a place she can decorate again without difficulty. She's thoroughly been enjoying her time in this space and hopes that this is "the" one...but time will only tell how long she lives in this space before moving on to the next adventure!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: I have a clean style. I love white. Neutral colors allow me to change as many times as I want. I can also describe it as minimalistic.
Inspiration: I think my parents are my inspiration! They have two completely different styles: my mom is more rustic and my dad is minimalistic and modern. So I take inspiration from both of them to create my own style. I also like Instagram, Apartment Therapy, Interior Milk and homepolish.com
Favorite Element: I have to say the horns of the corridor. I don't like hunting at all but they belonged to my grandfather so they have emotional value for me.
Biggest Challenge: The living room! I've changed the layout so many times! One day I will knock down the wall in the middle of the room to create a bigger space and I will put the sofas in front of the chimney.
What Friends Say: They really like it! It's surprising because it's not a palace, but they love the light and they enjoy coming over (and I really enjoy having them).
Biggest Embarrassment: The glass doors of the living room! I don't like them at all!!! They don't belong here!
Proudest DIY: The other day I painted the front door black and I think it turned out really well! Another thing I'm really proud of is the side table in my children's bedroom; I bought it in an antique shop but the finish was not good at all, so I spent one day stripping it. It was worth it because I really like the result.
Biggest Indulgence: It's yet to come!!!! I want to buy a new amazing rug for the living room but I'm not wowed by any yet.
Best Advice: I like to do everything step by step…you can start with the basics and then, by listening to your house you can start decorating. Step by step is the best way to do it!
Dream Sources: I love AD magazine…I love to see what everyone else is doing in their houses.
