On her personal website, A Dapper Line, Steph Rager describes herself as “50 percent muralist, 30 percent illustrator, 15 percent sign artist, and 5 percent champagne drinker.” It’s hardly a surprise that, like her art, her home is a brilliantly laid-back mix of color and crisp lines. Each room is filled with meaningful artwork and furniture with stories, creating a welcoming space without ever sacrificing style.

Steph is a creative director who is always ready to take on any artistic project, and she wants her home to allow her to do this. She surrounds herself with art that she feels connected to, be it her own work or a friend’s. When creating her home space, it was important that it embraced creativity and community. When it comes to interior design, she aims to further enforce those qualities. She notes, “My general rule for artwork is that I like it to be my own or have some personal connection. Everything that I have up in the house was either done by me or a very close friend”.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Airy + laid-back

Inspiration: Colorful patterns, public art, friends’ homes

Biggest Challenge: Saying yes to too many things

What Friends Say: That I could become friends with just about anyone. Also, that I lose things constantly, but somehow, they always find their way back to me.

Biggest Embarrassment: Oh, there’s all sorts! Everything from failed attempts at getting into medical school to the fact that I pronounced dachshund as “dash-hound” today.

Proudest DIY: My entire business (kidding, but not really kidding!). Also, I’m pretty happy with my recent pillow-making spree.

Biggest Indulgence: I get a monthly wine subscription that is out of this world.

Best Advice: Be present.

Dream Sources: Most of the items I prize the most (or that I drool over in other peoples’ homes) are ones that were found abroad while traveling.
