Name: Jackie Blair
Location: Lake Orion, Michigan
Size: 882 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years, rented

Jackie is a photographer and social media creative who loves to travel. She lives in a townhouse condo with her son and her new puppy. By keeping her condo neutral and simple, she has turned it into a peaceful hangout spot where they can all play and relax. Though living in the rented space comes with its challenges, Jackie strives to add the family's personality wherever possible.

"I felt very lucky to have this condo after not having my own place for over a year," Jackie says. "I applied for it one spring, but the couple who owns it chose someone else. Lo and behold, six months later, it was available again so I got it!" The home itself is cozy, but Jackie acknowledges it isn't perfect. "There are design limitations like the carpet, light fixtures, and wall color."

To distract from those elements she dislikes, Jackie brings only things she loves into her home: family heirlooms, art and photos, lots of black and white accessories, and her West Elm sofa she loves so much. "I waited months to get it," she says about her hunt for the perfect sofa. "I was scouring Craigslist for a good deal. I almost considered buying my sectional new, and then the very next day, the exact one I was interested in was listed on Craigslist for half the price by a home stager. Good things come to those who wait!"

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Neutral Boho Modern

Inspiration: My travels, and black and white simplicity.

Favorite Element: Black and white textiles, travel finds, my bookcase, and custom art.

Biggest Challenge: The dining space and bar!

What Friends Say: They love the style and immediate say something when they walk in the door.

Biggest Embarrassment: The home's ceiling fans, the laundry is in the kitchen, and the lack of a dining table and bed frames! I'm still making decisions on investments.

Proudest DIY: The tripod lamp was a challenge. It still has its quirks. I like to make my art feel custom — so I tend to customize frames and finishes for the decor of my home, like my grandparents' vintage photo frame that I put around a metallic dry erase board to mix old with new function.

Biggest Indulgence: My West Elm couch.

Best Advice: Look for what you love that exactly fits your need, invest in pieces slowly, don't overbuy on trendy decor that you'll tire of the next season.

Dream Sources: West Elm, and the mixture of my favorite places to travel like Nashville, Nepal, Traverse City, and my very own Detroit.
