Name: Lisanne and Romy
Location: Utrecht, The Netherlands
Size: 430 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting (Romy moved in half a year ago)
Lisanne and Romy share a tiny apartment — only 430 square feet! — in the heart of historic Utrecht. With space maximization in mind, these roommates purchased appropriately sized furniture. Elements that match the women's personalities fill the cozy Dutch canal apartment. And though the apartment floor is small, their style choices make the home feel airy and bigger than it is. If only moving into the apartment had been easier...
The girls enter their apartment through the shop downstairs and share the second floor with the store's owners. Steep stairs lead up to a level with Romy's room and the bathroom. More steep stairs lead up to Lisanne's room — with a ladder to a lofted bed! At the mention of "moving day," both girls cringed.
In many Dutch buildings a pulley mechanism hoists furniture through the windows. Unfortunately, this building doesn't have a pulley. The roommates had to disassemble all the furniture, squeeze each piece up and through the precarious staircases, and then put it all back together again.
Judging by this rental's finished look, though, it seems like any moving day hassles were well worth it.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Sweet, dreamy, eclectic, a mix of new and vintage products with a girly touch.
Inspiration: Our own creative vision, Pinterest
Favorite Element: The beautiful and magical view of the Dom Tower, especially in the evenings while drinking tea (or wine) in front of the window.
Biggest Challenge: Both agree: Setting up the home to look as light and spacious as possible. And walking down the steep chairs is a big challenge. Lisanne adds: Making space for some meditation or yoga.
What Friends Say: I didn't know that this house was so cute inside.
Biggest Embarrassment: Our biggest embarrassment is that we don't own a washing machine. So we have to do our laundry at our parent's houses or at a washerette.
Proudest DIY: Lisanne: The decoration above my bed and stairs. I'm obsessed with the moon, and I want her to be as close as possible.
Romy: The artwork above the couch, and the wooden furniture I made with my dad.
Biggest Indulgence: Lisanne: My hanging chair.
Best Advice: Go treasure hunting and give some old furniture a new life.
