Leo and Daniel consider themselves fortunate to live in a stunning, spacious San Francisco apartment overlooking the city’s skyline. Daniel’s parents own the building, so he and his sister (who lives in the unit above the couple) got first dibs. There are many advantages to this set-up, one being that Leo and Daniel had complete freedom when renovating and customizing the space. The end result of the huge project was a beautiful, modern blank canvas that the couple can fill with their growing furniture collection, as well as art from their closest friends.

Daniel’s Scandinavian heritage and Leo’s design background definitely influenced the home’s vibe, seen in the minimal accents and decor. But the couple’s love of West Coast craftsmanship is also sprinkled generously throughout, evident in the custom daybed, kitchen bar stools, and countless pieces of art hanging on the walls.

Though not always possible (due to the potentially hefty price tag), the couple strives to follow their own advice of buying custom or original furniture. They went as far as living without a dining table for months, waiting for just the right piece of furniture. “We try to keep the big box store purchases to a minimum,” they say. “You’re bound to find something better from a local craftsman or vintage store.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Eclectic Modern. We view our apartment much like an art gallery. A blank canvas for us to display our growing collection of art, furniture and lighting.

Inspiration: Daniel’s Scandinavian heritage and our shared love of the West Coast are the biggest inspirations for the style of our apartment.

Favorite Element: Our favorite element is the view from our dining room window. We’re fortunate enough to live in one of the most beautiful and socially progressive cities in the world. Waking up to the city beckoning below is what gets us out of the apartment even on the gloomiest of days.

Biggest Challenge: Coping with, and understanding the far reaching depths of the Diderot Effect. Curbing the process of spiraling consumption by using existing pieces with new finds!

What Friends Say: “You can’t fart in a place like this!” (Verbatim)

Biggest Embarrassment: Our Squatty Potty. It’s amazing and we love it, but that doesn’t mean we’re not ashamed of it.

Proudest DIY: We took cheap Urban Outfitters bookcases and with a couple of cans of spray paint, applied an ombre effect that makes them appear more fashion forward than they actually are.

Biggest Indulgence: The living room rug was a custom design in silk and wool that was worth every penny. We splurged on a custom daybed from a local fabricator we love, and we lived for four months without a dining table, waiting for just the right one to arrive from London.

Best Advice: Build a palette, share inspiration with one another and take your time. The best approach is a layered one. Also, try to keep the big box store purchases to a minimum, (no more than 30% of the total design), you’re bound to find something better from a local craftsman or vintage store. If you can avoid it, never buy knockoffs; it’s unfair to the original design and usually of worse quality.

Dream Sources: Dimore Studio’s new line of furniture and lighting is currently making us drool.
