In the current issue of Metropolitan Home, Lisa Skolnik presented a green rehab in Bucktown, the home of Smog Veil Records owners Frank and Lisa Mauceri. The project is the first home in Illinois to earn Gold LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.
Our favorite photo is of the living room, shown above, which features Togo seating from Ligne Roset, a company that spans the bridge between the tastes of minimalist Frank and mid-century modern fan Lisa. Lighting is vintage Artimede floor lamps and a Foscarini Supernova pendant. The rug is by Nani Marquina.

Uh Oh...
...I want to redecorate my Living Room now.
I love everything except that togo seating. It looks like someone killed and skinned the Michellin Man.
I.M.Jealous and I don't know where to begin with my questions regarding many fabulous design ideas.
I'm frightened that I now may be researching the idea of a glass wall.
ya know, it's not terribly difficult to decorate a living room and make it look good when you've got a budget including $20k for couches.... Ditto for the approx $5k four seat kitchen set.
sure I love those rooms.... but I knew about (and drooled over) the exact same ligne roset couch and kartell dining set for over 5 years. Of course the red carpet is stunning, but so is it's pricetag! :-o
this spread is simply just not a design option for us mere mortals with day jobs. We can't even emulate these unique designs, so this photo spread is a bit irrelavent IMO.
dc and s is right -- but still, a fine home
Green is good. The exterior is clean and the bath is nice, but I'm not seeing anything exemplary at these prices. I don't usually like to express my opinion with analogies, but I have to agree with the Michelin Man comment regarding the living room furniture. I'm especially not loving the heavy handed cleverness with the "Office with acoustical matting as a decorative element". Maybe I would have a better impression in real life, but based on these photos, you can't say "trend surfing, nouveau riche" any louder than this.
i agree! I could easily put together a beautiful place like this if I had this spendy budget.
BTW - Does the Togo couch really cost 20k?
DC&S--
Emulating this style on a $4000-5000 budget really isn't that tough...
An 8x10 Red Shag or Flokati rug can be had for less than $1000
Dark wood or concrete floors could be painted or stained Ebony for not too much dinero.
A couple gallons of Pale Blue/Grey paint is as cheap as any other color.
Pewter or Ivory Silk drapes are $99 a panel at West Elm
White tufted Leather Sectionals with matching armless chair and ottoman are available on Ebay for @ $2500-$3000 shipping.
I dunno, I think this house is great in an aspirational way. But what I want to know is what the hell they do on the side besides run a little record label out of their house, to be able to afford rehabbing (and green rehabbing at that, which we can assume is a pretty penny) a 3-flat in a super-desirable neighborhood in the city!
Heh, I was thinking the same thing. Everyone I've personally known that has run a "little record label" has another primary source of wealth (e.g. inheritance, studio work, 9-5 job, whatever).
about the togo:
when I was 9 years old, I fell in love with it. 2 families we knew had gotten it (each in a different fabric), and I loved going to visit them just so that I could sit on the togo. I vowed that when I moved out of the house, it would be my first sofa.
It was.
I bought it as a grad student. Mind you, just the 3 seater and the pouf, but even *we* (my grad-student co-habitating partner and I) could afford it.
And now, 19 years later (!), we are replacing it with more Togo. We are not rich (we are mere mortals with day jobs), but have found that throughout the year, if you keep an eye out, there are promotions and sales and such. As well, sometimes you are able to talk merchants into a discount (afterall, they want to sell to you). We are definitely NOT spending $20,000 for our togo (much less than half that!!), and are getting more pieces (i.e., a corner in addition to what is pictured above).
As for this house, yes, it is spacious, but take a good look: the actual living area is much smaller than that of a monster house, and even though it has high-end finishes, it is still just a 1-bedroom house with no land to speak of. Since they house their business in their home, I'm guessing that they are able to write off a lot of the costs associated with those rooms; probably there are financial incentives at the state or local level for going green as well.
the bitter comments about cost, and the nouveau riche are so tired, and tiresome. it is sad that every single post with an architecturally-designed project spawns them...
Let's do it for less.
Red shag rug, $449.00:

I didn't care for the sofas and chair at all. looked like an overstuffed futon mattress without a cover. Or a pill bug.
But this style I like, chaise, $1,019.00:

And this, which is about as opposite of the Michelin man as one can get, $1,499.00:

It doesn't look very comfortable though, does it? Instead of the round table in the corner, maybe the boxy ottoman from the Couchoid group could be the table AND seating. Everyone is doing that these days.
I like this too, $1,049.00:

How about this blob table for end tables?:

Or keep your eyes open and look for local items:

For dining chairs, very inexpensive at Dwell UK (NOT the same as Dwell in the US):

Small glass and metal table:

Light on the floor:

For the floor, concrete acid stain:

These above things don't come with a pedigree. They don't have first and last names, and they don't come with a certificate or bloodlines. But they could give you that FEELING in your home of the images that you see in the photo spread.
And if you used them, I think you would get ooohs and ahhhs over your airy, open looking dining area. And you wouldn't need the Home Heart Start jumper cables if someone spilled on your sofa or rug.
This house is beautiful. I think the Togo sofa looks good here, but I've never really understood the pull of this sofa. I've sat in them in the ligne roset store and don't find them that comfortable.
...they are incredibly comfortable to sprawl on when watching a movie or tv or just hanging out -- in showrooms you don't get that intimate with a sofa...
It's easier for me to get past the togo sofas in this home (which i never really cared for) and still love it; there's wind turbines on the roof!
i would move in in a heartbeat.
the togo sofas look sooooo comfy!
Great interior!!! but someone obviously went crazy at the ligne roset store!!!
You can buy Togo "reproductions" at 1/2 the price. There is a store in Chicago called Home Element that sells it. Seems like most of their things are from China so I am sure there are other retailers around the country that would have this reproduction. I am not one to comment on the ethics of buying fakes but just wanted to give the info ...
We have one white ligne roset sake couch in our living area (paired with other seating) and we have a pretty strict policy of no food, no shoes, clear liquids (white wine, vodka and water at our parties only!) etc... I can't imagine the entire living room with white sofas!!! Mind you, the fabric quality from Ligne Roset is excellent so the cover can be washed in the washing machine with oxyclean. But the trouble of it all...
Is it just me or does the exterior of the house looks rather blah? Maybe the inheritence ran out after the Togo sofas?? :)
Anyone know where this is in Bucktown?
It's in my neighborhood, but I can't place it.
@alisong,
you may not be able to place it because there are many houses in Bucktown that look like this one from the outside. that's not meant to be judgmental. It's just that the landscape has changed pretty dramatically in this neighborhood over the past few years.
monika1:
I do apologize, I intended no offense. My statement was intended to express my agreement with another's dislike of this furniture. I'm not saying the furniture you love is inferior and those that like are, as well. My opionion is also not becuase this space is "architecturally-designed". Most of my taste is based on what I've learned from following professionals.
Which just goes to show, that what is heard depends on the listener!
Bravoâ¦â¦â¦. your home is absolutely stunning! The vision, choice of color and use of material is such a breath of fresh air especially in such a traditional âHome Depotâ world we live in. You are truly an inspiration. How long did the project take to complete and was the building entirely gutted inside with just the outer brink frame left intact?
What kind of window treatments did you get in the living room? And where did you get them?
COOL looking place.
Functional?
Kitchen: not much prep area counter space?
Living room: I've tried sitting and sprawling on the 'Togo'.
I guess I'm not tall enough for sitting; trying to take a nap across those 'speed bumps' doesn't work either.
Bedroom: at least you didn't waste your money on Ligne Roset's expensive (Peter Maly?)platform bed.
Not comfortable.
Personally, I like air-flow under my mattress.
Cold floor?
Bathroom: two faucets into one sink?
I kinda like that; as long as I don't intend to fill it for any reason.
Esthetics in this place are sweet, but another sacrifice of comfort for looks, I dare say.
That is so funny!! Me and my boyfriend walked past this house 2 weeks ago. It's on the same block as Akira for Men but on Winchester. The turbines caught my eye along with the sliver of windows that brings in so much light.
It looks so much bigger in these pics though. I knew it was spectacular on the inside!
