Owners Jora and Bryan remodeled a hillside home into their MidCentury-style dream home with an evident focus upon its greatest asset: the unbelievable view. The house is quite a showcase, filled with a tasteful assortment of thoughtfully chosen furnishings and an open-space floor plan that extends out into their expansive backyard where surprises like a hanging hillside deck, organic garden and even a chicken coop take advantage of their property expanse. We're wholeheartedly envious, but we're glad to be able to share a peek inside such a showcase home...
My/Our style: Mid-century modern with an organic feel.
Inspiration: The windows and views.
Favorite Element: Again, the windows and views!
Biggest Challenge: Having some dangerous areas in the house for our two small children (open staircases, wide railings, several balconies, etc.), yet wanting to maintain as much of the original design and features as possible. Also, this was our first ever home remodel so we had a huge learning curve.
What Friends Say: The house is so open and bright!
Biggest Embarrassment: The laundry room/storage area. It is a disaster!
Proudest DIY: The vegetable garden and raising chickens.
Biggest Indulgence: Our bathtub in the master bathroom (a WetStyle soaking tub)...let’s just say we committed to buying it at the beginning of the project. Had we made the decision later on, we probably wouldn’t have indulged quite a bit. However, it is definitely worth it!
Best advice: Let the house speak for itself.
Dream source: Design Within Reach.
Appliances: Miele cooktop, grill, warming drawer and ovens (including a Speed Oven which acts as a microwave and convection oven – love this!!), Sub-Zero refrigerator, Bosch Dishwasher/Washer/Dryer, Kohler K-3160 Kitchen Sink, WetStyle bathroom sinks and bathtub
Furniture: Living Room
Accessories: Dining Table by World Wide Originals, Eames Molded Plastic Side Chairs, American Leather Sofa, Nelson Platform Bench, Saarinen side tables, Eames Elliptical Table, Bertoia Diamond Chairs, Cherner Chairs (at kitchen counter), Eames Desk, Argington children’s furniture
Lighting: Original ceiling fixtures throughout, Tolomeo lamps in living room and master bedroom, Akari Square Lantern Table Lamp, George Nelson Bubble Lamp, Sputnik lamp in son’s room
Rugs and Carpets: Atlas Carpet in family room
Tiles and Stone: CaesarStone countertops in kitchen and baths
Beds: Case Study by DWR
Artwork: Mark Hobley, Adorno Bonciani
Paint: Benjamin Moore low-VOC Aura interiors paint (OC-38 Acadia White interior and exterior, HC-98 Providence Olive trim, 2015-30 Calypso Orange in son’s room)
Flooring: BR-111 Brazilian Teak (cumaru) from sustainably forested hardwood
