When couple Kate and Damien purchased their San Luis Obispo home about a year ago, what they had in mind was creating a space inspired by the comfortable-modern decor of Palm Springs and some of their favourite designers tied to the California based aesthetic. Their home is a real world, real people template of solutions, mixing and matching pieces from national retailers with online finds, antique stores and finds from trips out to the very city that inspired the decor itself. We like to think of it as a little wing of Palm Springs lifestyle up in the coastal community of San Luis Obispo...
AT Survey:
My/Our style: I would classify our style as simple, comfortable modern.
Inspiration: Our inspiration for our remodel and furnishing came from a variety of sources including Palm Springs Modern, The Viceroy hotel in Palm Springs, Kelly Wearstler, Jonathan Adler, Shag, Apartment Therapy, a plethora of magazines, Amy Butler and any other funky sources we come across.
Favorite Element: The master bathroom! We also love the potential of our house, we have so many more projects and we are really excited to see the house totally complete. We also love the huge windows this house has, then let in so much natural light.
Biggest Challenge: Lighting was an issue, because there was not a lot of overhead light, but most rooms had switches wired to outlets, so we had to use a lot of lamps. Another challenge has been prioritize what things to remodel/update first, there were so many things that need to be redone that we had/have to be very smart about how to spend our remodel money.
What Friends Say: Everyone seems to love our house and they are amazed with the transformation we have made in this house since February (when we bought our house)
Biggest Embarrassment: Our kitchen, it is all original (and our house was built in the 60’s) we are planning a redo eventually! The landscaping also is in desperate need of some love.
Proudest DIY: My (Kate) proudest DIY is my front door! I painted it (which took several coats of primer and paint) and picked out all of the hardware. We are also very proud of picking all of our interior paint colors ourselves – that is not an easy task!
Biggest Indulgence: In the remodel our biggest indulgence was tile for the bathrooms and the tub in the master bathroom. And when decorating our biggest indulgence was probably the Nelson Saucer Pendant in the entry and the Bourgie Table Lamp in the living room.
Best advice: The best advice we got was from my (Kate’s) mom, she stressed to us that it is better to spend a little more money and get what you really want or wait and get good stuff over time instead of buying all ok stuff at once because you will just end up replacing the cheap stuff and spending the same amount of money or more in the long run.
Dream source: Design Within Reach, Kelly Wearstler and Jonathan Adler furniture and rugs.

Resources:
Hardware: Chiasso
Furniture: Design within reach warehouse sale, Crate and Barrel, CB2, Ikea, antique stores (Palm Springs has the best ones!)
Accessories: Jonathan Adler, Pottery Barn frames, antique stores, ebay
Lighting: Online sources (generally ones that have free shipping)
Flooring: Lumber liquidators, Home Depot
Rugs and Carpets: Urban Outfitters
Tiles and Stone: Ebay (we got some great glass tile for our guest bathroom from ebay)
Artwork: Shag, Esty
(Thanks, Kate and Damien!)

White Enamel Flatwa...
love the orange front doors, I have been toying with that idea as well.
Those front doors are amazing. Great job! I love the bathrooms, and that is a killer desk.
The advice on waiting and buying the good stuff is right. I've made my own mistakes over the years, and have given away so many "wrong" pieces.
Wow I love your bathroom and your dog is cute!
Everything looks great! Would you mind sharing your source for bathroom fixtures (specifically the sinks in both bathrooms)? Thanks!
Awesome home.
(#17, last bathroom pic) Where did you get that brain poster?!!
Awesome front doors!
One complaint: Damien is wearing the wrong colour shirt when holding the puppy. We need contrast to see all the cuteness.
The orange doors are stunning and so are the house numbers... perfect. Lots of beautiful things.
Too bad about that keep calm poster over the bed.
What did you do with that awesome fireplace?
Love the place!! I have the same couch and chair too!!
Thanks for sharing
What cool digs for such a cool little town. I heart SLO.
I love it...especially the bath tub!
love the front doors!!! your dog is absolutely adorable. great job guys!
LOVE. My only niggling criticism is that I want the living room rug to be bigger, but I completely get the fact that big rug = beaucoup dollars, and UO is a good source for smaller, yet still creative and interesting area rugs.
Someone has a pink tummy. Who has a pink tummy? Who?
So pretty, especially the bathroom. Love the free-standing tub.
But "Keep Calm and Carry On" over the BED?!
Hmmm......
I think it's British humor, kellyk.
great house! where did you get the colorful moose, deer, and rhino heads at? i love those!
That bathroom is SWEET! Doggie is super cute too!
great job! great style!
I am a shower person but that bathtub with that light fixture above it looks lovely. all the tile in the bathrooms lookso nice, too.
I hope that is the little one's chair and you dont disturb him.
Thanks for sharing!
I love this entire home - it seems so happy!
your home is gorgeous. it puts the "ooo" in Bee-ooooo-T-full!
I would love to get a better look at the print/chalk drawing/painting in the office that looks like a bunch of people with swimming caps on. Who made?
Great home! Would you mind telling me where you got the pendant above the dining table?
Okay, I'm done staring at your dog's tummy and ready to comment on your home.
First: As someone who grew up in an MCM housing development, I must say the color of your front door is spot on. I passed similar doors while toddling towards school, clutching my Peanuts lunch pail with a busted thermos inside.
Second: Surprisingly, I don't mind that poster being above your bed, because it makes sense within the context of emptying your mind for sleep (yes, I stole that line from TS Eliot).
Third: SLO for the win!
Fourth: Who has a pink tummy? Who?
Don't rub that pink tummy too hard. Bostons are among the gassiest of dogs.
Um. There is a dog on your lovely chair.
Down. Down. Git down! Bad dog.
Close your eyes and think of Mother England, kelleyk. ;)
darn cute dog and a great home
I love the Jonathan Adler greyhounds. I was thinking of buying them, and having seen them in someone's home now, I know I -need- them.
Also, your dog is gorgeous.
Oh! I just got the joke... y'know, having "Keep Calm and Carry On" posted over the bed. D'oh! Now I iz ded from teh funny.
Thanks to everyone for your input on our house! It is our first house as a married couple and so we had to get creative – to keep the cost under control! Because anyone who has done a remodel knows how quickly the cost can get out of hand. Olive is the name of our puppy that is a much loved puppy, but yes quite gassy! So here are some answers to questions other AT lovers had:
skd - the vanity and the storage piece in the master bath are actually dressers from West Elm that we put counter tops and sinks on, and in the guest bathroom the two sink consoles were purchased on clearance at Home Depot
hissingsissing – the brain poster in the guest bathroom is actually Cavallini & Co. wrapping paper that I got at a website called www.touchofeurope.net and it came in a set of 3 or 4 of those vintage looking medical posters, that I framed
cbboard – the moose, deer, and rhino heads were purchased at a local store, but they were just plain cardboard when I bought them and then I took cool wrapping paper from companies like Cavallini & Co. and Snow and Graham and covered each piece before I put them together.
mojjo7 – The painting in the office is by an artist named Shag, that particular painting is titled ‘Tuff Break’ but here is his website you can check out his other cool pieces www.shag.com
idea chick - the pendant above the dining table was from CB2 I think it was called the eden pendant lamp, it was originally wired for a plug but I had my handy husband rewire it and it works like a charm
I love those doors! great idea for the vanity cabinet!
Sweet little pup! Great photography. Nice and bright. The freestanding tub is awesome. The orange doors, beautiful. If you guys ever have kids, you're going to be hating the white living room furniture.
Beautiful work so far; I will be interested to see what you all do with the kitchen. A quick question: the Eileen-Gray-ish table in photo 7 -- do you remember where you found it? TIA. Oh, and I'm also curious: what is the lovely color in the living room now? Was it a question at all to remove that rather cool (from the photo, at least) freestanding fireplace? Did you relocate it within the house or relocate it altogether?
I like the place but there is not one original thought in the whole place.
on my 'puter the front doors look red...?
that dog is crazy adorable.
good job on the bathroom.
I absolutely love these doors and am desperate to paint mine the same or similar, like a fire engine red! Thanks for the inspiration!
I absolutely love your home. As almost everyone before me has mentionned, those front doors are to die for.
I don't see a great deal of personality but a lot of showroom quality vignettes. Every design cliche' from 2005 brought together in one place.
I love the front doors, the bathrooms, the metal desk, and, or course, the dog.
Everything looks a little too brand new to me and would personally like a few more older pieces. This is most likely why I loved the cross stitched piece, it seemed to add a little bit of history. Most likely many would say the complete opposite of my home, too much history not enough new.
All in all it is a beautiful home.
That pink tummy stole the show! That said, it looks clean and modern yet I find some of the bathroom fixtures too obtuse for the space they are in. The same hold's true for the furniture. Those wonderful leather tufted chairs look out of place on the rug and in it's cold surroundings. Something is amiss. Sorry.
Why can't we just let people enjoy their "Keep Calm" posters in peace? Same goes with the "For Like Ever". In fact, I think I'll order one right now...
mjr I have to agree! If people like the keep calm and for like ever than so what! I like them both, so what if other people don’t - than you don’t have to put it in your house!
Also I would have to say why is it that people give criticism on this site do they not give any suggestions to fix what they think is wrong, like click212 you do not like the leather chairs with the rest of the area so instead of just criticizing it how about a suggestion on how to make the area not so cold.
Sheesh--I posted the first (or one of the first) comment about the Keep Calm poster. I was joking about its placement over the bed, not criticizing the poster itself.
I still think it's a quirky (kinky? ;-) ) statement in that place. And we're having fun trying to imagine just what it means...
Go ahead and order whatever poster you want. Have a blast.
kiss that pups tummy..I love the red doors too, wow they really make a difference.
i can't help but laugh about keep calm poster comments.
the poster isn't horrible, but really, a picture collage over the bed? kind of dorm-roomy.
otherwise, the house is cute...love the front door area.
kelleyk, my comment wasn't directed at you. As soon as I saw the poster in the tour, my first thought was "How many comments before someone picks on it?", and sure enough... In pretty much every comments section after someone's tour that includes one of the 2 "offending" posters, people start picking on how passe they are and how daft the home owners must be to still have them on display. Do normal people really replace their art every year to keep up with trends?
OK... done :-)
Love, Love the house. Can anyone tell me where I cud find thge steel pipe bed, metal desk and the tufted leather chair and ottoman?
Don't fret about your kitchen (regarding the comment about it's being an embarrassment). I don't think it's bad at all. Mine was far, far worse (circa 1979), and it took me 10 years to get it remodeled! Judging from the rest of your house, your new kitchen will be fabulous when you get around to doing it.
Carry on.
dzignkrazy - the steel pipe bed and the stainless steel desk were pieces that my husband custom made for our house and the leather tufted chair, rocker and ottoman are vintage pieces that my grandparents bought in the 60’s or 70’s and they were handed down to Damien and I.
dzingnkrazy - I should have mentioned in my last post that the desk was custom but my husband did create a coffee table and dining table that you can find for sale on www.jetagefurniture.com
Love the bedside table in the second bedroom! Where is this from?!?
sassyfrassy14:
First of all it would be presumptuous of me to dictate taste to others. I merely said what I saw was true for me. The owners of this home can just ignore me or take a look at what I saw. Taste is a very personal thing and we learn about space and proportion as design elements as we go along and see our own sense of what works as we develop our skills. It is certainly like enhancing your wine taste. I certainly am grateful when someone shows me something I didn't know before. Telling someone what to do is fine perhaps for you. For me it is just pointing out something that might be looked at again. As long as I am not abusive, insulting or shouting out about what to do, I find my tip something they can leave or take.
You have a great day.
This is going to sound odd, but I actually like your kitchen. You wouldn't have to gut it to bring it together with the rest of your style. You could probably just paint the cabinet doors. I like the knobs in the centers of the doors (though I can see how some would not) and the pattern on the backs of the cabinets.
I could see how maybe another pop of that blue on the accent pillow would make the room with the leather chairs seem more complete.
I did not even think of the dirty joke - dirty, dirty minds!! :)that goes along with putting the Keep Calm and Carry On poster over the bed until it was mentioned in these comments… I was just trying to fill that wall with frames and art I already had, that wall is huge (like 23 or 24 feet)! And I thought of it more in the context as of emptying your mind for sleep, as commented by rosenatti.
In some ways, this is a great house. But I couldn't help but be struck by the number of design cliches. Yes, of course, there's the Keep Calm and Carry On poster -- that didn't get by many! And of course, there are the double ginormous sinks in both bathrooms. One apparently can't be a guest in that house without dragging along another guest to use the other sink. Hey, you didn't sneak by me your little trio of white Jonathan Adler vases! And of course, the Jonathan Adler greyhounds.
Why, God, why? There are inventive talented American ceramicists going back to the turn of the 20th Century -- why must we worship at the altar of Mr. Adler when there are so many deserving others?
Congratulations on that beautiful door.
Think long and hard before you renovate the kitchen. If you end up with ebony cabinets, granite tops, stainless steel appliances, and backsplashes tiled with small blue tiles, I'll be heart-broken. And check out some more ceramicists. Here's a name to try: Gambone. Yes, he's dead, but his work lives on -- and is so subtle and beautiful we should try to get some here!
Beautiful transformation. I can't wait to see what you do with your kitchen! The Bathrooms are incredible :-).
Oooo! I just went back to read about the animal heads...aren't you clever!!!
great bath!
I looooove their house specially the front door..!
can you tell me which ebay vendors you purchased your glass tile from? thanks!
The fact that one can brand-name practically every item of furniture/decor sucks a bit of soul out of a house a bit, don't you think?
Very tasteful and well done. I would love to know the artist that created those stunning mounted heads! Let us know!
Hi Kate, Well done on a great remodel. I'd love to know more details about your bathtub. I'm shopping for one today! Do you mind sharing the info? Thanks! - Tubless in Taos.
