Living Room to Kitchen Area
Floors and walls done. Continuing our tour of this quick renovation (see before here), over the holiday the walls were painted by Mark Chamberlain and the floors were done by Vincent Devaney. In the past few days, furniture has started to arrive...

Shaw's Original Fir...
where is the sideboard in the kitchen from? i need to pick something up like that for when i move.
ikea was someting similar, but it has drawers and i think the drawers will interfer with my thought of using it more as a narrow dinner table/extra counter space.
Rug sources?
I love the rugs and the darker color on the floors!
Is that new flooring material, or did you re-stain them, or what? How much of PIA is that to do?
it already looks warm and cozy!
Jamie, if you're wondering about the butcherblock island in the kitchen, that's the Groland from IKEA:

Oh, I love dark floors.
Did you just repaint the walls white? Those pics are kinda dark....
That's definetly the GR's air purifier, but does Ursula like trains? I thought that was a little boy thing.
Matilda,
They could also they have the purifier because they just did the floors and walls, (two things that create noxious fumes) and still have to work fast. They don't have time to leave the space open to air out.
girls like trains...
...looks more and more like the G-Rs at home...
(art, you were right about the island)
he, he, he...they have the same teapot too!
coincidence? i think not!
congrats on the new digs :)
sometimes you readers are kinda creepy
Martybird - creepy we are.
Those plates are the same as in the Thanksgiving pics.
you say creepy. i say observant.
either way, excited to watch the house transform into a home :)
yeah, I think it's their new apt too. maybe in the same building? seems sorta familiar.
... unless maxwell is decorating a home in a style rather similar to his own, in a building he currently lives in
yowza! you're right monika1!
Next, let's watch the orchestrated renovation of the kitchen cabinets and appliances. It will be a piece of cake.
I'm not sold on the cabinet change-out yet because it is a rental and maybe there needs to be some further discussion. On the other hand, if this rental just recently became available, like many do in NYC, even a small kitchen design and build-out will take anywhere from 6-12 weeks or more. If anything, we may see appliances before cabinets.
I'll stay tuned....
Great Picasso not only paints.....Photography is apparently a passion too.
yes, please tell us about the rugs! i'm loving the white one in the bedroom and am thinking it would be perfect for under my new bed.
oh man this looks awesome. and YES that rug in the bedroom is FANTASTIC!
am I missing something? it's a white rug.
Gretchen, perhaps a case of The Emperor's New Rugs? I thought the same thing - nice though.
How do I get Maxwell to design my rental Jr4!!??
I love the white rug too. It's remarkably similar to the one I just put down in my living room! (mine was only $200 - I'm such a great bargain shopper... and not shy about tooting my own horn!!)
Also... yes. Girls like trains. I've often said that the only reason I'm glad I had a brother is because otherwise I wouldn't have had any cars, trucks and trains to play with!!
sweet pad!

I can't wait to see what you guys do! Awesome idea and project!
I feel like it is their new place! But I want the story of why they moved...after spending so much on the old place...seems like more space is not enough reason. Do tell!
Long story--look up the "Nine Month Cure" and also read the many comments.
This is such a wonderful post, wish the photography were better! Maxwell, I am sure among all your contacts you can find a better photographer! This certainly deserves better presentation.
Love the freestanding kitchen island. Can't wait to see how the apartment evolves.
So, the walls were left white/beige?!
How about some color!
But Nine Month Cure discussion wouldn't explain a move to a fresh rental now -- the whole idea was to stay put until they were ready to BUY a larger space that lent itself to extensive reworking.
I can see how combining a toddler and the NYC real estate market might result in some interim larger-rental plans, though...
At no point in this thread has Maxwell implied or confirmed that this it his family's apartment only that it is one that he is prepping for a client. I think some of you are jumping to conclusions.
I guess they can't admit they're moving, because then they would lose their rent stabilized original apartment, which they said they would never let go. If this is true, I think it's really selfish (and thought so when the intention was originally posted) to hold on to a rent stabilized place that is obviously not necessary.
I think the new place is great and hope that you can live happily there, but hope you realize there are people that need a rent stabilized flat to live in, not just as a luxury extra.
Oh, and I really I hope I'm wrong about this.....
Anyone recognize the orange rug? I like the way it seems to fade to a lighter color in the middle. I want one like it in green.
I hope you're wrong about that too, Sasha_!
Not that I'm not fascinated too, but we're getting WAY ahead of ourselves to be criticizing the G-Rs for what we imagine might be their motivation for renting what we hypothesize may be their new apartment while we presume they are keeping their other apartment rent-stabilized. Looooots of unknowns in there.
Can someone tell me what is the color of the entry door and surrounding wall?
Speculators regarding true ownership of the apartment, the man says he's working for a client, are you calling him a liar?
We live in a world that just loves to besmirch characters.
Give it a rest and happy hols!
fjdisalvo--
Um, pay him.
It's what he does for a living.
Whoever's apt. that is, the floors are gorgeous. I hope there are plans for more details on what was done, colors, etc...
the rug, @Jon_B
I think that rug with the faded middle look is from the Rug Company and that AT:NY posted about it here within the past month or two. I remember because after that post I spent the day browsing through the Rug Company website, daydreaming.
i like the idea of seeing this all come together
Not to be to sleuthy/creepy...but there is one item in photos which makes me 98% sure that this will be the G-R's new home. There is a second item - but it's a little fuzzy - that might also be a good indicator.
Good times ahead as the space comes together!
That would be "TOO" sleuthy.
And now, I'm about 99.5% sure.
"Martybird," sometimes the readers are VERY creepy.
With that said, I'd have to say that I much prefer the original floors to the new floors. I usually like dark floors but not in this apartment. With the original floors, the apt looked so light and fresh.
I don't understand why people put rugs under beds.
and who did the Picasso-esque photography? Cut it out!
Thanks Maddy!
I quite like the photos.
I like that LR rug very much.
It's fun to watch this quick transformation, regardless of who is going to be living there.
I am so happy for this family of three to have such a bright, beautiful new home to be happy in!!!
I would be interested to know the paint colors here . . .
