Here’s a roundup of some of the amazing furry friends that have graced the bedrooms of our readers' homes over the past few years. Small or large, dog or cat – there’s no denying the special warmth a pet adds to the tour. (Often, pets generate at least as many comments as their owner’s décor choices!)

My dog Dots has pretty much claimed our guest bed ever since we finished it. I think she likes it because the room is right off the living room, so she's still near us.
No, just no. I do not like pets in the bedroom.
my cat loves my bed. especially sleeping on top of me in bed! people who don't allow pets in the bedroom must not have cats! there is absolutely no stopping them!!
Ohhhh I am the cat police! I usually close my bedroom door and when I don't, I send my kittie running with a clap of my hands any time he tries to get in, lol. Sometimes he gets away with a little snooze in a corner, or I let him get on the bed and say hi for a minute - say on a lazy Sunday morning - but that's *it*.
I'd freak out to find my pet lounging on my bed like these photos BUT I really enjoyed them. So cute and appropriate for a Friday.
Sometimes it seems that my three cats allow ME to share the bed with THEM. I agree with xtinab -- sometimes there's no stopping them! However, I do declare cat-free nights sometimes to get a really night's sleep.
Of all the decisions that go into making the yay or nay decision about pets on the bed (I'm a yayer), the most important one for me is the comforting feeling of having that warm little body lay next to me. I often wake in the night and lay my hand on his side and fall back asleep reassured.
Then he wakes me back up at 5am by batting my face cus he's hungry. =/
BTW AT, thanks for what's one of my favorite posts EVER!
LOL at the last pic, that lil doggy is soo cute!!
pets in the bedroom..... some ppl do it, most do not... to each their own!!!
No bunnies? Well, I guess I'll have to clean up and submit for a house tour ;)
Pets are cute but I'd never have them in my house. They are still animals..and animals stay outside except my husband.
My favorite roundup EVER.
It's Carmen's world. I'm just lucky to be living in it.

I love sharing a bed w/ my cat!
I LOVE THIS ROUND UP! My bedroom isn't nearly as fashionable sadly. But my cats are just as cute! Love when you guys feature kitties! yaya! THANK YOU!
Indoor cat, yes. Dog who's been walking the streets, sniffing other dog's poo, and worse - can't do it. Seems too germy. BTW, I was amused by seeing so many animals coordinating nicely with the bedrooms' color schemes. (But reminded hearing the horrible story of a woman who left her cat at a shelter because it clashed with her color scheme, and then asked to see the other animals that were available. Fortunately, she was refused.)
I'm such a sucker for snuggling! My dog, Gagne, not only sleeps with me...but he gets under the covers and lays his head on my pillow! I wouldn't have it any other way :)
I used to let my cats sleep with me, and then I started finding the tiny gravel of litter, I assumed that was caught in their paws. After that, it was over. Sure, they can hang out with me while I watch TV, read, etc. But, when it's time for some ZZZZ catching, out they go. Besides, they are complete bed hogs.
I don't sleep as well if I don't have my cat at the foot of the bed. When my last cat had cancer, he had a little bed at the foot of my bed and I'd carry him there every night because he was too sick to jump up. Not too sick to make biscuits on the blanket though! He had his little spot so fur and litter wasn't a problem. My new cat has basically taken over the entire space though. Sometimes she sleeps on top the covers between me and my boyfriend, and we're both ok with it.
I love pets in bedrooms. Especially small pets like the adorable little dog in this bedroom http://bit.ly/fKMASv
My (current) cat is shy... usually, she cuddles from a distance. The one thing she does do though, is hop on the bed every night in order to signal that it is time for bed; always on the same corner (where my feet would be if they were under the covers). She leaves sometimes during the night, and usually tries to encourage us to wake up in the morning (in case the alarm doesn't go off). She is utterly charming, and very, very pretty -- and apart from her pale pink nose and pale blue eyes is snowy white and so coordinates perfectly with our bed linens.
(She has never, ever, ever tracked litter anywhere! But then, we use those big absorbing crystals.)
I love a good cuddle with "my puppy"!*
He is only allowed on the bed when we put an extra sheet over the bed to collect dog hair and dirt. So that happens about once a week-otherwise he is fenced off from the bedroom! When he gets in though, I still have to ban him from my pillow... he would sleep perpendicular to me and with his butt in my face if he had it his way!
@meghanbartley Gagne... like the baseball pitcher? :)
*my puppy=my boyfriend's 6 y.o. dog.
I can't sleep if my cat Chester isn't draped over my legs. It's weird but comforting.
The cats don't normally all get on the bed together, but once I caught them in the act. A Christmas miracle!
Back to the post, we allow cats in the bedroom - which is why we have a duvet cover on the bed and make sure the bed is made at all times. Wash the linens and everything's good!
My dog is in bed with me every night, and she's not a little dog either but a 65 lb golden retriever. She always starts out sleeping curled up at the bottom on her side of the bed but come morning time shes up by me with her head on the other pillow, staring at me, waiting for me to get up. I can't imagine not allowing her in bed. I think it's the difference of people who view pets as furry children versus animals.
I let my cat sleep on the bed. But he has to be on his specific plushy blankie (which he loves). Makes cleaning easier, all I have to do is wash the blankie with the sheets. I don't know a whole lot about cats, but he seems to really like sleeping and eating "with the pack." He will also eat breakfast and dinner with me at his bowl while I am eating at the table. I find it completely awesome.
My cats would cry, cry, cry if I locked them out but I only let them on the top of quilt, never on the sheets or pillows.
Tho' temperature seems to be the deciding factor: if it's cold they sleep with me, if it's hot, somewhere else. They only love me for my body heat (and limitless supply of food).
I love the differing quality of the expressions on the animals.
Dogs: "I get to be on the bed? Really? Thank you."
Cats: "Leave me alone. You are disturbing my nap. Get your own bed."
I've never understood the passionate aversion some people have toward lettings pets sleep in the bed. Granted, if you have a large dog, you could face a territorial issue if another person tries to sleep in the bed with you, but I have a 9 pound dog who was bred to be a human's lap dog. I would never ban her to a crate or a dog bed at night, and in terms of cleanliness, plenty of people allow their diaper-wearing or (worse yet) bed wetting children sleep in their beds, so I don't see how a dog who rarely goes outside (and gets regular baths) is any dirtier.
There was a time I would allow my two dogs to sleep on my bed. Now, they must be dreaming on a cloud up in the heaven of dogs.
Enjoy while you have them. :))
according to my husband, cats aren't allowed in the bedroom. but i always catch him sneaking in 'his favorite' kitty before i leave for work to snuggle with him.
for the most part, our cats are great and i let them on the bed.
but around 6am, they start racing each other throughout our apartment. i got so tired of it that i now lock them in the living room and i close the french doors so they can't get in.
once i got scratched from their mad dash race, so that was it for me.
When I first adopted my dog I let her sleep on my bed, but I soon found out that when she sleeps with me I get woken up an awful lot. I have a large pet cage (in my bedroom) that has her dog bed and a couple of soft blankets and she sleeps in there with the cage closed since I don't want her roaming at night due to the occasional "accident". I don't typically let her in my bed because I like at least one place in the house to be free of dog hair!
I'm with peggybell and Barb in CT. I have 6 cats. One has her own room, she gets picked on alot by the others and is diabetic - must watch intake and output very carefully. The other 5 have favorite spots at bedtime, 3 of which are on top of me, the other two are near. My oldest purrs me to sleep when I'm sick with migraine. Wouldn't have it any other way, and my "not a cat person" boyfriend has stolen the hearts of two of them.
@cavedweller, I don't see how being bred for a lap = being bred for a human's bed. I also don't think there's anything cruel or unusual with pets having their own bed, or dogs their own crate (open or closed).
I don't think most people are against animals in their beds due to bedwetting (and for the human kind, there are diapers, pull-ups, and pee pads I beleive). But personally, it's the pet hair that is a big no, that and being able to sleep with minimal disruption. And it's a sad dog that rarely gets to go outside... And dogs shouldn't be bathed nearly as often as humans are, isn't it bad for their fur and skin?
I thought I'd never have a dog in the bed but my dog is my companion. He's always there for me and has been there for me when I otherwise would have been utterly alone. I keep him well groomed and he stays in the bed. Halfway through the night he tends to hop down because he doesn't want to deal with my feet. He's no more germy than anything else in my environment and does not shed much. Now if I had a human to take up space in that bed, then uh uh.
I love number 4 - looks like my cat Jynx. And yes, he sleeps on my bed. The rule I try to enforce is keeping him off the sheets, which is a good incentive to make the bed every morning.
I <3 this post. It made me smile! Something about pets on the bed is just so cute (sorry non-animal lovers/non-bed sharing pet owners). Plus subtly this was design related, as I viewed each photo for general inspiration.
Well done AT.
Aw, thanks JynxnJez- #4 is our kitty Zoe. She insists on sleeping inbetween us, under the covers. She's a total brat, but lovable.
I'm with ladybug 5- my dog has a crate with soft blankets that is closed so he can't get out for the occassional "accident". Which has happened in the past- in my bedroom, on the stairs, and I have CARPET. As a pretty clean person, the occassional mess a pet can make is something I've never made peace with. Keeping him contained in a space that is his while I'm in my own space really helps keep my sanity. Besides, the only person I'm trying to cuddle with is my human fiancee. A night with the bed to myself (in the rare time he's away) is something I don't pass up on, either!
Pets are like kids. Everyone thinks theirs is the cutest.

xtinab, you are so right. If anyone wants to sleep in my house, then the cat sleeps in the bedroom.
But what is my cat doing in Kat and Jon's house? (Mine is identical down to the ruffly fur and white dot on her nose.)
Look at all the cute little faces. And most of them are sleepy. There is nothing cuter than a sleepy puppy or kitty.
I'm biased towards cats of course, but when i see these pictures, cat-on-bed says "calm, inviting and restful", dog-on-bed says "about to erupt."
My kitty used to sleep in my bed, but my partner is very, very allergic. No more kitty cuddles in bed. I miss it, but the bf's health comes first!
Our pets are always welcome in the bedroom! Even our bird loves to come in and climb up the bed. The only pets that don't get in on the action are our fish, but of course, I think they would if they could! ;)
Our cat matches our bedding well (given it's white, any cat would, but as Widmerpool is black it looks stunning). Luckily, he likes sleeping on the grey/brown dirt patch that someone has embedded into the doona fabric at my feet - it is about cat size, for some reason...
Dr Heliotrope is allergic but extra soppy, so he just sniffs all night rather than upset the cat.
My cat doesn't sleep in my room simply because he'd annoy the crap out of me and probably climb a bookcase and knock something over.
When my dog, who previously slept outside, got old and a little decrepit (♥), he slept in a chair in the corner of my bedroom or on the floor, and didn't ever try to get on the bed. That was fine.
I wouldn't mind a pet on my bed for cleanliness reasons (listen, if my pet has germs, guaranteed I already have them), I just think they would irritate me and I wanna sleep!
Nope. I do not want cat butthole rubbing on my pillows/linens.
We sewed our own duvet cover using Crypton fabric. The dog hair can be easily vacuumed off and spots can be spot treated, but it still can be laundered. The perfect fix for a dog that won't stay off the bed (we live in a studio so we can't exactly shut the door to keep him out of the bedroom).
Kitters goes where she wants, when she wants. Period.
We just got our first puppy and Ive been pretty staunch about her sleeping in her own bed but I love waking up in the morning and bringing in her for cuddles!
Was very firm with my lab when he was a puppy. He slept next to, not on the bed, while the cats went wherever they pleased. Now that I've had him two years, he's totally won me over. Cat sleeps on one side, dog on the other. Very cozy. Well worth the trouble of changing the bed linens more frequently.
There is absolutely nothing like having a kitty on the bed. That is when all is right with the world.
I once saw a brochure for a home-boarding place which said that if your dog was used to sleeping in your bed at home, then it could sleep in their bed whilst being boarded!!! No, no, no!
My dog is banned from upstairs totally, and definitely from the guest room. I would never make my guests sleep in a pet-hair/germ covered bed. No way.
I'm shopping around for little steps to make it easier for my cat to get on the bed as she gets older and less agile. I'm just hoping she's can figure them out. I love her, but she's not the brightest bulb on the tree.
