Q: I have this hand-me-down coffee table. It's good wood, but what can I do to make it match with my more modern looking living room? Should I replace the handle?

Editor: Sandra, try giving it a bright coat of paint, like how this hutch was transformed.
Other suggestions?

The design of it is really nice, but the stain is really dark. Maybe lighten it up - and yeah, new handles would be good.
1) Antique it!. Try gold leafing the legs and the rim above the drawers
2) paint it black and in the top decoupage pictures preferably Black and white of you and your family and then place a sheet of glass to protect the photos. If you have sepia pics then paint it brown
3) You can paint just the legs and the rim above the drawers black .
I like all three suggestions by iDesign. I'd recommend not getting "modern" hardware for it - but say if you go with black paint, get something in silver that's still rustic, handmade-looking - Eleek has some interesting ones: http://www.eleekinc.com/wordpress/hardware/
Take inspiration from this Ikea makeover that appeared today on this blog.
The lines are clean, so a modern update is easy. I would paint it, replace the hardware with something sleek, and top it with fabric and a custom-cut sheet of tempered glass. Add casters to make it more versatile if your space is large.
actually the top of the table is more difficult to upgrade the look then anything else. it is a dark brown board...
