Q: This is a question for the resourceful re-purposers at Re-Nest. A friend knit me a beautiful yoga mat bag as a gift, and I didn't have the heart to tell her I haven't done yoga in years, and don't own a yoga mat. The bag is beautiful, but the unique shape makes it impossible to use as a purse or tote bag. I'm having trouble thinking of other ways to use it. Suggestions?

White Enamel Flatwa...
What a nice friend you have. Is that it in the photo? It's beautiful. If I lived in your neighborhood I'd ask to buy it from you! I swear it looks just like a golf club bag, is it strong enough to hold those, I wonder? (And would anyone use it for that?) I also picture bringing it to the gym, and putting the racquetball balls inside. Or using it for storage, perhaps sewing it into something else using the fabric?
What about decorative applications? If it fit your decor, I could imagine finding some sort of container that fit well into it and using the combo as a planter for a house plant. As you mention, the unique shape makes it unwieldy for common uses. If you were an architect it would make a good plan tube after it was reinforced...
Do you have kids? They can use it to transport their artwork.
I would also use it to transport drinks to the park.
A knitted yoga bag would not make a good bag for golf clubs. First off, you carry 14 of them and that would be way too heavy, the knit would stretch out. Secondly, there's no way to keep that upright in a cart or stand them if you carry.
How about a towel holder to take to the beach? Or you could stuff it with batting or newspaper kitty litter and repurpose it into a "draft dodger"? Use it for a Katniss Everdeen costume and put your arrows in it (I jest).
Yay, my question! The one she made is even nicer than the one in the photo; it's a beautiful red color with a big black Om painted on it. I don't think I could reuse the fabric, since it's knitted and would unravel if cut... I like the idea of using it as a drink carrier, though!
Keep up the good ideas, please!
I've knit a yoga mat holder before. So unless she used extremely teeny circular needles (which is not likely), it was most likely knit as a long rectangle and then blanket stitched together to make a tube.
Is there a seam on the backside? If yes, it is probably a blanket stitch. You can remove the blanket stitch without damaging the knit piece and then you will have a flat rectangle.
You could use the rectangle as a throw, pilow front, etc...
pillow*
Hang it in a utility closet and store plastic bags or brown wrapping paper in it.
you could stuff it and make it a bolster pillow.
This may sound crazy, but I would totally hang it in a guest bath for towels (or gasp! tp!)... or stitch up one side w/elastic and use it in the kitchen for reusable (plastic) bags? I see someone just suggest that - so I second it!
Ooooh! Wait - how about stitching up one end (w/elastic or just leave a small hole) and stack rolls of ribbon inside w/the end of each roll sticking out of the end. Then, you have a ribbon dispenser for wrapping gifts, etc.
I don't know how much you use ribbon, but hey - the holidays are coming. :-)
I have a cute one hanging on my front door knob holding my umbrella I always know where it is and it looks funky :)
Yep! I was going to suggest gift wrap organizer/dispenser as well. Or I also really like the idea of turning it into a bolster pillow.
I would use it to store gift wrap, personally. The bolster pillow idea is a good one, though.
And I love the Katniss suggestion. ;-)
Definitely a bolster pillow. Then the knitter will know you appreciated the gift.
I thought about a plastic bag holder or maybe a holder for a camera tripod. It could also be good for rolls paper (like postal or xmas). Or maybe to hold yard sticks.
I, too, was going to suggest bolster pillow! Also, if you have access to an overlocker or Serger, knitted material actually CAN be re-sewn into something else-- very carefully.
is it strong enough to hold a camping chair? Those bags they come in are so ugly, and they're about the same size.
What about a toilet paper roll holder? You could hang it on the wall in your bathroom. You would be using it, which is of course what your friend had hoped for, and it can help you avoid those "on the bowl without a roll" moments LoL
