While taking photos for an upcoming house tour yesterday, we spotted this clever, no-cost idea for jewelry storage.
Ila uses some branches she found in her back yard, tucked in a simple glass vase, to organize and display her jewels. The set-up looks especially pleasing and appropriate against the spring green walls in her bedroom.
We'd love to hear your novel ideas for jewelry storage and display!

Sheex Bedding
i like to use the grundtal spice containers from ikea. the magnetic back makes them perfect for displaying my jewelry on my refrigerator door. this is so tacky that it makes me loose my appetite. since doing this last may, i have lost almost 50 lbs and my fridge looks great! a win-win situation.
I've used multiple ways to display it. Taking inspiration from a domino magazine article, I use coat hangers from Anthropologie for my necklaces. The coral ones are great for hanging multiple necklaces on different sections - great if you like to mix it up a lot. I have 2 of the same earring holders that have extra swirlies for larger earrings. For my rings, I use little bowls.
I really have way too much jewelry....time to give away ones I don't wear anymore :)
Wish I could say I had the type of jewelry I'd need to keep in the bank (or would look tacky displayed) - and I'd guess this is true for most AT readers.
That said, I'm an "out of sight, out of mind" person, so I need my jewelry out where I can see it when I'm putting together an outfit.
Sick of tangled necklaces, I recently took one of those fabric and ribbon bulletin boards (the narrow ones that are about 8" by 24"), stood it on its end on my dresser and put pins in the top. I can hang earrings on the cross ribbons too...works perfectly!
sandblasted manzanita branches are the best looking in my opinion. there's been AT posts on using them in the past.
ladymantle...who is "we"? I never saw the point of buying such expensive jewelry that it has to be housed at the bank. And if it looks tacky sitting out...it's probably tacky on.
I use one of those little ikea trees to hang my necklaces and loop my rings through. But urban outfitters always has lots of choices.
Brilliant! I'm totally stealing this idea.
I've always loved the look of using branches for jewelry but for my earrings I recently bought a metal placemat from Create & Barrel for $15 that is made up of little circles. I spray painted it silver and hung it up on my wall, it's perfect for displaying/organizing all my dangly earrings and it looks pretty cool too!
If anyone wants to try this idea you can find the placemat I used here: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=430&f=34076
The display is lovely, but I wonder about the practicality of accessing a necklace or bracelet at the center of the branch. Does everything from the outer branch have to be removed first?
I bought an old "butgeoli" - a Korean drying/storage rack for calligraphy brushes (like this one: http://www.seohwa.net/ttmall/data/goods/images/2007584818/t_gr11.jpg ) and it works beautifully. Necklaces and rings hang from the pegs, bracelets go over the decorative end pieces, and earrrings on the lower rails. It's a lovely piece of small decorative furniture on its own, but I think it looks just as good and just as displayable even with my jewlery on it.
I need my jewelry "in sight" as well so keep it on a wall in my bathroom. I found my solution at the hardware store. I had a nice piece of oak 1x4 (with interesting detail) cut to fit the space and nailed carpet tacs into it because I liked the shape of the nails. I used a picture frame mount on the back to hang it. It probably cost under $8. I can hang my jewelry organized by color or style. Another added bonus is that the oak goes with the other oak accents from standard rental cabinets in the bathroom making them a little less yuck.
A jewelry box, in the closet, out of sight.
I can see the appeal of an odd necklace thrown casually over a frame but too much and it looks like a 13 year old's room.
I don't know about you, aafilipp, but after reading ladymantle's snobby posts, "humble" is not the word that comes to mind. Ila was displaying colorful, ethnic and costume jewelry, not the crown jewels that ladymantle must have in her safe deposit box.
This might be a bit too 'heavy' but a lighter branch with just a few earrings and light jewelry could be very nice. I've seen ladies do this and paint the branch a glossy white, very elegant.
I keep most of my jewelry stored in plastic bags in order to keep them clean and in good shape.
That said, I also use vintage pyrex mini loaf pans to store bangles on my bureau, and they really brighten things up!
I couldn't find a jewelry armoire that I liked--and was less than $200--so I bought an inexpensive cabinet and stained it. One of these days I'll have the time to finish the project: I bought silver cloth by the yard and am going to make padded drawer liners with it for the cabinet drawers, then hang cup hooks in the larger section for necklaces.
absmith05: I love that metal placemat idea! I might have to try that.
Oh nice! Who needs those fake metal jewelry trees when real branches look much better? I might need to use that for some of my bigger pieces.
Personally, I use a fishing tackle box with clear drawers that I painted more pleasing colors than the flat gray it came in.
I (majestic singular) use an old picture frame and an antique window frame with wire mesh (like a screen door) stapled to the back. I use little bent nails to hang my necklaces, and the earrings just hook right on. It looks totally gorgeous in my bedroom. I make jewelry, so it's art to me.
Here's a lovely one with lace from Etsy:

I love the picture frame idea as well as the branches (I'd probably paint the branches though and only put my favorite jewelry on it so it doesn't look too cluttered.) The lace looks really great but I'd be afraid of ripping it, the wire mesh would hold up better.
A jewelry display is fine if you own costume jewelry. Mine is either on me or in my safe. I'm not about to invite theft by having a jewelry box that shouts "steal me" LOL. FWIW, there's nothing tacky about keeping diamonds in a safe.
We totally agree with ladymantle.
Saw a nice dreamcatcher a few days ago. Wonder how it would work to hang earrings...hmmmm!
as a fellow funky jewelry collector, i love the use of branches. it is not tacky, but fun. and a great way to display what you love.
I love the use of the royal "we" in some of these posts.
It's ok to display funky jewelry, but I keep my mother's pearls and a few other pieces hidden away. Why invite trouble or misunderstanding when your BFF brings over a new boyfriend?
My jewelry is only displayed when I wear it. When it's not, it's back in it's home in the jewelry box.
I own very little of any value, and am an obsessive costume jewelry collector so I have basically dedicated a corner of my room to the jewelry shrine. I have an old beat up wood shelf on a vanity which displays all my pins and bangles. I hang earrings from the edges of teacups. I have one of those 60's ceramic hands that I use to stack my rings. And I have so many necklaces that the only real space solution was a bunch of nails in the wall. From far it looks like a wall of gold chain.
We think some people missed the humor of Ladymantle's post.
I put removable hooks on the inside of the door of my medicine cabinet to hang necklaces. Earrings go in a cute little box, also tucked in the med cabinet. That way they're out of sight to guests and I have instant access when getting ready in the morning.
I took a $3 ikea picture frame, painted the outside white and the inside light green and stapled soft window screen from the back. It give you a box that can stand on it's own, be hung on a wall, or screw in the original picture stand, and it can tilt back. All the little holes are great for holding earrings.
Costume jewelry is in Ziploc bags in my dresser drawer.
Decent jewelry is in jewelry cases that probably do whisper "steal me."
I'm not telling where I hide the ice.
oh god, storing my jewelry is currently the bane of my existence. i need it to be displayed somewhat or else i never wear it, but i could also really use the room it's taking up on my dresser. right now i have my rings and earrings in a tiny black fabric jewelry with everything else sitting on a black serving tray from target. it works for now but it's a bit of a "messy" look, which sometimes makes my eye twitch. also, nothing i have is valuable so it works now but if i ever get anything worth something i'll have to re-evaluate the situation.
Ah, the royal "we". Personally I (we?) very much enjoyed its satirical tongue-in-cheek use by commenters above!
I'm another who needs to be able to see jewellery to be reminded to wear it, but to be honest I think I'd crack up if it was on full display on a dresser or sideboard, it'd be difficult to keep it looking tidy.
I keep it all in my wardrobe - I've screwed rows of hooks on the inside of the wardrobe doors for necklaces and bracelets, use egg cartons on a shelf for ring storage, and covered a corkboard with fabric for earrings, brooches and corsages. I can see it all at a glance when I'm getting dressed.
(Needless to say, I have very, very little ice ice baby!)
If it's something I wear weekly it's on a bronzed bust that I bought at a Lunares warehouse sale for $15 (Lunares is in San Francisco, holds warehouse sales several times a year).
If it's something I wear only occasionally it's in a little decorative trunk that sits in the closet.
And at Christmas the odd earrings & special pins are on the Christmas tree as ornaments. Costume things I'd never wear but that remind of its original wearer.
I've got so much jewelry!! I have a wall display for necklaces and a beautiful white wooden jewelry box (gift from my husband from Pottery Barn) with fabric compartments and drawers for all of my delicate studs. Best part, the monogramed glass top...so I can see all of my favorite colorful pieces! I love it!
I bought 1" thick canvases (canvasses?) from Michaels or Joann Fabrics, some metallic acrylic paint, adhesive cork, and some quilt pins. Painted the canvases, adhered the cork to the back, and hang my jewelry from the quilt pins. I have one for earrings and one for necklaces, although I may need more. For my "uglier" earrings, I use shallow tealight holders from Ikea and a hammered metal tray from west elm. Nice and basic!
This is about half of my antique pin collection.

I did something similar where I collaged an empty wine bottle with colored tissue paper and modge podge, and stuck a branch in it also! When you feel a little frisky, you can also put some flowers in it an use it as a vase. You can see pictures here! http://cutpasterepeat.blogspot.com/2009/11/jewelry-holder.html
Did I not say, "I love the use of the royal "we"?
We regret if we were mis-understood and offer our sincere apology.
We still keep Mummy's pearls tucked away.
i've got too much "jewellery" to put on branches. also, it's a pain to get to, say, the ninth bangle to the left if you need it.
so the part of it that i have used in the past but still like sits in about a dozen boxes from the hardware store, usually intended for keeping screws and the like. then thousands of bracelets and sunglasses, kept in those trays intended for cutlery. finally, i have a box for currently-in-use jewellery, just a big cardboard box with several shallow compartments, atop my washing machine in the bathroom, where i also do my makeup and stuff. as everybody else said - i have to be able to see it to use it.
and, yes, don't keep your real jewellery in a drawer in the living room. my mom did that and discovered that someone had stolen her platinum bangle she got for a birthday gift. she had never even worn it because it was so precious to her. turned out, several other family members were missing stuff, too, and my uncle's new girlfriend he had met, romantically, in a graveyard, was a cleptomanic. but no one could prove anything.
I used to hang them on nails in the closet. I found a custom-made plastic hanger that has tiny holes drilled for earrings along the top, and hooks added to the bar across the bottom for necklaces.
I keep my antique tribal silver bracelets in a rattan basket on the kitchen counter, so I can pick the one I want to wear. In the summer, I put out another basket with my cheap, colorful summer bracelets. The rest of my sizable collection resides in a Bisley file cabinet, which is perfect for storing jewelry.
My jewelry isn't expensive- and I don't actually have much of it. But large hoop earrings, headbands and long dangly earrings are kept on my three-mirror antique french vanity mirror. The whole set up has developed naturally- one of my headbands that sits on top swung down and so now my hoop earring hang on it, I laced the little cardboard backs my cheap earrings came on onto ribbons and hung them around the two mirror supports and now there they sit.

After I saw Pirates of the Caribbean I dumped all my jewelry onto my tray of shells and coral, to be 'treasure'. Looks great, but I can never find the second earring.
Wow, people, snowed in much?
My daughter displays all of her jewelry and little treasures on a Bauble Board. She chose a butterfly shaped board and it's personalized with her name. It matches her room decor and she takes pride in having her name on something with all of her fun jewelry out where she can see what she has - www.baubleboard.com
Hey! I posted before about a wine bottle and branch display, and realized that a while ago I made a new one out of a bird house!! It's great, everyone should have one! Read more here: http://cutpasterepeat.blogspot.com/2010/03/birdhouse-jewelry-tutorial.html
mine is organized with a pegboard diy project that i found on AT a couple months back. my bedroom is too small to have them displayed in the open, so the pegboard was installed in my closet about 5 feet from the floor (at the bottom of the board).
i've got a cute little stool in my closet that i use to reach some of my pieces that aren't used as often, and stored higher up.
i also use the pegboard to store my curling irons/straightener and my scarves/hats and some smaller purses. there's not a lot of bathroom storage and only 2 closets in our apartment that are fairly awkward in size/shape, so the pegboard has been great.
now i need to hang one in the other closet for the remaining purses (currently stored in vintage suitcases) and some of our unused wall art
I have a TON of earrings. I use old corks and either glue them into a frame, or just nail them to my wall to make a square or rectangle, and my earrings just get pushed into the cork. Love it!
I have a large mirror (previously in my bathroom, now in my bedroom). I stuck a bunch of those suction cup hooks around the perimeter. I hang my necklaces and bracelets on them. For my earrings, I sewed a swatch of tulle onto a coat hanger and hang that on the back of my bathroom closet. The tulle works for posts and hanging earrings.
