We've been thinking about getting rid of our DVD collection all together. The only thing that's holding us back is that we can still imagine ourselves purchasing more. We have a large collection of DVD's &mdash some are in their cases while others are cataloged in a binder. We have them all in one place, out of sight &mdash just how we like it.

If we weren't lucky enough to have such large storage capabilities in our home, we'd be screwed. There would be no way we could hide our large collection and still access it easily. So, we were thinking about how other people store their collections.
Sarah Rae has a really interesting and unique way of stashing her collection &mdash in her kitchen of all places! If the drawers weren't open, you'd have no idea they were filled with movies.
We also like the idea of these IKEA shelves. We have a discontinued piece of IKEA furniture that is currently home to our DVD collection, so we understand the ease and simplicity of choosing that route. This way, your DVDs are tucked away when you're not watching a movie, but they're easily accessible when you're ready.
How do you store your DVD collection?

binder all the way, gets rid of al those cases and is easy to thumb through. I need a second one though and the kind i like was discontinued, kind of sad about that.
We just moved up from a 1-bedroom apartment to a 2-bedroom, so we have a room dedicated as the library/study (I'm tired of the word 'office' for home). All the available walls are going to be covered with book, CD, and DVD shelves.
I love being able to see my movie collection, but I don't want to look at it *all the time*. Now our living room and bedroom can be more uncluttered and relaxing. I've just had a hard time finding tall, shallow (and relatively inexpensive) wall shelves for my collection. I've already gone the binder route for a lot of my DVDs, but I prefer being able to find them quickly on the shelves.
Converted my 1000 DVD collection into .mp4's last year. Sold all the originals on eBay (not for very much I'm sad to say).
The whole collection takes up much less room on one 2TB hard drive :)
im with chirho.....the only downside is that the mp4 quality is a fraction of dvd quality. prepare for blocky artifacts.
Mine are on open shelves. I just don't see the point in hiding them away.
Right now my movie collection is stored in boxes up in the attic - not optimal ..
I plan on getting 3 IKEA Bertby - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00093136 - but I wanna paste the glass with some kind of digital print. Should be easy enough :)
I like displaying mine and I also favor physical media.
Here's mine: http://i40.tinypic.com/1zbt56p.jpg
IKEA Lerberg shelves. I've stripped the paint down (which was a long process) and powdercoated it orange
Lerberg shelves are cheap and versatile, though a pain to hang in my experience. We finally decided to hang them in a wave-like pattern to trick observers into not noticing the slight tilt some of them had. *chuckle*

@ giantrobot:
Those look great! How did you manage to hang so many AND get them to sit so straight and level? Mine were a headache of massive proportions, and we only put up 6 of them.
@ ekmac116:
I used some drywall anchors and a leveler. And carefully measurements... Some of the brackets were off a few millimeters, but I just shaped them back into place with a hammer.
I thought it was nice of me once upon a time to alphabetize our cases (on bookcases), but over a year ago we transferred our videos to a file server (Netgear box and two RAIDs, backed up with its own emergency power backup), and we put the discs into binders, which are in storage. We don't need shelves or any such thing anymore.
It's video on-demand.
We keep most of them in large tough plastic bins. Only the blu-rays are out on a shelf. Everything else we watch - we keep on our NAS.
I store all my DVDs in Ikea Hopen dressers: http://www.bratproductions.com/bratblog/archives/33
I plan on ripping them all to a huge RAID archive (disc images, not mp4), just as soon as I finish the CDs/DATs/Mini DV/everything else. :)
