We've covered different ways to change the look and feel of your current space. From Abby's post on how lighting can enhance the look of your space, Grace's post on changing up the chairs in her space and how even using warm whites, cool whites affect the look of your home. While all of these accents will change the tone of your space within the current look, we want to know how often do you completely change your home decor design style?
For us, it seems about every 5 years. This last round, we were simply inspired by the clean lines of IKEA's Lack series. We used to have more of a shabby chic style with white walls. Fast forward a few years and now we have a mix of modern finds and traditional pieces set against a backdrop of bold colors. Since all of the rooms in our smaller apartment can be viewed from each other, we have carried the basics of this design style throughout our home.
Have you ever done a complete 180 on your own home decor style?
Was their a piece of furniture, a designer or an interior space that truly inspired you to change directions?

I changed mine when I moved out of a place with roommates into my own apartment. Previous roommate had rolled arm couches, dark wood furniture. It was all very pottery barn. When I got my own place I made things a bit more modern with a clean lined white sofa, shades of greys, navy, and lavender and lots of white accents. I am liking it but am also in the process of "softening" it up with vintage & flea market finds.
I never just up and change it - it seems to evolve in a more organic fashion. I don't really like the idea of coming up with a strict idea of a "design style" for my life/home, but instead concentrate on pieces that inspire me and work from there. I find that you if get the items that you respond to it all ends up fitting together and being a better representation of you than if you try too hard.
I'm in the process of changing right now...
...my Living Room and Bedroom have been what my friends call "Austin Powers Modern" - but since I'm in process of transforming the guestroom into cozy den, I'm drawn more towards more ornate/traditional pieces with bright/wild colors - more of a Hollywood Regency style.
The turning point was my search for a Danish Modern Teak Credenza for my hall - and ending up with a Neo-Chinese Elm Burl Credenza as well as a giant C. Jere sailboat wallsculpture from the same seller.
I agree with amt230 wholeheartedly.
I can't peg my 'design style' (I use that term loosely) to one thing. I put what I love into my home. That is my style. No magazine pages here.
i seem to want to change everything as soon as i get the last piece i was looking for! i guess i enjoy the hung. though this time around i have spent more time finding pieces that are just what I am looking for, so hopefully this time i can be satisfied!
For me its a gradual process that evolves over time rather than drastically.
I don't consciously change my design style so much as it evolves. Sometimes I acquire something that is so great I change the room around it. Sometimes it has to do with finally getting around to making a needed upgrade and going from there. I started out with minimalist and moved into more of a cottage/asian fusion. I love Craftsman homes, but I think my Cape Cod is just a bit too small for the busyness of that style.
Like other posters... it's an evolution. I'll never be cubbyholed with any specific design style, nor do I wish to be. I like what I like... and it doesn't matter whether it's "in style" or not. I'm not a fan of mid-century for my home... it's just not comfortable to me. My boyfriend will inherit a houseful of it. We'll keep the few pieces we like, sell the rest, and then find pieces that represent us. He's jonesing for a big dark leather chair and ottoman. I'll probably recover my boring but comfy to Mitchell Gold sofa to pull whatever our "new look" end up being. I never start with a fully formed concept.
My style was slowly evolving into something a little more shabby chic and a little less modern (sort of the opposite of the original post!) when I moved. That gave me the freedom to put the more modern (read ikea) furniture in the shared living area and have a little fun with my bedroom. So the gradual change got a lot more rapid. It's cool cause I've been able to effect a very different style without getting rid of perfectly good furniture, just by selecting what goes in which room and editing accessories and doing a lot of sewing. It's fun.
I think it is hihlarious that this post appeared directly above a post titled: "How To: Get Real About Needless Spending"
Mine completely changed when I finished grad school, sold all my thrift store furniture and moved across the country to start a job. I started from scratch, so it provided the opportunity to reinvent my interior surroundings.
Looking back, I wished I would have moved some of my old furniture.
EDIT: hilarious :-)
Over the summer I started reading AT nearly every day and my style has since been leaning towards Danish Modern. I have started replacing thrift store finds and trash room hand-me-downs with vintage pieces from antique stores. Although I can't part with my transitional sofa, too expensive just to trade in after 3.5 years. Now I have gone lamp-crazy and want to replace all my matching IKEA lamps with vintage ones. But I am holding back trying to get control of my "needless spending".
i used to be into old, almost gothic & bohemian stuff... i thought. that is until i saw the likes of anthropologie. then, i realized it was MOLD that i loved. & after having gone through the a phase of MODERN only, i'm learning how to embrace the OLD.
i changed because i moved from an industrial live work space with a 20 ft ceiling to a very small craftsman house. we also went from being renters to home owners. we thought it would be good to start investing on quality furniture. therefore we ended up selling our hodge podge assortment of furniture (mostly ikea). we have a mix of contemporary and mid century modern pieces which i think work with our craftsman style home.
I decided to do a mixture of warm, country colors with clean lines for bookshelves, sofa, bed, etc. I have a bunch of really homey country touches (homemade vase from street sale, old box purse). The Marek lamp from IKEA is a really cute thing I recently added that combines that warm country color with modern lines. ^_^
I usually change my style about as often as I change roomies, boyfriends, or something of the sort. It just happens that at those points of time I feel like I need a "renewal" and will change out furniture with how I'm feeling.
