Q: A pendant in the corner? A table lamp? I love mod, but have a mod-est budget. My apartment is tiny – 360 sq. ft. Ceilings are 8 ½ feet high. I have one of those huge, 31” round Chinese white paper lanterns over my dining room table, but I would love something distinctive for the living room. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer!

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
On its own it is not distinctive, but perhaps you could buy one of those CB2 pendant lamps and paint some sort of graphic pattern on it.
Hi Angela
I went to the Ikea In Elizabeth N.J. this past weekend and took some pictures of some lamps.

you could try the ikea regolit lamp: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60103854
I have a friend with a similar living room set-up who placed the lamp behind the couch (where yours currently is), and the light hangs down over the coffee table... it's a very cool effect!
How about a couple of floor spots? point them up the walls for a bit of drama? Can usually get them fairly cheap.
Also, where did you get that orange chair! it's fab (sorry, still new to this type of thing, learning fast though).

It would go with the "wave" pattern on your pillows.
I think you're on the right track with that floor lamp, it just needs to be much larger. In a space that small, one big fixture will be best. I'd avoid anything that hangs because it will detract from your art. Good luck!
I'd go with a floor lamp just a different one than you already have : Try

you can't beat the price (14.99)
It's distinct and would compliment your chinese lantern over the dining table
I love your room! Very sharp! I'm curious about the groovy orange chair, too.
I'd lean towards something like this:

I think it fits the style of the room and will stand out against the white walls for a little extra punch, without competing with the rest of the decor.
This one is also cool, and echos the wave pattern on your pillows:

You have great taste, so I'm sure whatever you choose will look terrific!
The spun floor lamp in the place of your existing floor lamp would be nice.
where did you get your coffee table? it's what i've been looking for.
light suggestion:

Very cute. A tripod lamp would be nice if you can fit it in that space. You have squares, circles, waves, and rectangles. Adding subtle diagonal lines wouldn't hurt.
Nice wave lamp!
love how your pieces are so well thought out. my favorite is the cat. anyway, i didn't want to distract nor clutter your space so looked at MOMA and liked their tubed top, white one as my lighting suggestion:

here's another suggestion. i know, a bit pricey but if you can find something similar...

I agree with Kaya--the cb2 lamp would go really well in that corner and add some depth to the room
cb2 does some attractive arc lamps for about $200. Not stupid cheap, but a good value for what you're getting.
no lamp ideas, sorry!
but I do have a question... what is the curved thing with the ledge beneath it? is that a heating element of some kind?
You have some great taste - everyone is asking where you got certain elements in the pic - my Q is where is the cat from? So cute!
agree with the folks above who are urging you to get a bigger, bolder floor lamp. if you like mod, check out ebay, which occasionally offers various types of mid-century modern floor lamps. a pendant would be ok too & i don't think it would interfere with your artwork. we have pendants & chandeliers with lots of artwork & it adds visual drama.
What's wrong with mixing some vintage-mod in with your current pieces?
There are lots of vintage table lamps on eBay...
...and some end tables on either side of your sofa would be nice too.
First off, for all who have asked, I think that orange chair is from IKEA.
As to the OP. The lamp you have is OK, but I agree, too small for the space, need something larger, but for the time being until you get the right replacement, pull it out from the very corner a bit so it CAN work as a reading light in a pinch, as it is, it's too shoved into the corner and too far back of the sofa.
Otherwise, you are indeed on the right track here but do need to think of not only dramatic lighting, but also task/reading light too so a cool, mod/modern table lamp or two would work or a nice floor lamp with a suitable reading light attached would work fantastic and do not underestimate the value of good vintage pieces to fit in with the room.
An example, the Hesso lamp, now only in red/orange and white can be found used in yellow and blue too if I recall, and I think in a smaller size as well. Not so much for reading/task, but for mood lighting as it's not that tall, but creates a nice glow as the light shines through the shade.
Also, think about small, not expensive accent lamps to bring light to say a corner or a spot on a shelf and don't forget to go indirect lighting, that is, bounce light off of the ceiling for a dramatic effect as well and it'll vary the lighting throughout the room.
Otherwise, good job so far and good luck!
"...for all who have asked, I think that orange chair is from IKEA."
Along with nearly everything else in the room.
I almost forgot my question was appearing today!! Thanks for all the great ideas and compliments!
To answer your questions:
bepsf - almost, not every, thing is from Ikea. Sofa, coffee table, lamp, orange chair ($29!!! Tip: if you shop in August, when their catalog is about to come out, anything that is still in the store but NOT in the catalog is practically given away!!). Okay, everything! I also have a dining table, credenza, bookshelf. I furnished the entire place for $1,100.
chokolaj - Cat is a dog toy from Pylones USA.
heatherc - the curved thing is from CB2. It holds 18 votive candles and looks like a fireplace when lit. I placed it on a 48" picture shelf from West Elm.
hunted - I would LOVE those articulated things, but cha ching! I'll give eBay a try.
You guys are the BEST!
Angela
A large turquoise table lamp on and end table at the end of the sofa. Or a large hanging pendant in turquoise.
I have one of these in my house, simple and you cannot beat the price.

LoriSF - perfectly MOD!!!
is it Klubbo coffee table from ikea? did you change the legs?
I'd kind of avoid any more "modern with personality" additions, though. Just go simple, to avoid any "bought it all at one store" feeling. ANd think past your current apartment. Good lighting choises now can serve you well for years to come.
But what kind of light do you need? Task? Ambient? Mood?
In theory, you should have all three...
For task, I'd do a cylindrical-head silver/chrome pharmacy style lamp.
For mood, canned uplights in strategic corners.
You large paper lantern may provide ample ambient. Make sure it's on a dimmer! And that lamps are dimmable or have hi/low settings.
I also like the introduction of halogen in with the incandescents in a lighting plan.
And don't overlook picture lights, even in a very modern interior.
Sorry for the typos.

ElisaB that is great but wow really out of scale for her place..
I mean it will eat everything up.
It's not really cheap, but this would look great.

I'm leaning toward a black lamp.
Here's a ceiling mounted one:

Here's a table lamp:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60148862
I wish they offered a floor lamp with the same shape which I find modern and think would suit your space.
Good luck:)
Thanks again, everyone, for all your help! I've been perusing eBay and visiting all the sites you've recommended. Hopefully I'll be able to show you the results of your great advice soon!
A really big, funky vintage table lamp on an end table if there's room for the table. Maybe a Lack table?
