Hot diggity. We totally want to take this latest Instructables project on to add a little more storage space in our tiny media room. The best part? It's made out of nothing but readily available parts found at your favorite local (well, maybe not so local for some of us) Scandinavian home furniture providers, IKEA.
It's a pretty clever project, we'll have to admit. Using a bunch of IKEA components, including a few STOLMEN and EKBY poles, brackets, shelves, and tube ends, you can easily whip up this freestanding bookshelf over the weekend. We reckon the best part is knowing how sturdy it is since most of the parts seem to utilize the sturdier IKEA accessories available out there. Plus, who doesn't enjoy that sense of accomplishment after a hard day's work?
However, even though it's IKEA parts we're talking here, the total costs will probably run you around $400-$500, depending on how many tools you have laying around. Check out the entire Instructables guide for more details.

What is DIY about that? Go to Ikea, buy the parts (which are conveniently displayed together with instructions on how to put them together, exactly as seen here), go home, follow instructions. It's more do-it than do-it-yourself.
Ditching the Stolmen feet "because they look cheap" doesn't strike me as that brilliant of a hack.

If you'd bothered to read the original Instructables project, you would realize that a lot of planning and hard work went into constructing this bookshelf, matching up bolts, threads, metric / imperial conversions etc. Making for a well informed project. Just sayin :/
