Now I have to admit that I loathe cleaning — and cleaning the bathtub in particular is a chore that has made me seriously consider why we don’t just buy some rubber flip-flops and call it a day. But, eventually I’ll want to take a bath and when faced with the prospect of stewing in all that goo — well, then I remember why it’s such a good idea to just keep up with it in the first place!
So, I have developed an easy tub-cleaning system I hope will help you, too. I realize, of course, that there are many ways to skin scrub a cat, but this is what works for me:
1. Purchase a tub-cleaning-dedicated surface cleaner — or mop with a stiff bristle brush on one side and a soft sponge on the other. I use one designed by Michael Graves for Target called the “2-in-1 Surface cleaner” (in store only), which is triangle-shaped for getting into corners. The handle telescopes, which is also key. Gone are the days of kneeling on hard tile floors while bent double inside of your tub with a scrub brush! With this tool (or a small mop) you can stand comfortably and reach all of the nooks and crannies in your tub and shower. I love this tool so much I actually brought one with me to Paris, which either proves how great it is, or how lazy I am…
2. Use a scrub, not a spray. I am uniquely blessed to have a giant bathtub in my tiny Paris apartment, but so far I have been unable to find any kind of cleaning paste or scrub, which is beyond frustrating. Sprays just don’t cut it—you have to use quite a few trigger pulls to cover your entire tub (and shower if you have one) and liquid cleaning agents just don’t break up the grime the same way a scrub does. I’m a big fan of Method’s Eucalyptus Mint “le Scrub” although any thick paste will do. This one works beautifully and you won’t have to open the window’s to keep from passing out while you’re cleaning (a big plus in the winter!).
3. Rinse If you have a hand shower, rinsing is a breeze, but if you don't simply close the shower curtain and turn on the spray and gently move the shower head from side to side. If you use a natural cleaner you won't have to worry too much if a little scrub is left over on the tub — they won't irritate sensitive skin like most traditional cleaners will.
That's it! Pretty easy, huh? Once you take the backbreaking work out of the equation (the telescoping scrubber is key!) cleaning the tub becomes a much less daunting prospect. I’m not going to lie and say you’ll enjoy it — but you may not dread it as much!
Do you have any tips for keeping the tub clean?

I always scrub my shower after I shower... there is something so re-freshing about showering in a super clean shower.... it is almost an addiction....and I know it. :)
Totally agree with you on cleaning the house before going on a trip. When I get home, the last thing I want to see is a less than spotless home, or get into a bed with not clean sheets. I do a major house clean and put fresh linens in the bathroom and on the bed before I go to the airport. I also do the laundry before I leave; I only want to have to deal with what is in my luggage when I walk through the door.
peroxide and baking soda, scrub off with soft sponge.bam even the dead skin comes off. no chemicals.
If I had a finish left on my tub, your advise would be splendid, but alas I have none. I think I finally figured it out.
1. Kaboom toxic blue to white spray does the trick. Method won't cut it. Hold your breath and go for air frequently.
2. Using an industrial looking plastic scrub brush found in a Jersey City Supermarket is fantastic. It takes tons of elbow grease. I consider it my weekly arm numbing workout. (Remember to change arms midway through for even muscle building). The brushes from Target left blue dye and bristles everywhere.
3. I agree with you completely on the cleaning before leaving. One more reason to relax on vacation.
I always use those "Magic Erasers"/micro-sponges (made by Mr. Clean I think, though I get them from the Asian supermarkets.) You just wet them and scrub. They're amazing for polishing faucets and getting all that hard water build-up and mildew and mung and stains all off with a minimum of chemicals (I hope) and only a little bit of elbow grease.
Magic erasers and baking soda! Peroxide an vinegar help, too.
I clean before going on trips, too. I take the out the trash and run the dishwasher and put everything away. I'm so good that there have been times I've come home and squealed "OHMYGOD, I"VE BEEN ROBBED!" after the clutter of my family's homes. But I love that feeling of clean, clean, clean!
dishwashing liquid detergent. Works like magic on that soap scum.
Vinegar, baking soda, peroxide...
I tend to steer clear of anything that could be harmful... Especially the magic erasers. They work great, but if they can strip paint, they probably aren't that great for me.
I use the Scotch Brite Easy Erasing pads. No idea what's in them but they work great with just water. It seems different than the magic eraser. Works like magic on soap scum!

What Muesli said. I use Dawn, but whatever brand you use is fine.
Think about it -- the scum in a tub is soap (made from grease) and stuff from your body (including oils). So a degreasing dishwashing liquid works wonderfully.
And I love not having to buy and store a plethora of products and tools. I use a sponge with Scotch Brite on one side in my kitchen sink. Once a month it's demoted to bathroom duty and a new one goes in the kitchen. In the meantime, I put the kitchen sponge in the dishwasher when I run it, along with the strainers from the kitchen sink.
I'm square: I use Comet and a Scotch Brite sponge and get down on my knees and scrub.
I keep some dish-washing liquid in a container in the bathroom cupboard and swish round the bath tub with it after each use. It's a breeze. I don't use scrubs on my enameled tub because it takes the shine off and when that goes, soap scum sticks fast.
Wait - Magic Erasers will strip paint??? I'm about to start a "door restoration/replacement" project, and if this is true, it might save me a lot of hassle.
old wool socks, baking soda, dish soap and some Arcade Fire to dance to!
socks on
squirt
dust
use body weight to scrub it down
(great for soft feet, too.)
1. You're not alone, my husband thinks I'm crazy because I go crazy cleaning before we go on any trips.
2. Regardless of the cleaning tools/products used if I don't have music I can dance too, it won't be cleaned nearly as well.
Magic erasers won't strip paint. (Um, sorry, or not, depending on your view.) They're made of melamine foam, which disintegrates as you use it, but other than that, does not leave a chemical residue. Although I have read that you can give yourself an impressive friction burn (like a carpet burn) if you scrub yourself with one, there's no chemicals to breathe in or get on your skin afterward.
Muesli, Mdorothy and I are on the same page. I have hard water that leaves blue-tinted soap scum, but a gentle scrub with Dawn gets rid of it without much effort.
Speaking of cleaning....AT can you stop the ads coming in, ok had to get that out
Anyway, I always clean before I leave on a trip, it does feel good coming home to a clean house.
I have one question, I live in an apt. and my tub surround is one of those god-awful plastic or whatever you call it, and is a nightmare to clean. It is beige, so when I use anything with bleach in a spray, I get lines. Any suggestions?
I've always used baking soda and elbow grease! Never thought to use liquid kitchen soap - but I'm trying that this weekend when I clean the bathroom.
I always clean before a trip. But then our in-laws stay at our house while we're gone (to pet sit) and then I still have to clean when I get home. Oh well - free pet sitting!
I use Bon Ami. I love it! Coming back to a clean house help me appreciate the comforts of home.
I can't use harsh chemicals due to migraines. After years of searching for something that worked it clicked. Soap scum + body oils?! They didn't I think of this before?! I grabbed the dishsoap and my hand brush. 10 mins later I had a squeaky clean bathtub. It's non-toxic, not malodorous, and rinses squeaky clean with my shower sprayer. LOVE
Yes! Other people who clean before vacations too. I am not alone in my madness.
I'm seconding scrubs. I recently switched to a scrub after months of being lazy and using dishsoap and i actually find that it works a lot better and rinses better too.
i imagine that with a bathroom like that someone else does the cleaning...
The only thing I'd add to the suggestions above is a trick I learned a while back -- once the shower or tub is really nice and clean, apply a automotive sealer (I used something I think is called "Lightning" from Armorall, I believe.) This causes water to bead up and repel, so for quite a while, things stay shiny! (I squeegee the shower after each use, so it lasts even longer. For the tub, I sometimes remember to use the bath towel, after I dry myself off, to dry off the tub as well. The less you let evaporate, the less crud builds up.
I like to use oven cleaner and my hand-held steamer (SteamFast)
I have amid century pink bathtub (and hard water). Pink looks its best when it's shiny so I use Norwex scrub and microfiber cloths and after it's dry wipe and buff out with baby oil.
I live in Burbank, CA, which has it's own water department and delivers the hardest water to our home that I've ever seen. Ever. It has taken me some time to figure out how to deal with the stains and soap scum. Here are my faves:
HARD WATER -- Simple Green Lime Scale Remover. Hands-down the BEST. Takes care of hard water residue, soap scum, the works, with very little scrubbing. I have glass doors on my shower and this stuff makes them sparkle. This product is safe for fixtures, too.
SOAP SCUM -- For in between heavy duty tub scrub sessions, dandruff shampoo, "clarifying" shampoos, or dishwashing liquid (mentioned already) are the best in breaking down soap scum, which is simply soap and skin stuck to your tub. Ew.
TELESCOPING SCRUB BRUSH -- Just a word of agreement that this Target item rocks HARD. Best $10 I've ever spent for cleaning.
SMELLY STUFF -- Method Eucalyptus Mint cleaners. Not necessarily the strongest, but by far the best "clean bathroom" scent around. The toilet cleaner is wonderful.
@Trish1980 - So glad to know I'm not the only one! I always save the shower for last, then clean it while taking a shower. Sooo much easier when you don't have to worry about getting soaked :)
Ran out and got the Oxo extendable scrubber yesterday, but it doesn't work well for me: the sponge keeps swivelling off course and the handle hits the tub. I have blue and gray marks in my tub now.
