Though it seems like her engineer husband did most of the handy work, Dana's how-to from House Tweaking for a new sliding barn door in her bedroom looks like it was an easy install. I especially love the product they found - a flat track, by Crown Industrial. The weight of the product seems to suggest an expensive shipping cost, but you can’t argue with the look of the finished product (not to mention the luxury of having the track cut precisely to your needs). Though I don’t think I’ll be constructing my own door out of salvaged pieces from my family’s country farm fence, I like the idea of using a reclaimed door, or maybe even upholstering my existing door, to hang on a sliding track.
To gather some useful tips on hanging a sliding door, head over to House Tweaking for Dana’s two part post (complete with her husband's detailed illustrations) on how she created this chic and useful feature in her bedroom.
Thanks, Dana!

White Enamel Four-P...
I am saving this for future use. My house has a couple door-to-door corners that can create traffic jams. I've been playing around with the idea of making custom sliding doors and this looks very helpful!
Nicely done! I'm mustering up the courage to do this myself. I'll have to see if the company has options for other tracks that don't require as much space over the door header. I have very low ceilings in my upper half-story bedroom.
On a side note, where did you get your sisal rug? How is it? Thanks!
I love that! Great colors in the bedroom and door.
I'm probably going to do this with my small bathroom. I would like a sleek flat bar curved shower rod, but can't have one because the door swings inward and would hit any type of curved shower rod. And, no, pocket doors are not an option. I've already checked.
@designstein, I don't know about the one in the picture, but IKEA has this one, that looks very similar and is surprisingly soft underfoot.

Beautiful!
i clicked on the blog to see a picture of the headboard and found a tutorial for it :D
if anyone is curious:

LOVE. THIS. And in a gorgeous yellow!
@ designstein - The rug is actually jute....and very soft. It's only a few months old and still in the shedding phase but not bad shedding. I like the texture it adds to the room, not to mention how it helps disguise the builder carpet in the room.
I purchased the 8' x 10' rug from Overstock.com. In total it was less than $250, taxes and shipping included. Hope that helps!
love this! Renovated my master bath 2 years ago, and replaced the door that swung into the toilet(and could not swing into the bedroom) with a bifold door that is utilitarian, but has no pizazz...this is exactly what i am looking for!!
thank...bookmarking this!
Love this soooo much ;) Gorgeous!
I love the colors in this room. Would love to know more about the grey and white bedding, and pillows, as well.
I'm curious, how well do these types of doors block sounds, smells and drafts. It would seem to me that the answer would be, "not very well," but I have no experience with them. Anyone have actual experience with them?
Love this pic! It is the inspiration for my newly painted bedroom. Yellow is my favorite color and gray is a new favorite so it was a yummy combination.
IN LOVE WITH THIS!
Just curious to know what it looks like from the other side (when closed)? Also, do you have any hardware on the other side for opening/closing? I imagine that could get complicated due to how flush the door is to the wall when it is opened..
ATROCIOUS color!
Sometimes I wish I was an engineer!
We've been considering a barn door for our bathroom (it's small, and the door really cuts into the space). But our architect friend said they don't afford much privacy, if you know what I mean. Curious to hear from anyone who has used this door for their bathroom.
@mjr and housetweaking - thanks for your responses. I'm going to check out the Ikea one this weekend. Maybe Pottery Barn and West Elm, too. And yes, I sound like Will Ferrell in "Old School." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiPb50D9G1w
Very cute, but we have these at work and the sound travels straight through. I don't think it'd work well for a bedroom, unless you (and your significant other) live alone.
Really like these for sliding doors: http://www.krownlab.com/door-hardware.html
@housetweaking hi, I was wondering - does the door swing towards you when you slide it? The issue I've noticed with sliding doors people install in their homes is that the door isn't secure and tends to be easily pulled towards you when you grab the handle to slide to and fro. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense I hope you know what I mean! Thank you!
We have thought about one of these for our bathroom, jennfo, as it is also very small with no space for a swing in door, but due to issues of quiet and privacy I think we are going with a pocket door. It seems to fit the requirements of the room better.
Hi, Tabitha!
Handy Hubby here. To answer your question, no the door does not pull out away from the wall. With 2 young, destructive boys we wanted to make sure that the door couldn't come off the track or bang against the wall. There's a guide mounted on the floor and a corresponding channel on the door where it rides. See the tutorials for more details. Hope that helps!
I have an oversized mirror that this will work for perfectly!
