Pin-tuck bedding and pillows are a simple but chic way to add texture to even the plainest bedroom. Though several retailers offer some version of this popular style, the prices and colors may not fit your budget or style, plus we're heard mixed reviews about the longevity of the tucks in the store-bought options. If you want to make your own low cost custom pin-tuck duvet, read on...
Talented DIYer Trissta, from Living on the Chic, made two of her own pin-tuck duvets — the first navy, the second white. Based on her experiences the first time around (hand tied pin-tucks the were both time-consuming and more likely to come out), Trissta updated her instructions to incorporate machine sewing the tucks. She explains how to vary the tucks depending on how fluffy you want the end result to be, giving instructions that are simple enough for even a novice seamstress to follow.
Trissta created her custom duvet in 2 hours and for only $12, a remarkable result for a small investment! For step by step instructions with photos, check out Trissta's blog post Living on the Chic: DIY Pin-Tucked Duvet Cover.

This came out beautiful!
I have a pin-tuck duvet from west elm that I LOVE but it was really pricey for cotton and every time I pull the covers up too hard or fast I can hear the stitches tearing the fabric...
It seems to be holding up just fine but if it ever does end up ripping I might just have to try this instead of replacing it!
I did this, but used elastic thread in the bobbin so the tucks wouldn't rip out. I was totally pleased with the results.
What size flat sheets would you need for a queen sized bed? Queen? Or should I go up to King to make sure the duvet fits? Suggestions?
Is this really a new bedding trend? It reminds me of wedding dresses from 2003.
Fun! I always wondered how that was done, even if I never actually do it!
Technically, these are not pin tucks. Pin tucks are traditionally tiny vertical stitched-in pleats that are only a "pin"'s width in measurement.
