Q: My family has been living in our home for over 8 years and there isn’t a single decoration. First of all the window doesn’t open so there is no ventilation, there is no towel rack, the sink and toilet are both ugly and there is no baseboard and there is no place to keep the toilet paper. I'm 19 and don’t want to ask my parents for money (besides for a mirror.) Still, I need lots of ideas. Help?

Beautiful flooring. I don't have "no money" ideas but a few "little money" ideas. Check out thrift stores like Savers, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity or secondhand consignment furniture stores.
-Get the window fixed, add a patterned window decal.
-Floating shelves for storage. You can put towels, extra toilet paper rolls, shampoo, etc. There are affordable options at Lowes and West Elm. I've also done cute baskets under a pedastal sink for storage including rolled up hand towels and tp)
-Room freshener for the top of the back of the toilet, the type with a pretty vessel and twigs. You can find affordable ones at Pier One or stores like Ross.
-Look at thrift or second hand consignment stores for a mirror with an interesting frame, maybe a regency type of frame, I'd go with a square or rectangular shape. You could paint the frame or leave it vintage.
-Walmart has a good selection of bathroom rugs in bright colors.
Etsy has some good finds also for decor and mirrors.
Lowes clearance racks. Grab a gallon of paint that has been return or wasn't the right color for really cheap and an over the toilet cabinet for your things and you can even stash the TP in it. A bright shower curtain and/or floor mats, always on sale at target. Its a good space and for little money you can really change it up.
That really is a blank canvas... I think we could all be more specific (and helpful) in our advice if we had a concept of what the rest of the house looked like, or what inspires you.
As it is:
- Not much you can do about the lack of ventilation, unfortunately.
- Paint will give you the most noticeable change (cheaply). Make sure to go glossy, as this must be a pretty damp room.
- Looks like you have plenty of room for free-standing storage or floating shelves.
- TP holders & towel bars are very cheap at the hardware store or Target- that's an easy fix.
- Potted plants can be very happy in steamy bathrooms!
- Go thrifting!
You could make your own window decal with tissue paper and liquid starch. You can get pretty creative with that! The Big Lots near me (don't know if you have that store where you are) has very colorful chindi rugs, very inexpensive. Not knowing your tastes or what the rest of the room looks like, it's hard to make recommendations. If you want art on the walls, you can either make it yourself or ask an artistic friend for help. Maybe this would be a good use of multi-colored Sharpie pens if your parents allow? Good luck and let us see the results!
Basic quarter-round trim is very affordable and will help make the edge of the floor look a little more finished. You can even use trim creatively on the wall to add some 3D texture. If you want actual baseboard, sometimes Habitat for Humanity Re-Stores or other salvage places will have pieces of baseboard left over from construction sites - worth a look since you wouldn't need very much.
Some paint would go a long way. I wouldn't necessarily do all the walls, but something on the same wall as the toilet and sink would add some visual interest and make the window and fixtures "pop" more. NO BEIGE! A shelf or two would be good to put flowers on. Check out the DIY on how to build your own floating shelves. Finally, a chromed towel rack and tp roll shouldn't cost that much, but would add function and class the joint up a bit.
Good for you for taking the project on! The room has beautiful colors and materials with the wood all around and simple white fixtures. A simple medicine cabinet above the sink will do a lot and will add storage. If your parents are willing to throw in a few more bucks a vanity light above the mirror would make a huge impact and make the room very usable for getting ready.
I think the biggest impact will be to paint the walls. I don't know the colors in the rest of your house, but with all the wood tones and clean white in there a nice earthy green or blue would look great and make the room feel very peaceful and serene.
I agree that some floating shelves over the toilet would look great, and you can do this very cheaply. Home improvement stores have metal brackets you can buy for a few dollars each (or you can pay a bit more at a place like Anthropologie for more ornate ones) and then you can buy a few birch, poplar or oak boards at a home improvement store to set on the brackets. They'll age nicely with the steam, so you don't even have to stain them if you don't want.
Finally, I think a few glass bottles/vases, a rug on the floor, a towel rack and some hand towels will do a ton. You can get these things over time, and for the knick-knacky stuff you can go to estate sales or antique shops to get them for very cheap.
I hope that helps. Good luck!
paint one wall a deep color, like dark blue.
Personally, I don't like to open a bathroom door and stare at a toilet. I would consider getting a few cheap plexiglass panels from Home Depo along with "etching paper" and make a hanging panel. "Etch" the plexiglass with a pattern you like and hang it (or chain several together) from the ceiling between the toilet and the sink. Get a mirror for over the sink.
Large artwork would help. Can't see the lighting so can't comment on it.
Wow that is a nice bathroom for someone who is only 19.
When I lived in a small space (with little money) I hung two baskets above the toliet (from TJMaxx $7.00 each) mounting the bottom of the basket to the wall, making them into storage shelves. I store toliet paper in one, towels rolled up in the other. I also found a pair of Ibex horns (anything natural would work) and mounted them on round mirrors to hang above the vantities (I have also made other type mirrors using things found in nature). I hung a $4.00 shelf I found at Ocen State Job Lots (look at TJ's, Target, Ikea, Wal-Mart, etc). and put a pillar candle (always inexpensive at above). For color, paint, paint, paint, always a cheap way to go. Another thing I've done is used sheets or fabric remnants, soak them in liquid starch and apply to wall (Will not hurt the wall and comes off easily.) One fun thing to do (especially in a kids' bath or for a single person) is to paint with chalkboard paint, place a glass container with chalk in the bethroom to encourage graffitti!! Let your friend have fun. If you would like to see photos of some of these ideas, just email me at nannemess@yahoo.com and I will send them to you. Have fun!!!
I'm with House Voyeur - Seems like a very nice bathroom for a 19 year old. I like its simplicity and clean lines. From the look of the hall paneling and door hardware, you probably live in a very nice house. Your parents probably have a clean, slick aesthetic that they are trying to keep throughout the whole house.
Just get a nice mirror and some colorful towels (pretty sure your parents could spring for those) and you'll claim the space enough to feel like it's your own.
Magdalena,
I am confused. I understand you are 19 and living at home. Do you have a job? If so, could you purchase some items you might like for your bathroom (for example, a mirror?) Do your parents own a screwdriver? If so you can buy very inexpensive but nice looking toilet paper holders and towel bars at the hardware store, Target, Ikea, Home Depot etc. and install them yourself. Very easy. If you are not comfortable doing it then ask a guy friend of yours to help.
We AT readers are not completely understanding your situation. Do your parents NOT want to finish the bathroom? Do they not have ANY money? Are they lazy? And why CAN'T you ask them for these things???
Please explain.
It's lovely, I wouldn't do much! Just add a simple mirror a top the sink.
As a college student I can lament about trying to make "dull" spaces more interesting on a very limited budget.
I'd start (with the okay from your parents) by painting a wall will a bold or jewel tone color, whatever matches their style. By focusing on one wall you don't have to buy much paint. Places like Sherwin Williams sell "mistints" that can actually be nice colors for cheaper than their standard colors.
Then, maybe think about some DIY lighting, paper lanterns can be a nice way to add softer lighting. I got a few for about $3 each..
Find a picture or color or word that you can build around, use it when chosing color.
Save old magazines and buy posterboard to create collages or "poster art" and put them in poster frames (usually about $8-$30)
As one who once painting my parent's half bath a bright cranberry with yellow trim. I say, GOOD LUCK and all the power to ya!
This bathroom looks nice! And you can do whatever you want with some additional accessories.
Personally, I wouldn't paint the walls, would leave the white and just add some bright accessories.
Saw that IKEA has some good offers.Don't know whether you can afford to bye the accessories at once, but you can always add them one by one.
Here are some examples with bath accessories:
1.Shower curtain - $6.99
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50181989
2.Bath mat - $19.99
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?WRN=-1421544771&SKU=15976888&RN=2050&
3.Laundry basket - $7.99
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10191259
4.Pendant light - $8.00
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10201611
(it looks like a wrinkled towel to me :) )
5.Wall shelves - $49.99
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80163781
(you can use them as a towel holder , check this inspiring idea:

6.Wall shelf - $12.99
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09867186
(may mount it above the sink)
So far : $105.95
And as you sad, you can ask your parents for a mirror, here is one which can be mounted on the wall
above the sink :
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20079403
It has even space for a hairbrush, comb, jewelry etc. inside on the doors.
As a final touch, you can put a nice looking painting, or a poster above the toilet , or on the wall against the door.
Hope you liked the above examples of accessories and the rough calculation of their total value.
Good luck and enjoy decorating!
Yes! TJMAxx, Target (for the most part) and Ikea are the best places to go for decor on a budget. You can even see a local thrift store or Goodwill. You never know what you'll find for an amazing deal. And if you make purchases carefully, you can add splashes of color (like in the frame of the mirror, even if you have to paint it) throughout the room without having to paint every wall or it being too much. And parents like not painting walls. Mine did, anyway. Another thing I've seen is the temporary wallpaper (http://www.tempaperdesigns.com/patterns.nxg). You can take it down as easily as peeling a sticker off of the wall. I don't know if you've heard of Fat Heads (NFL) but it works the same way. A rug with a pretty pattern or some stripes would add a lot of color and interest. Glass vase for a toilet paper holder. Towel racks can be purchased in sets for cheap as well. And if you're looking for a deal on accessories, when Pier 1 has a sale, they HAVE A SALE. =] I wish you all the best. Don't worry about everyone else being concerned with your personal life. Just enjoy your bathroom.
Burnttoast, chill out! She just wanted pointers to decorate her bathroom. No need to read into it.
I think painting it could be nice. And to keep it cheap you can look at Lowes or Home Depot for "oops" paint. It's colors that people had mixed and return so the store sells it at a discount. I also agree that something next to the toilet to hide it would be nice. Maybe a nice tall plant. And try the dollar store. You'd be surprised but some have some really nice stuff. And if it's cute but an ugly color- spray paint.
My parents are just not interested in decorating, they don't care about it. Since the rest of the walls in my house are all white I'm not sure about painting a wall but I like the idea of covering the toilet with a plant or something and setting up a mirror with an interesting frame, colorful shelves, towels, etc. I'll see what I can find and show the results in a few days
Oh and I'm sure you all know questions are edited before they are published, that's why maybe you find strange the "i don't want to ask my parents for money besides a mirror"... what I meant originally was that I wouldn't like to ask my parents for a lot of money to do this, but I know the bathroom needs a lot of things so to decorate it spending money will be inevitable, for example I would at least have to buy a good mirror.
In my bathroom I have always used cards (postcards, greeting cards etc) framed in cheap, basic frames like you can get at IKEA or Target for like $5 or whatever. When you get tired of one card, put in a new one. no use spending money on decor that is going to suffer the steam and grime a bathroom can throw at it.
I recently painted my bathroom after my landlord did some mold remediation and since it was a rental (and I hoped to get the money off my rent but wasn't sure he would go for it), I didn't want to spend a lot either. We did a light aqua/blue, and painted all the walls and ceiling the same color (to save money). It's a little weird to do that but it actually creates a sort of nice underwater feeling in there. Make sure and cover those beautiful floors if you do paint.

For the girl on a budget:
1) Free is good. Check out instructables.com and type "bathroom" into the search box. Granted, you're going to get a lot of nonsense, but you'll come up with some free or nearly-free stuff you can do make.
2) if you have a crafty/artistic friend (or if you're crafty yourself), a hand-painted canvas "rug" would be great. Any large piece of sturdy fabric, painted in a pleasing pattern, stitched around the edge.
3) I'm with many posters: Gotta fix the window and put in some plants. You might be able to finagle the window fixing yourself. Poke around at it and you'll be surprised at how handy you are.
4) Storage seems really important. Find a couple of wooden crate-type boxes from a fruit stand, grocery store, (wine crates work too - check with the liquor store to see if/when they get them in) etc... and stack them on that wall between the toilet and sink. Voila!
5) when you paint, make sure you get paint that is mildew resistant or it won't matter how much money you spend. The lack of ventilation will ruin it.
6) craft paint is very inexpensive, can be purchased at Wal-mart AND you can stencil a border for less than $10. Look up "stenciling" on the internet for a million how-tos.
7) if you decide to go with shelves, make sure you are setting them into a stud or they will fall off the minute you put weight on them. Dad might be very helpful here. Offer to cook dinner or wash his car or something. If you can find a wooden shipping pallet out behind a grocery store or hardware store, ask if you can have it. Rip it apart so that you have shelf-sized pieces of wood (you'll need a hammer and a pair of work gloves) and you have the beginnings of a rustic shelf for under the window/over the toilet (use $2 shelf brackets from any hardware store).
You could add a few plants on a shelf, in a pot, or hanging on the walls that will help the room feel like it has more fresh air than it does. Go for plants that love humidity, or tropical environments. They should help clean the air, soak up the humidity, and they should do well in a bathroom.
When I looked at the picture I thought "it looks like Scandinavian design!" Finland. Sauna. IKEA.
