Q: It has been 8 months since we've moved in and there is very little artwork on the walls. Any suggestions for this bedroom wall behind the bed? I do enjoy photos and would have to stay within a relatively small budget. I have considered a bold patterned wallpaper, but it seems pricey for these 11' ceilings.

Nomade Express Slee...
Do you own or rent?
Often our bedrooms are the last to get those design touches that help us feel more comfortable and enjoy our space more.
Placing one of those vintage bus scrolls above your bed is a graphic way of filling a large space. Adding a mirror along the side wall above your dresser can help reflect light back into the space, depending on where your windows are.
If you owe (or don't mind repainting before moving out) you could stencil a design on the wall behind the bed or paint the shape of a headboard. Or if you rent you could make a fairly inexpensive upholstered headboard and hang with with a french cleat (strong, and only a few screw holes to spackle later) or use wall decals.
I know someone who took photos of flowers, edited them a bit on the computer and had them enlarged so that they became abstract images. They then put them in large IKEA frames which you can get for $20-$25. So you can end up with a large piece of original art for about $40. It looks like you need a couple of large pieces to fill the space.
Do you know about http://www.20x200.com/ ? They have original artwork starting at $20. I would imagine you could find something on here within your budget to help with the bare walls. Seems affordable enough that you could even do a "collage" of sorts with many small prints.
If you want a bold pattern on the wall, why not tape with blue tape and paint over with one or two colors to make a design on the wall when you remove the tape? This could be pretty inexpensive if you were able to find "paint scraps" from friends or neighbors.
Another possibility would be to mount a piece of picture rail molding and then use it to hand everything from mirrors or pictures to ornaments to found objects to give texture to the wall. If you are renting, you could probably leave the molding in place and get thanks from the landlord. It's great not having to put nails in the wall!
You could do some textile art one above the bed and another on the other wall. The bed needs some dressing up since you have no headboard maybe adding two euro size pillows with a colorful sham.
These are mod and bold-

If I were you...
I would buy a large piece of plywood and fix the wallpaper your heart desires on it then hang it over your bed.
if you have a photo in mind, you can have it printed (larger) onto canvas. it is a great look, and not real expensive.
I think the mirror idea above the dresser is a good one. Also, if you live in NYC, you might want to check out New York Central Art in the East Village. They have the most amazing range of paper with gorgeous patterns. From Japanese rice paper prints, Italian graphic paper, to bold Indonesian leaf paper. You can also look into West Elm's selection of frames. They're pretty in-expensive and really let whatever you frame stand out. Good luck!
Have you thought about a stencil something like the ones at royal design or Modello.

I'd get decorative paper you can get affordably from a crafts store or a sheet of premium gift wrapping paper or even a single sheet of your favorite wall paper. Then frame it with an IKEA frame. The largest size I found is 28"x40". http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30132527
Depending on your budget, you can find really big pieces of art at Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshalls.
Decals. We move quite often (Army family) and I have some pictures and heavier items but I like to use decals on the walls, especially the bedroom walls, because they are easy to change, easy to remove, and look really great. I've had everything from flowers and trees to my favorite quotes or inspirational sayings on our walls. I've found some beautiful ones on Etsy or you can make your own.
I suggest creating a headboard feature by hanging 95” draperies behind the bed. You could go bold, graphic and modern or soft, sheer, and femme, whatever your personal style. It would be something you could change, use elsewhere, or take with you when you move.
rollerwall! pick your paint colors and a roller pattern and put your bold pattern up there for little cost and an easy change later.
you seem to need to address more than the walls. where is the light source? You need bedside lamps or a floor lamp in the corner or a lamp on top of the dresser. how about a mirros on that dresser too?
more shots of this room would be nice. it's pretty much a blank slate.
These are under $10, large as you like, easy to customize, and look great if you are handy with double stick tape:
*Rasterbator (print a single image across a large grid of standard paper) http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/gallery.gas
*Paint chip art. Google around you will find oodles. I did one a while ago that came out nifty: http://www.auntpeaches.com/2010/09/paint-chip-art.html
*Book wall. http://www.auntpeaches.com/2011/01/thatched-paper-wall.html
*Record wall. Just raid your dirty uncle's closet or the local thrift store for enough records to COVER the entire wall. Tack them up with nails or earthquake wax (silly putty). I saw this in a bar once. Very dramatic http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qePYSh_XM3I/St27-at9xJI/AAAAAAAAAIM/BqaCervNNEo/s1600-h/Record+Wall.jpg
Good luck :)
Maybe similar to other comments here but have you checked out the wall decals at http://www.whatisblik.com/
I've never used them myself but they might either work for you or give you inspiration to paint something yourself.
Removable wall decals!! There are some fabulous ones of trees, birds, etc. You can find them on Etsy and other online sources and they look great and work well even for renters.
Headboard, first. Real or improvised -- thrift or new. But I think you NEED a headboard.
Then you can hang something over it.
In my guest room (too small for a headboard) I hung a large tapestry that nearly fills the wall. I bought it brand new still in the shipping box at a flea market for $10, but honestly, that was a once-in-a-lifetime deal.
In my bedroom, I have a sunburst mirror. The bed is flanked by floor to ceiling drapes on small windows, and by matching end tables with lamps. All this together fills the wall and looks good together.
In my partner's room, he has hung a 3-D metal sculpture of a branch with leaves (from Big Lots) over his bed. (I think it cost about $15.) Home Goods usually has similar 3-D pieces. (They are fairly light weight...)
A yard of beautiful fabric stretched on painters stretcher bars might work for you.
Lots of options. Just go big, the wall space looks naked!
Personally, I'm over wall decals. Similar to black chalkboard paint, I think it is a design idea that is super trendy and played out. Just my opinion.
Here's one affordable art idea, large scale black and white photographic prints:

Decals are played out but black and white prints aren't? man it must get heavy carrying that pretention around with you all the time....
i like the curtain idea!
i also like the idea of taking a small amount of the pricey wallpaper you like and making a frame on the wall for it over the bed. I don't think you have to attach it to heavy plywood - I think you can use light foam core board or even just stick it to the wall with glue or thumbtacks. Then you can make a faux frame out of inexpensive wood molding from a home improvement store. Mitre cut the corners, then paint it whatever color you like, and secure the pieces to the wall with small nails (you don't even have to build and hang it as a framed piece, just secure the 4 sides of the "frame" all directly to the wall).
also, in addition to whatever you do above the bed, paint the walls to warm up the space.
be creative and don't be intimidated - whatever you try can always be changed :-)
@ aunt peaches: that rasterbator is awesometastic! thanks for posting :-)
This:

It scales well with the space, it goes with your colour scheme, it matches your other artworks, it's a dynamic and interesting picture, it's relatively cheap, and it's quite light so it won't matter if it falls off the wall.
go to zazzle.com and order an ernst haeckel print of your choice. buy a hmong quilt.
You could get some canvas artwork almost anywhere. I would go vertical with your artwork...
Sorry, not much of a help. :/
i would buy a large canvas ($15-20), paint it white and then add some bold blue, red, orange or green shapes to create an original work of art.
