Our bookcases are topped with a row of books, bookends, candles, frames and a clock — there's not a lot of room for greeting cards. And postcards? Our fridge is covered with a magnet collection and to-do lists. We had to come up with another quick and easy way to display cards as part of our décor.
We just took one long strip of iridescent white ribbon, tacked it up with clear thumbtacks, and then spaced out clothes pins down the length of the ribbon. It's a great way to feel the love from friends and family as we come and go.

those tacks look red to me! i like the theory of this idea, the execution.... not so much. maybe a decorative knob or hook anchored to the wall, with a wide heavy weight grossgrain ribbon tied on would be more appealing.
this looks sloppy to me... i dont understand the extra ribbon hanging off the top?
i did something similar in my bedroom only i hung twin horizontally across the top of my wall... like a clothesline... it looked great and got lots of compliments.agree,
it kind of looks like a rope made of plastic grocery bags tacked to the wall with red thumbtacks and clothespins.
Yea, that looks yucky. But I like the other ideas, you can make this look a lot better.
Kind of a junky copy of the same idea for storing little girls' hair barrettes. Execution is sloppy. Fix it: Make the ribbon hang from some kind of a decorative device (your choice) with a small weight (again, your choice) at the bottom. That would look much better as tension would keep ribbon stretched out and neat, then just make sure to alternate sides with the clothespins and cards.
BTW, why is AT showing such a junky execution of this idea? Come on people! Where's my eye candy???
At first I thought the photo was showing how someone used a slice of bubble wrap to showcase their cards. I agree with the others who already offered more elegant and tasteful suggestions for a common predicament.
Skimming through my Google Reader I thought these pictures were the before from a makeover. The materials don't go together at all (shiny ribbon with rustic clothespins and red plastic thumbtacks?) and it looks disorganized and sloppy.
harsh harpies!
I thought it was fly paper, a really long peice of fly paper.
I'm sorry, but I thought this was flypaper too. Flypaper for pesky clothespegs
What is going on with the execution of some of these crafty ideas? The white ribbon looks totally washed out against the white wall. Would look better if the ribbon was colorful or patterned and the cards were arranged.
I have created a small memory board in my kitchen with criss crossed grosgain ribbon that is an elegant way to feature my cards. If I have an overflow of cards, I drape a ribbon over the entryway and pin the cards to the ribbon.
ghetto
yeahhh ... i agree with most posters above - the execution is MEH. this same idea could have been done MUCH nicer. what about anchoring the ribbon with a decorative hook, and at least using brads to attach cards to it? this looks like a preschool project. sorry linds ...
Oh, erikaheus...LOL!
My thoughts exactly. I thought it was packing tape stuck to the wall with thumbtacks!
is this a joke?
I can't get past my first thought of it looking like an intestine. Sorry, but this just doesn't work for me. But what you like is what counts.
Tacky tacky tacky! Terrible craftsmanship, location choice and execution. TACKY!
Let this be on 20 more house tours and everyone will love it!
I too thought it was bubble wrap. It's just plain messy.
Add me to the "is this a joke" crowd...
Not cute. Hell no.
pretty homespun
Also, one more (related) question: Is there an editorial staff on AT? I'm just wondering as I've noticed things have been generally getting sloppy lately (poor spelling/grammar, posts containing really tacky/poor quality DIY or reposts of the same thing over and over again, etc.).
I love AT but sometimes I wonder what's going on behind the scenes. On the other hand, I think the Kitchn site has been generally doing well lately, especially with this month's theme.
Good idea...but next time use a nice ribbon or some twine even, instead of a long piece of packing tape ripped off a box.
my guess is that the ribbon looks a lot better in person than in the photo where the iridescence looks plasticy rather than sparkly.
Ugly. Just throw your greeting cards away. Or if they're super special to you, store them in a box...then throw them away when you unearth them five years later.
This reeks of desperation.
"Our fridge is covered w/a magnet collection..."
Um, why don't you put those magnets to work to -- oh, I don't know -- HOLD UP YOUR CARDS???
If they're in a competition to see how much junk they can collect, then this is a great idea!
Ummm.. I just made an account so that I could comment. I love AT and the kitchn & odeedoh. However, this is a really sad diy. I thought it was ajoke. There are so many better ways to display card.. or anything other then what I though was clothespins & a strip of bubble wrap. This really should have been edited!
I like Nikki's idea of using twine, that could be cute.
I didn't think it could get any worse than the fabric-covering-the-tv post yesterday. I was mistaken.
I also thought it was flypaper, which might have been better (or less awful?) since you could just slap the cards on there without stopping on your way to the fridge.
wow, people. is there really a need to be this harsh about a decorating post?? one or two harsh comments is enough to get the point across...and even then, is it really necessary?
This was a quick project, using only what I had in the house, to help dress up bare walls. Apartment Therapy is a place for sharing ideas. We would love to see how you might do this project. Please take photos and inspire all of us!
@kcturl
I totally agree!!!
I thought it was packing tape
covering a long crack in the wall.
Maybe AT is starting a
joke du jour section?
Lindseyroberts don't you listen to all these people! They're just naysayers, who are anti plastic ribbons and thumbtacks. Just remember, if YOU like it - that's all that counts.
With that said...
I personally think it's awful BUT it's because I'm clothespin intolerant.
Hahahahahaha!!!
why not use your magnets?
here's a bunch of ideas!

You "had to" come up with another way to display this? Why don't you ask some 5 year olds to help you next time?
Lindsay--I understand the pressure of blogging for $$, but this idea and execution are at the low-end of the taste pool. Why would anyone display greeting cards?
Not every idea needs to be shared.
If this were a personal blog, I think the comments would have been different but for a professional decor/design/organization blog, it should have some editorial standards imo. I hardly think that this post would have passed AT's own "Cure"...
What the hell is it I am looking at?
The nicest thing I can say is that this looks horrible. What happened to design & content standards!?
I do something like this with Christmas cards. I take ribbon, and kind of drape it on bookshelves (the books hold down the ends, so I don't have to use tacks). Then I found some really tiny clear plastic clothespins...probably at The Container Store. I get a lot of compliments!
The idea behind this is good, and I have done something similar, but it looks thrown up. Nice, tidy ribbon with a clean beginning and end, decorative paper clips/tiny clothes pins/ staples. It is great to share the love but unless you have infants, are having some sort of life disaster this isn't how it should look, and definitely not on a design based website.
I can't believe how mean people are! This is a great idea and definitely something I'll be incorporating into my new apartment.
This is a miss.
