Q: We have a wonderful marble coffee table that my husband and his roommates bought off Craigslist his freshman year of college, and it's still going strong. The only problem is, it seems to have some kind of plastic or acrylic coating over the stone, and after a number of moves and some hard living (from college students and toddlers) it's starting to chip and peel [photo below]. How do I fix it up so it looks nicer? Should I strip off the coating (if so, how?) and treat the marble somehow? Can I replace the coating? And, heck, what IS this coating? -Sent by Nicki

Editor: That is fascinating! I don't know anything about marble—other than that I covet it—so I'm hoping our always-wise readers have some insights to share. What is this mysterious coating, and what should Nicki do about it? Thanks!
