Right up there with the right way to set the table is fancy napkin folding. It isn't exactly necessary and you could probably go your whole life without ever learning how, but why not learn a couple and impress your friends. It will make that evening of pizza and beer that much more interesting:

distasteful yuck
Napkin rings are a pet peeve -- what are you supposed to do with them once you are using the napkin? Useless clutter. But a neatly folded (and not too kitsch) napkin is nice when entertaining. Makes the table look fancy. (I certainly wouldn't bother for every day.)
Guess I'm tasteless, 'cause I think the tuxedo serviette is pop and good sporting fun.
