Professional blogger Andrew McDonald thought a little kindness and honesty was the best way to get his camera back. He recorded a hilarious 24-image flip book showing his sad camera-less self with white-board captions.
In between jokes about forgetting his camera inside his dog (just look at it!) and taking photos in the bath, Andrew's pictorial gets the job done. He jots down his name and email address on one of the last slides.

Even if you're not ready to commit to a mini-movie, shooting one frame with your contact information is a safe way to transmit your info to somebody who finds your camera. But if you're willing to go the extra mile, it might even help with a crook. When your camera's captor inevitably looks through your pics, they'll find a pictorial pity party that might just sway them to return it!

but yeah, one pic on a camera would be a good idea. i've returned a camera by recognizing someone in a pic before. but if i hadn't, it would have just sat at that restaurant lost and found.
I stuck an address label inside the battery door and one on the outside. I figure that gives me a pretty good chance of getting it back from someone who is honest. Even if it is stolen and sold and the outside label peeled off, someone will eventually find the one inside and maybe get it back to me.
