We're always looking for new ways to deal with hideous ceiling fixtures. This solution uses a material that we're seeing a lot of recently—felt! It's so easy that you'll only need four things to complete this project!
The Four Things You'll Need:
- Lamp shade
- felt (1-1.5 yards or about 20 felt sheets from a craft store)
- hot glue gun and glue
- scissors
This project was conceived by Ashley at Casa Sugar and was created by adhering little folded felt circles to a ceiling shade using a dab of hot glue. Full-details and instructions are available from Casa Sugar.

Shaw's Original Fir...
It looks great but, I wonder how long something like this takes? It looks like hundreds of circles.
Can you vacuum it?
Interesting, but it seems to block-out the light emanating from it considerably. It seems like a lot of work for a ceiling fixture that doesn't generate much light.
and I wonder how much light manages to get past those layers of felt...
I would think that the heat of the fixture glass would loosen the glue-gun glue pretty quickly. Crafter's glue would probably hold better, but be much messier!
Ceiling has two I's...
...and it does seem like it would be simpler and more effective to replace the fixture with one that's more to your liking, then replace it again when you move.
wow, why is everyone on this post so grumpy...I thought it was very cute!!and unique ( not another IKEA cheap fix...)
I didn't find the responses grumpy at all- I've been wondering some of the same things others have wondered, especially about the heat melting the glue. I do think it's pretty to look at, though.
Felt circles? Makes me think of those cotton pads.
I actually find the result repulsive, sorry, folks. Looks like something is crawling all over it, brrr.
I like it - looks neat! I'd worry about the light not making it through the layers of felt too though... if I attempted this I'd probably try tissue paper instead.
I think it's really charming. If you want more light to come through, use a lighter fabric and spray starch it.
I think it looks neat too, but why not make a larger felt piece and attach it to the ceiling so that it covers the light fixture?
I think it looks cool. I'm actually looking for a shade to cut down on the brightness of my ceiling light while still letting a little illumination peep through. Bought a bunch of Boontje garlands for this very purpose, but I might save 'em for a while and give this a go with a cheap shade, instead.
When I first saw the pictures, I thought they were the "before."
"Gee," I thought, "I can see why someone would want to hide THAT ugly ceiling fixture... but I'm sure someone will comment that it's not so bad."
Oops. I guess this project's not for me! Maybe if it weren't so... massive looking?
I "shingled" the glass shades of an ugly, bathroom vanity light with mussel shells. It was gorgeous. Not so much the shattering of shells in the porcelain sink beneath when the hot glue softened from the heat of the light bulbs. . . .
I have to agree with those who think this felt application is an atrocious looking, light-blocking little item.
ohhhhh lamp shade cozies!
I also thought the fixture pictured was the one this project was going to hide, Emika! Whoops!
AT, did you mean to call it a "celing" fixture? The picture makes me think you're talking about a ceiling fixture.
For renters - how to remove the bits of felt and glue when we leave?
