Q: I recently moved into a studio apartment and I have this closet door that opens into the main room and also the hallway that I would like to "camouflage" it since I only need to access it from the hallway. Since the only layout I've found that works best means putting my bed in front of this door, it has become and eye sore. I've thought about hanging a curtain on that wall, however I can't cover the whole wall since there is a heater there and I think going halfway across will look a bit odd. Any recommendations?

Shaw's Original Fir...
Instead of hiding it, why not draw focus to it? You could hang a tapestry or large poster over it - or even paint the door one of the colors from your blanket (if you're allowed). Or maybe actually put the art on the door, like painting a leafy vine or a bold graphic geometric design.
Instead of a curtain, how about a decorative fabric panel that has an image or nonrepeating print on it- I'm thinking something Marrimeko (sp) or just something interesting from the fabric store. I don't know what is further to the left in the photo- or if there even is a further left- but if the idea of covering only part of the wall is too asymetical for you, you could hang another there to balance it. If you're allowed to drill holes in the wall you could also hang a curtain wire across the whole wall, cover the whole wall with curtains and during the season when the heater is on, open the curtains so the heater is revealed. You could also hide and reveal artwork this way.
Instead of a curtain hang a really beautiful kilim or a really beautiful piece of cloth over it.
Hm, how many months of the year do you use this heater? Maybe you could cover it as well and just uncover it during heating season?
I concur, get a giant art piece or tapestry or fabric streched over a art canvas stretcher. Don't paint it, I think that would look odd. Good luck!
I, also, have a superfluous door in my apartment and placed a wall unit/bookshelf (it's around six feet high) directly in front of the door -- it works.
The door itself is not an eyesore - but it is always going to look odd when a door is blocked by furniture.
Two strategies; a) hide the door or b) make it look like it isn't blocked. Since it's a mighty big door, I vote b):
Move the bed just a little bit away from the wall with the door - about one foot - it'll make the door look accessible. Then put a big green attention-seeking plant in the corner behind the door. A mirror or a colourful piece of art on the wall to left of the door will also help make the door disappear visually.
Canyou remove the doornob - if so that will do a lot to hiding it (should be easy enough to put back on when you move out). Getting rid of that will make it look less door like to start and will make it easier to hang something on/in front of it.
Could you rotate the bed use the door as a headboard? Otherwise, I like the ideas of hanging a tapestry over it.
Developing Hernando House's suggestion, how about turning the bed so the door becomes a headboard and then putting up a hanging or curtain the same width as the bed at the same height as the doorframe?
Remove the doorknob, then place a filled bookshelf in front of it.
remove doorknob, hang art or move bed away from wall + plant.
I like Abigailc's suggestion... Then that bookcase could be at the foot of the bed.
You say you still want to use the door, so putting a bookshelf in front of it wont work. You could add shelving to turn it into a bookshelf/display. You could cover up the handel w/ a shelf and that would take away much of the "door" aspect.
I once had a door in my apt I only used occasionally, and I just added hooks to it and hung my jackets on it.
Also, I think I remember some crazy bookshelf wallpaper on a house tour that was used to cover a door...
And btw, I like you bed!
Would tenting the top half of your bed make the room look too small? I think it could look really cozy if you took a long piece of fabric, swagged it across the ceiling and draped it down to the floor on either side of your bed. One side would hide the door and the other would block out some of the beautiful light your apartment seems to get. Then maybe hang a round mirror above your headboard, to open up the space.
Since you said this door goes to a closet, I suggest putting in a split door so you can have some easy storage access right above your bed. I googled up this pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pickettfurniture/4891400531/
i would stencil THIS IS NOT A DOOR on it.
Lean a large mirror (or piece of framed art) against it. Ikea has oversized mirrors for under $100. It's functional too!
Or maybe you could turn the bookcase on it's end and hide the door with that.

my other idea is brilliant but you could do this too.
@ rahskir and antiquatedthinking - she said she DOESN'T need access to the door
I agree with previous suggestions of fabric panel/wall hanging, bookcase or large mirror
I have the same issue. I put an armoire in front of it. My room is small enough that you can't really see over the armoire by getting far enough away from it. Extra storage too!
It sounds like you have lots of great ideas. I like the different "move your furniture" ideas posted. But I am going to assume you have tried all the moving around and the way your furniture is set in the pic is the best way. Take the door knob off like suggested and store it for when you move out. Go to a hardware/lumber store and have a piece of wood (or even cardboard) cut to the size of the door (or a little smaller) Trim it out with trim (usually a hardware store will cut it for you) You are making a huge picture frame. Before you trim it out you could glue cork board material over the wood/cardboard and then cover it with fabric. Or you could paint the wood with magnetic paint and then cover it with fabric. Either way you have a fun way to display pictures. If you chose wood you could paint the wood with chalkboard paint. Or you could just cover the wood/cardboard with fabric or wall paper and let it be art. Hang it over the door or just prop it up in front of it. That could cover the door completely and then you still have the ability to remove it! (if you don't have something to miter the trim....don't miter it. I think non mitered frames can look good. fill the lines with wood glue and paint!) Have fun!

I'would make a blackboard....and draw something nice and have fun!...
Because your bedroom is already so beautifully minimal, I would totally do mcqueendom's suggestion and stencil. Funny, quirky, and easy to change later if you find a different solution.
You must remove the doorknob and replace it with a flat plate of some sort. I'm sure the hardware store has something. I just picture you hitting your head on the knob in the middle of the night. If possible I would turn the bed 90 degrees and then hang a curtain but I really don't think it is necessary. Just decorate the wall with prints and pictures and cover both the empty wall and door. With the knob gone it will be obvious that the door leads no where.
Remove the doorknob and buy a thin sheet of plywood. Paint the plywood white and flatten it against the door (with nails if your allowed to - you can alway putty up the walls afterwards) making a seamless and flat wall.
@saucefiend
I think you missed the point. The poster said it opens into a closet with a door on the other side, like a pass through. Get a split door, so you can open the top half of the door at your leisure, with easy shelf access. Every bedroom always needs more storage space.
I agree with Aninhas. Tent the top 1/3 or so of your bed with fabric that you swag across the ceiling and down on the other side of the bed. I've tried to hide doors in my apartment and unless you have the space to put large pieces of furniture in front of it, I think this is your best bet.
Why did people put multuiiple doors into closets? I have the exact same issue, though mine is in the middle of a wall in my living room! Literally, hiding behind the huge purple painting is a door. Look closely.

Remove the door knob and place a fabric panel within the doro frame, or even use wall paper (if lease allows). Then it will look like art work-frmaed and all.
Can you hang a curtain that is long enough to go behind the bed but not too long as to cover the heater?
How about creating a focal wall using these IKEA sheer panel curtains: ANNO UNI ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40122212 )?
They're relatively inexpensive and the pattern/colour is neutral enough to keep your small space open. Plus, the 'tree/branch' motif would look lovely with the HBC Point Blanket - creating a cosy rustic lodge cabin feel. :)
If you're concerned about the heater, you can always slide a panel when it's in use. Or you could easily cut out an opening in the panel - I think the heater should blend in nicely with the motif and not look like too much of a eye sore.
Good luck!
*log cabin!
How about painting the whole wall with a dark, textured paint technique (like in this post (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/house-tours/philip-and-leonas-wide-open-loft-house-tour-142160) or a bold pattern (like here http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/color-therapy/a-media-room-in-review-color-therapy-142188)? A bold pattern would require some precision, but a pattern that overrides the architecture could mask it without getting rid of it all together.
Rotate the bed, and add a fabric tapestry over your headboard that covers the door.
maybe someone already mentioned this, but i'd put an over-the-door set of hooks and hang scarves or sweaters or whatever on it.
Remove the doorknob, cover the whole door with thin plywood or something thick that is not flush with wall, canvas or whatever works and paint the exact same color as the walls. Put art work on left of it to distract eye.. round or square art, not another rectangle.
I would like to see your after..
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the plywood or whatever you use to cover should be from ceiling to bottom, like it is part of the architecture, not another outline of door.
artwork above bed and nothing on side wall would also be option...focal point
I would suggest hanging a fabric panel in front of it - but to make it seem intentional that it only covers half way across the wall make it functional! Pin your favorite photos to the fabric!!
I agree with Aninhas. I think if you covered the door with a curtain, then had the same width of curtain on the other side of the bed, it would look intentional that you were trying to create a more private feeling.
Wow! I feel like I've been attacked by suggestions! Thank you all!
As far as rotating the bed and using the door as a headboard, I've thought of that but rotating the bed eats up space and just doesn't work.
I like the idea of the ikea panels, I'm definitely going to look into that. And also just painting that whole wall one solid color (if i am allowed to paint the door..) And yes, that pretty doorknob needs to come off.
Hopefully I'll have a ridiculously sweet update for this issue!
@mcqueendom- thats a freakin awesome idea! "This is not a door" lol people would love it and laugh at it. Its a great idea to not take it too seriously!
You clearly have space to move the bed away from the door and the wall - I'd do that so the door can at least have the appearance of being accessible.
Darn - Didn't catch this in time for Molly to see it, but I hope you do!
I love the idea of hanging a curtain in front of it. It wouldn't look silly if you add a tie-back just past the door itself, so the curtain is hanging from the corner to ever-so-gently past it.
From there, you could pull the hinges and take it out completely to get a cross-breeze once it starts getting truly wonderful outside!
Ceilings mount art system…
Hang hooks the same distance in the ceiling as the door knob sticks out. Personally I would find some heavy duty hooks and some chain or funky rope and eye hooks (more cost effective) make or buy a canvas frame, some paint and create something that ties your Hudson Bay Blanket to the canvas. Or get a great piece of fabric a staple gun and stretch the fabric around the frame a collage of people, places, things you love! Instant art… IF you do this you don’t have to worry about removing the door or having the hardware show :)
Oh I see it, bodicegoddess! The curtain idea is still swirling around in my brain... I might just try that out since it seems like the easiest solution. Artwork also is good, however I am bad at decision making and choosing the perfect artwork can take a year.
I'm going to try to get to the one of the building reuse centers and see if I can find some materials to bring those art skills i've never had out.
also, here is the floor plan... i tried to include it with my original question but guess you're only allowed one image.

I LOVE that blanket... anybody know where it's from?
I have the same problem, so I hung an oversized (I mean large 4'H x 5'W) framed piece of art on the wall overlapping the door. It makes the door disappear & none of my friends even notice. And if the room allows, it could become a great headboard!
Hi Evan,
It looks like a the Iconic Hudson's Bay Blanket..
http://www.thebay.com/eng/search/EntireSite-Hudsons_Bay_Blanket
Dress it like a window, and close the draperies.
I agree with window idea...if you just have it on half the wall, it will look like a window. Especially if you split the curtain in the middle and have something showing a bit in the middle to look like a sheer or a shade poking through (even if the middle part is a narrow strip just taped to part of the door). It is the illusion that counts.
Big curtain with tieback idea a close second.
A slightly crazy idea would be to create a headboard/sideboard out of a wood pallet or two and hang decorations (little flags or bobbles) from the pallets.
But I also really like the stencil idea with "This is not a door". That could be really cool. :-)
Another vote for the "This is Not a Door" stencil idea.
If you decide to do the stencil, you could show off your love for Magritte (french artist) by adding blue skies, white clouds, and the words: Ceci n'est pas une porte.
It's a reference to his painting "Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe."
I have the same issue and I'm having Calico Corners make me a three panel folding screen, in a fabulous fabric from Iman's collection. It just needs to be 84" high in order to completely block the door frame from sight.
One could also DIY pretty easily I'm sure.
...and any furniture placed in front of a door is
NOT ok! all kinds of wrong.
EMERGENCY FIRE EXIT - DO NOT BLOCK
i think some beautiful decorative hooks hung either in a row or at random places would look pretty. you could hang your most beautiful scarves or jewelry on the hooks.
another idea is to change out the knob with a flat face plate (like others have said) and then create kind of "another door" next to it, with similar moulding. basically, if there's a way to make the door look more like a decorative pannel, you could add another. the symmetry would help make it seem more intentional...
Use plants you silly people.
Bamboo. Hello.
Plants that need not attention include "Mother-in-law's tongue" or a spider plant on a trellis with, well, look for yourself
