Q: I have a 6'x2' closet in my entryway, blocking the view of my dining area in my new condo. While I like the idea of having some sort of entryway storage, I really don't like that the giant closet is blocking the view of the dining room (which has a beautiful brick wall and a built-in. I was thinking of replacing it with a closet half the size, with top and bottom cubby holes for displays. But I can't quite picture how that would turn out:
• The first photo is the view from the entry, taken from the doorway.
• The second photo is a sideview of the closet and dining room, showing built-in (taken from the living room).
• The third photo is a floor plan of the condo.
What can I do to improve the view from this entryway?

Nomade Express Slee...
This recent post has lots of ideas for you:

I've seen many developer loft projects and in a lot of cases, the openness that you'd expect to see in a loft is divided up into small rooms with little daylight. Your unit on the other hand looks very open - I'd live here if I was in my 20s.
Do you need the closet? It seems you have a lot of closet space in your bedroom.
What about doing something decorative to the closet door fronts, such as wallpaper or stencils or something in a style that goes with your condo. Or put some kind of decorative panel or picture/art on them. Or paint the doors a contrasting color--darker would make it appear smaller/recede.
Alternately you could decorate around the closet door--add a shelves for decor above and beside it or put plates, photos, etc around it.
Personally I wouldn't want everyone to be able to see all the way into my house as soon as they step through the door--that's the purpose of an entry--to be a space between the outside and the inside.
That said, the view does need do something other than scream CLOSET!
IMO, remove it completely and rebuild off the back of kitchen cabinets. You could do a lot there from easy to nice.
if you still need the closet for storage, what if you just re-orient it along the wall? then it could be made any size you like along that wall and wouldn't be as "in your face" as it is now....
1st: Very nice layout and like the colors you have choosen to paint.
My first thought is always how to improve something without breaking the bank.
My thought is to take off the doors and hang a curtain where the coats would be hung. I'm going to 'assume' you have a top shelf in that closet. You could then paint the background where that top shelf is a pretty color or even wallpaper and use that as your display. If you don't like the curtain idea, put up doors just up to where the shelf is. If you don't have a shelf, install one and hang the rod lower.
If you HATE it, you can put the doors back up. Not too much invested and you can try plan B whatever that may be. Good Luck
I would take it out completely. If you need some storage for coats, etc., I would get an armoire that can be placed against the wall (which would reduce or almost eliminate the obstruction). If you have room for your coats in your master bedroom closets (!), than I would just install a few hooks or a coat tree once you take out the closet, so that there is a spot for guests to hang their hats.
I agree - with Slang1. REMOVE. Walking into a lovely view is a delight, and you'll be delighted every day if you are looking through to your big, beautiful space.
You can always do some kind of landing strip/entry table kind of deal right when you come through the door (necessary for dropping keys and hanging coats). The closer to the entry, the less it will take away the view of your space.
A lot of loft-type condos seem to have this dead stop as you walk in the front door. I suspect it is to give some "public" space for things like deliveries and inconvenient girl scout cookie deliveries - so everyone who comes to your door isn't seeing every square foot of where you live. Not everyone is worthy to be all up in your business.
But, to me, the wall takes away from the great joy of a loft - wide open space with views and light. :)
Knock it out and buy a freestanding closet. There are some really nice ones in every style. You can go the metal locker route for an industrial look, or a solid wooden armoire for more traditional. Personally I'm not a fan of built in closests. I like the option of changing the size or location.
i would suggest making the closet more visually interesting by painting the wall around the closet door in a different color. perhaps you could paint the kitchen column the same color, which will draw one's eye to those two. i think deep purple would look interesting.
I would suggest taking out of the closet and making a built in along the wall, next to the bookcase. you can make it wardrobe style, so that you can still hang coast and put shoes in it, but it would blend into the living room. Or is building in isn't in your budget now, start by removing and placing a slim wardrobe against the wall, and putting something custom in later.
You have a few low-cost options:
1: simply paint out the whole thing (including the trim) the same colour as the wall, including the handles
2: drywall it over and put the doors and access to the closet on the other side
3: paint it out as recommended and hang two pieces of matching vertical artwork on each door or get creative with the doors as someone recommended and put creative handles plus some artwork....
I had a similar problem with my entrance and I painted the doors the same colour as the wall and it appears almost seamless now.
I hope this was helpful. Good luck.
Just a beautiful big mirror on the wall would be great. I would change the wall color. Or perhpas painting white and turqoise horizontal stripes or white and light gray, would create a visual impact
Looking at the plans it seems like the builder said, "Oh crap, we forgot the closet! Well, let's just stick it here."
I completely agree with the rip it up and add a nice armoire idea. If you are up for a deconstruction I would definitely go that way. That closet is just an odd duck in your pretty condo. Otherwise, I would blend it in with paint. It doesn't solve your blocked view issue but it does keep it from looking so out of place.
I like the feeling of entering into an enclosed foyer. If this were mine I would not open it up. Perhaps you would like it more if you treated it as a foyer rather than a pass-through. Place a shallow console along the wall as a landing strip and for display, hang art above, decorative container below for umbrellas, whatnot. Find more interesting doors or enhance the ones you have (paint, paint and molding, wallpaper, maps, etc.). Find some gorgeous handles for them. AT had a post recently about unusual treatments for doors. There was a door that had an angular block pattern painted across it, incorporated into the wall paint. That would work great here.
...oh, how funny. The link that Surf posted is the one I was talking about.
When my wife and I purchased our 2-story standard modern house (renovated, remodeled, and added which took previous owner 5 years to finish due to permit problems).
Upon entering the short front entryway, there was a wall between living room and dining room. We had it completely removed. The whole area naturally lightened up. Larger space is very useful for party invitees, etc.
Very deaf-friendly environment.
The enclosed entry way doesn't bother me. Plus it's really nice to have a place to put coats, etc. Also, if there is a cost draft from your front door, or a hot one if you're somewhere hot, the barrier is nice.
You're right that it is ugly to come into. But you could jazz it up with different/painted/better doors, or maybe even a large scale mural painted right over the doors.
From the floor plan it looks like it would be relatively easy to remove it though, and you could do a new coat closet, or even hooks on the wall just inside your front door. You may need to patch the flooring in this scenario; so then you'll have a dark/light patch, unless you're very very lucky.
How about something fun to disguise it?

I vote for this as the easy solution:
simply paint out the whole thing (including the trim) the same colour as the wall, including the handles
more expesive solution:
removing the whole thing and adding a bench (for shoes to go beside/under) & coat hooks mounted on the wall or a coat rack.
It's obvious to me from your post that you are proud of your dining room and wish it to be the first thing that you and your guests see when you walk in the door. I do not think you would be happy with a half-closet and I think it would be an awkward solution. If the place were mine, I would demolish the closet. If you want to hang up coats and wraps, purchase a pretty armoire and set it flat against the wall or, perhaps a coat stand for guests coats and your coat could be hung in a bedroom closet...
I'm with Liz30 and would rotate it 90 degrees so it's flush with the wall. You'd be extending the wall unit you have in your dining room but closing it up with doors. A wall length wardrobe like they do in Europe.
If it is only the look of it that bothers you but you are otherwise fine with keeping that closet, I would suggest to paint a kind of fresco over the doors, but also over the wall surrounding it. It might be easier to wallpaper it or glue fabric over it.
A bold, large print (I can see a funky retro print from the sixties) would look nice, and by putting it all over that section of wall rather than just on the doors, you would literally make that closet disappear. I would however remove the knobs and punch holes to use as knobs to make the whole wall totally flat. It would look more or less like an accent wall.
Otherwise, you could just remove the doors and put a desk or dresser in there, with a picture on the back wall. You could keep it as a closet but an open one, put some wallpaper in it, a bench with a cushion over it, shoes underneath and hang your coats on pegs over it all, or instead of hanging your coats, hang a mirror. You could turn it into a landing strip.
Or, you could simply remove the door and put up shelving with some books and decorative stuff.
If the very presence of the closet bothers you, you could remove it entirely, or remove everything but the back wall, making your entrance that much roomier.
No matter the option you use, I think you can't go wrong using a mirror in one way or another. It could make the space feel a bit like it has a window.
If you own the Condo, then remove it.
If you rent the Condo, disguising it would be easier.
simple thing. put the mirrors on the closet doors
or you can remove it, and put on the same place low cabinet for the shoes with some bench for putting on shoes
Wow, there are so many fabulous ideas here! Thanks everyone for chiming in. I think the closet will eventually be removed. But I hadn't considered the privacy issue that @Mary B C raised. For now, I think I'll go with a combination of painting and mirrors to hide the doors. Considering that I plan to have a gallery wall on the adjacent wall, I can live with mirrored doors to reflect the gallery wall. I hope to update once I have the finished product.
Thanks so much!
