Decorative circular mirrors can make a real statement, but often come with a price to match. However, there are a number of DIY projects out there that can be done on a very small budget using unexpected objects. Ever thought of using plastic spoons?
Over at Addicted 2 Decorating, there is a great step-by-step tutorial that shows how to create a very textural chrysanthemum mirror out of plastic spoons, MDF, glue and spray paint.
In this project, blogger Kristi chose to create an ombre effect on her piece, but there are so many options you could go with. I think it could look great in gold, silver, black, or even with a minimal striped option.
For the complete tutorial, check out Kristi's blog at Addicted to Decorating.

Super cool!
This is really an eye-catching project. I like the ombre effect very much.
Wow! Plastic spoons? Never would've thought of that in my wildest dreams, but looks great!
Looks great. I'd be tempted to try it w/metal spoons (from the thrift shop) but that might make it quite heavy and I'd need to use some type of saw to cut off the spoon handles. And that's a LOT of spoons... actually the plastic looks quite nice! '-)
Cool, and not costly at all! There's packs of 100 at the dollar store.
Wow, love the color and the effect. I too would have never thought of this. Great job and very pretty.
That looks amazing. I love that by painting them, they look less like spoons.
Very cool! The quilt on my bed is a chrysanthemum pattern - this would look so awesome as an accent in that room. Thanks! :)
Loving the crap out of this. One hell of a dollar store hack right there.
Looks terrific in the photo, but I wonder how this looks in person.
I like the way the spoon handles are not showing, I've been looking for something to do with a very large round mirror. It's between doing this and something with cardboard roll cutouts. I love the vibrant colors with the spoons though and the reflectiveness.
Now that I think about it this would look insanely good using unpainted metal spoons. Hmm...wonder where I can pick up a few dozen on the cheap...
@SUBWAYKNITTER, me too. There are often projects online that look great in a photo, but I think would look a little cheap or shoddy in person.
I think of it as the Anthropologie effect -- it would look super cool as an in-store display, but I'm not sure about putting it into a home.
I LOVE THIS!
cool!!
Thanks for the feature, AT! And thank you for the nice comments everyone. :) The mirror really does look the same in person as it does in the picture. My neighbor saw it and was very impressed, and when I told her it was made of plastic spoons, she was genuinely shocked. :)
Nifty!! I wonder what the same deal would look like with plastic forks, for a more textured look...
Clever!
@akay lol Anthropologie effect. Every time I look at an anthropologie display i think "I can DIY this. Nahhh, it'll look like crap at home."
But, but, but... What if you flipped the spoons over and used the convex instead of the concave?
Gorgeous!
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing
Just awesome! I've been trying to find ideas to spruce up a square Ikea mirror. This just may be it. Thanks!
This would be great if you had a bunch of those spoons that you get with take out... for some reason my fiance has a stash of them.... if they're similar enough maybe I can use them! LD
I have never been a big fan of the sunburst mirrors, this is a great alternative. Thank you so much!
